Bivvy camping is so freeing and freezing!
A bitterly cold night at -8 degrees Celsius on the summit of Hart Crag 822m. A fantastic sunset taken in with a fantastic dog.
    Enjoy the great outdoors

Listen dullard do you actually believe the dog would choose to go out in sub zero winds on his own? Of course not. There’s a difference between a dog being loyal and plucky, and a dog having a wonderful experience. A genuinely caring owner would know the difference, this diva boy doesn’t.

We started last April at 70 & 72! We trained for 4 months, ready to hike up snowdon in July! We can't get enough of it and boy do you need the layers of clothing now lol! The hands can suffer when up high, just by taking your gloves off for a few minutes! So, a liner under thick padded gloves helps that situation! You will love it!

Looks like a great adventure. - 8 C is a good temp for outside winter activity but windchill can make a big difference. I like -10 to - 15 C for XC skiing here in Canada. The wind is not much of a factor in the bush but on an exposed hilltop like yourself, it can be quite dangerous.

I've watched several of these videos, but this is my favourite so far. The sequence from 19 mins in just beautifully expresses the magic of the mountains. I find the videos so inspiring too. I don't like camping in anything below -2C so I won't be doing anything like this soon, but the philosophy of testing and pushing your limits and seeing how you and your gear cope in tough conditions is very inspiring. I've been doing this recently on local hills (I have a lot of hillwalking and navigation experience) but I don't think me or my gear are ready for overnight bivvies in the minuses yet! But I am taking note of that bivvy set-up, maybe for doing the Mullardochs in summer, or even early spring, before the midgies arrive.

    • @BUSHMANandBLUE
      @BUSHMANandBLUE  2 роки тому +2

I’d prefer to battle the cold rather than midges. As long as you have gear to keep you warm enough it’s the same as any other camp really. Just extra care for safety is needed👍👍👍

Found your channel in the last 2 months, loving the content. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents (or pence, after all I'm British lol)...an idea for content that I've not really seen much of is tips that you've learned over years of camping that are slightly unusual, or quirky. Things related to gear, knowledge etc that aren't as common as the other review / tip channels. For example, things like WHY you use the backpack you use not just what's a good backpack etc as not every backpack is suitable for everyone.
What I'm trying to say is attempt to give people knowledge to find their own best gear with knowledge as opposed to "this is the best equipment because...." we all know there is no one best piece of gear for everyone.
I hope this makes sense! I decided to comment this on your channel specifically as you come across as incredibly knowledgeable and would be able to address this sort of content through experience. Obviously don't stop doing what you're doing, just maybe try adding the gear content in a little snippet of a larger video etc. Such as this video you expressed you had concerns with the bivvy and enjoyed the explanation on the Velcro straps, we're there any other concerns we should look out for? What makes a good bivvy etc as I have zero bivvy / tarp experience but you made it look intriguing!
Anyways, sorry for the world's longest comment. Hope it didn't put you off reading it!
Kind regards and thank you for your incredibly entertaining videos. Big love to Blue 👍🏻 thanks!

No mate it’s well appreciated. Yes I’m all about the honesty when it comes to kit and I only promote items that I truly believe in. I’ll definitely do more on the ‘why’ as so many people have no clue where to start and as you say kit is very different and suited to the individual. I’ll never sell myself out like others have where each week they say ‘this is the best tent ever’. Cheers mate👍👍👍

    Tarps are for wimps. 😉
The video was really enjoyable to watch, especially the antics of Blue in the snow. 😂
There's no way I'd have gone up there in those trainers. I always go up the mountains in my old Scarpa Manta (non-Goretex version) boots, all season. I would have put the shoes/boots inside the bivvy bag and the socks inside the sleeping bag to prevent them icing up.
I've had good experiences with The North Face gear, for example my Summit Arctic down jacket that has been fantastic for the past decades of hard use. But that North Face bivvy bag... I'd have dumped it in the car park bin before driving home...together with the tarp. 😉

When I had Bess long ago she was fine down to -8c at least she wasn't frozen in the morning lol
Very funny about your shoes back in the day mine froze solid too. Had to pee in them to thaw out in morning... I quickly learnt to put something over top of them and that stopped them freezing on future frozen walks.

