John Davidson interviews Gilbert Gottfried ("What's Next?")

Several years ago, Gilbert‘s wife Dara came to my show and asked me if I would do Gilbert‘s podcast. I said I admire him so much. I think he is fall down funny. A true clown who says things funny instead of just saying funny things. But I said he scares me, his comedy is so harsh it’s like a slap in the face or a punch in the gut. I turned her down. Year and a half later she contacted me again and I said OK. Well, he was just the sweetest guy, and so well prepared and he helped my score. He really seemed to enjoy helping me get laughs. Not every comedian is like that. Instantly we became buddies. I invited him to my show at Birdland, and he and Paul Shaffer came together. And in this past year he’s sent me such amazing things on social media. He’s been a special friend. He taught me the power and the focus that it takes to make things funny. And behind his comedy, of course, is this incredible warmth. The fact that we love him so much makes the whole interplay special. He can’t be gone, he’s not gone. When I think of his face and his voice, the smile on my face is alive. He is with me. He ain’t heavy. I’ll carry him with me forever

It’s strange how Bob Saget, Louie Anderson, Norm McDonald were all talked about and remembered and a pic posted of Them with Gilbert and he was the only one still alive than before u know it he’s dead. A tragic year for comedy that’s for sure lost some greats.
