Steve your first clip of the owl picking up the mouse and flying through the trees is amazing. There has got to be a place where you can submit it for an award. I don't know how you shoot this stuff hand held. The whole video was fantastic. Thank you for the entertainment.
I always rewatch your GGO videos from time to time. So inspiring! Im still on a 2 year long period without seeing a Great grey owl. But hopefully this summer is THE summer.. Greetings from Sweden. 😃
As always your video and photos are awesome. For me any of those video's and photo's are knocking them out of the park. Can't wait till your next video's. Stay safe!!!!!
Steve, how do you only have 16.9k subscribers? Your teaching us about photography should be worth at minimum 3 million and your photography at least 10 million subs
No home run? What are you talking about? Maybe I am easily satisfied, but those shots are amazing! The light was indeed perfect. And of course the video you captured is superb as well. How do you even find an owl in the wild in the middle of the day? That never happens to me. With each video I watch I love this channel more and more. Thank you for taking us along!
Yes I'm psyched right along with you, the owl videos are always my favorite. What a magical journey indeed Steve, thanks for taking me along and yes it's always educational. I also believe you knocked it out of the park. I hope see a GGO someday out in the wild. thanks again for sharing with us, I just love it.
As always an uplifting video showing the beauty that is in this world. Glad to hear your workshop went well and look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Brilliant video, photography, videography and the teaching. There is a lot to be learnt without words. Have you watched the tracker Jeroen Kloppenburg? His channel is addictive like yours.
Nice video and I think the teaching moment was in the context of when you said something along the lines of, “ just being out here!” Great opportunities can only start with being out in the environment. Great job as always.
Hey Steve! This is a great video, I don't know how you do it.... Having three cameras and vlogging.... I have a tough time with two! That's why you're a PRO! You mentioned shooting the video with the Z7 wow, the focus during the flight video was pretty spot on! I have been using the D850 and D500 the focusing is pretty bad.... At the end of your videos I always end up wanting to get out and have a ton of questions for you ! I'm looking forward to your next adventure! Sayin' hey.... Greg
Love your enthusiasm. It's clear you're in your happy place and your joy is infectious (edit: prob the worst word to use nowadays but hey..lol) Great photos of the ggo too!
Beautiful work. I'd be thrilled to have any of these in my portfolio. I enjoyed just seeing you enjoy getting out. I think just appreciating getting out there may be the most important thing we bring back but your images really help us remember what needs to be treasured and protected. 👽👍👍👍
You put me in the forest with the owl and I thank you for that. Sometimes it's not about the photo but the experience. Keep up the good work, Steve. I know making these videos are time consuming so just wanted to show some appreciation.
Fun outing man. Great Gray's are rare around my neck of the woods. Would love to see them more often. I see Great Horned most often. But I live in Alaska so I can't complain. :D Keep at it man.
Your treks in the Teton and Yellowstone are great. In addition to seeing the the Great Gray up close, I really loved the Aspen Grove at the beginning of the video. Was that on the Idaho side?
Hey Steve, Thanks for the video. I’m here in the Tetons shooting wildlife photography till it starts snowing again I guess, perhaps November 1st? You got me wanting to find a great gray owls so I’m out everyday hiking and looking but I’m happy with whatever comes my way! I hiked off trail along a creek in the Antelope flats area and came upon a Moose Cow and her Calf but no owl that day. I only have a Sony a7iii with a 200-600 Sony G Master lens to shoot with but wish I had a smaller lens lol.... I think I’m gonna start hiking off trail in the Death Canyon area next? Hopefully there’s some Aspens up there! I am yet to find a great gray owl yet. I’m learning as I go!! Thanks again, Gunner...
Loved your forray out into the forest! It was indeed beautiful and of course, so was the owl. Thanks for taking us with you! Beautiful photos, even if they didn't meet your high standards. LOL!
Lost for words, just magic. As always spectacular vlog Steve. Love the images apart from the fourth, I can see what you were aiming for but the sun is just tooooo distracting.
..watch and enjoy your videos and photos..something i always wonder is how you deal with ticks..you gotta be picking up many as you trio about the forest
Nice video Steve. As a wildlife and nature photographer, some days are great just to be out in nature with a camera, some days are great for photography. I wouldn't trade any of them for an office though. By the way, your photos looked good to me. She is beautiful.
Back East, we have so many chiggers and ticks that I would be leery of slugging through the Forrest like that. I hope you don’t have the same conditions... 👍👍👍
Another great video. Do you take any special precautions for ticks? Walking through that brush, I have to think you'd be covered with them and repeatedly have experiences with them. Also, I am just wondering if you have come across any protesters, rioters, or looters in the bush....just kidding.
An area like that would be full of ticks and snakes here in Arkansas. We had to trap a couple great horn owls when I was a kid, they would tear screens off our chicken houses are start killing them.
You mentioned that you had a 70-300 on the Z7 but you don't list it in your gear list. Just wondering which version you are using and how you like it? I have the latest ff p version and find it so much better than the old vr version.
I don't blame you for having high standards if comes to GGO. She is the Queen and deserves all that special treatment. I adore this bird as well, more than any other, and I understand your passion to chase it in the forest. At 11:11 she/he just made me laugh so much:) This is the look I find the most hilarious:) Thank you for sharing with us the Aspen trees beauty and it was a great pleasure to see you out there again.
@@SteveMattheis When you're in those Aspen Forests, just look for the Creeks. If you walk the Creek, you'll run right into the nest. If you go now, you'll still find the babies in the nest. Good luck Steve. OSH :-)

Good to see you using the 500 PF lens, such a great lens for BIF shooting....

Awesome as always! Fantastic cinematography makes me wish I was there! Owls are so tricky to to spot, not sure how you do it!
My Petersons reference guide to North American owls comes this weekend. Can't wait to learn more about the 8 species we have in my state.
Nice! Happy learning!👍
Great footage, Steve. I follow Dan The Ripper on Instagram. He does indeed take some incredible owl photos.

It’s actually pretty rare that I find one, we don’t have nearly the number of them that places farther east do…
Definitely good enough.

what do you look for in order to have a good chance of seeing these owls?
Watching you walk through deep grass like that freaks me out - woodticks not a thing down there?
We have ticks but not at all like back East, I rarely see any.
How do you keep from getting lost as many turn that you make? Do you use a GPS or are you in an area you know well?
I kinda like getting 'lost' out there... And I always have GPS with me just in case I need it...
Steve -
Do you stay on trails? or if you go off trail, do you use a GPS?
Both, on and off trail. I always have gps with me on my phone but rarely need to use it.
Is that the Nikon 70-300mm AF-P FX lens? If so, your lenshood is different than the one on my lens
Yes it is. With a screw-on hood so it won't fall off as I hike...
@@SteveMattheis Ahh, so that's why. Good idea!
I like owls as much as the next guy, but if you could find some goshawk nests in those aspen groves, that would be great. OSH :-)
I'm on the lookout...

Hi Steve I am curious as to what you carry in the forest for protection? Bear Spray?
I know he keeps bear spray for sure, he mentioned it in one of his videos. Not sure if he has anything else though
Bear spray is essential👍
Welcome wildlife photography Rajasthan
Gorgeous being! Not you Steve, the owl, just wanna make it clear.
Haha yep, it's clear 👍
Haha! Well that's not very nice! 🤙

Do you ever get lost?
Sort of. I like losing my way to a certain extent. But there's always GPS to 'save me' if I need it.