Big fan of your channel, I love wild camping but for a long time I got stuck in a rut of not doing anything or going anywhere………… and it’s because of this channel that I managed to turn my thinking about wild camping into actually going out wild camping again! It has done wonders for my mental health, It’s an amazing feeling being up a mountain somewhere especially in adverse weather conditions with a coffee in my hand and looking around and there’s nothing but mountains around you! That’s what I call living.
If I’m camping in freezing temperatures I put my trainers in a dry bag and keep them in my sleeping bag with me to keep them warm, saves cooking them in the morning to defrost!!😂
look forward to more of your videos especially in wet/windy/stormy weather.

Look for stainless steel/tungsten carbide, reinforced eyelets, welded chains, check reviews against each other...I'm on year three with my kahtoola microspikes, hardly worn down spikes which has included miles and miles on normal asphalt pavements with sketchy ice patches. Have just ordered some nano ones for trail runs, now I've started running again.

re gloves: I always carry a pair of properly sized "work gloves" the kind with leather palms and some sort of stretchy backs. They keep the frost off just long enough to do most "finicky work" then I can put on my proper warm gloves or mits. I sleep in them too as one hand or the other always seems to find it's way out of my bag.

Another great video. There aren’t many peaks I didn’t do in the Lakes but this was one. Should have done it, looks great. A couple of questions- I got some Sealskin socks for Xmas to go inside my sailing boots. I haven’t tried them yet but wondered how waterproof they were and how warm? Also, I wondered if you went elsewhere. I’ve seen you do the Lakes, North Yorkshire, and Scotland. These are all great and there’s plenty to do there but have you tried Snowdonia, Derbyshire, and overseas? Also, you’ve triggered me into action so off to Derbyshire in a couple of weeks to do some off-road cycling. Looking forward to the next one.

Hi mate your comment was ‘held for review’. So yes the socks are amazingly waterproof. You’ll be surprised. Hello Mate , Loved Your video .
I live in Canada and have done some winter camping , so I've got a couple of tips for You .
#1-You must not over heat Yourself , because when that happens , You begin to sweat, that sweat begins to freeze and You get even colder, I believe this is why You got a chill .
#2 -I learned some time ago how to keep my shoes from freezing .When You take them off at night , put them in the bottom of Your sleeping bag ,it stops them from freezing and Your feet air out . it's a bit awkward untill You fall asleep but it's not to bad , and well worth it .and they are easy to find in the morning .
Blue is a BEAUTIFUL dog, such eyes , like a Husky , crystal blue eyes, must be why You named him Blue
I have 2 dogs of my own ( Yorkies ) couldnt live without them .
Ok Mate , catch You later .

I spy an Exos 38 😍. That's my main bag when going camping and it fits everything perfectly. My only gripe is WHO DECIDED TO DO THE 'ZERO POCKETS' CHALLENGE??? Like seriously, there's a catastrophic lack of pockets to help with organising your gear, especially if you remove the top cap. Waist belt pocket? Nope. Bottom Pocket? Nope. Small Internal Pocket? Nope. I don't need more space, just a bit more separation.... or maybe I need a new mentality 😁. I usually take a small bum-bag/waist pack to compensate.
That whole message sat at the summit, all of it, it was beautiful. Thanks for that.
"A true bivvi camp" - oh my god that slayed me as a reaction to your tarp ripping. 😂 I bet you smiled when you opened your eyes in the morning and you can just see outside. Love it.

It definitely needs belt pockets. Good bag overall though. Cheers mate and I’m glad you understand what it’s all about👍👍👍
