Hey thanks for your willingness to help. I heard a lot about having a strong structure for your dog. Can you make a video about a good structure for them. Like morning routine, I life I Chicago and our winters are very cold and wet. So it not practical nor save to go out for a walk specially I the early morning, like my dog wants to go out at 4:30 -5 :00 in the morning. How can I teach my dog that some days we cant go out and that a good time for a walk of after 10am jaja
Yes time in me like up and down training my Belgian Malinois i did when i have him few weeks as puppy but things went wrong when. I get depress & stress now his big 2 yrs old find hard to under control if we go out for walk i developed fear 'cause his strong big dog 4x i fall flat on the ground but his good just looking at me never walk away ..still my only his strong and I'm not getting or giving up for...how can i reach that walking with my dog smooth lightly without leash...if i can reach that i will..yes i know to do ofen as i can develop it but my fear...i must work on it first .... slowly... fear his strong...not to fall ...
I understand why you use your beautifully trained dogs, but it would be so helpful for you to use an actual non-trained puppy so we can see exactly how to get to the point where they will respond to the command.
Hi there, Valerie! Here’s another “stay” training video with a dog who has never even heard the word;) Here’s a link: A 5 Minute Training Plan For Teaching Your Dog To STAY! ua-cam.com/video/2EGY6fNHESc/v-deo.html Thanks for watching ~Ken
This McCann Dog Training is great! I have a 13-week old puppy and it's really helped. I've always been a 6' leash, no treats and choke chain guy. Since finding McCann I'm using food rewards with great success. I love all the videos and watch them religiously. Thanks McCann Dog Training!
The "ding" in the video sounds just like our potty bell. Our puppy uses it when he wants to go outside even to play. He came in from playing outside (door is open) and had just come to do his twenty-minute check on me and was getting a reward for remembering to come during playtime when the video played the bell effect. He got real excited, his head whipped to the door and he ran to the door to ring the bell too and ran back outside.
Al of these training tips are obvious I suppose, but only obvious when they've first been pointed out by a good trainer like yourself. So thanks so much for this. You've taken great care to not only teach the commands but to explain the logic behind it from the perspective of both dog and owner. I've just recently rescued an abused and very nervous older street dog from another country (Spain), so I'm guessing I've got some added obstacles to cross such as language and age as well as her level of trust in us. Any advice regarding this would really help. Greetings from Scotland. 👍
My puppy learned sit and shake a paw in like 15min. But took 3 weeks to really get her to understand lying down and now she ONLY lies down no matter what command we say. Also, she only listens when she can actually see the treat in our hand. Trying to teach her to stay today definitely didn't work out LOL wish me luck.
Somewhere within McCann's videos, they mentioned marking the correct action with "YES!" then rewarding. It helps bridge the gap between action and reward, and it allows for substitute rewards (play or pets instead of treats or kibble).
Thanks so so McCann Dogs for all the wonderful instructive videos - i’ve had dogs all my life and have just adopted a black lab female - it’s been a long time since I’ve had a puppy and your videos have been of immense value in helping me bond with and manage the puppy - particularly things like the house lead and the longer lead outside and your infinite patience has been an inspiration- Thank you so much again and wishing you all the best - Toby from Sydney Australia
Helpful! Wondering though, I have read that once they are doing what you say, you should just say “good” (or whatever) instead of saying “good sit” or “good stay” because they’re already doing it - so it’s kind of confusing for them. Just like when you say “no bark” they don’t understand that no applies to the barking they just here “bark”. That was all very helpful to me.
Another great video. I love your channel and I really appreciate the way you guys take the time to reply to people questions. You're going to be a huge help to me and my new puppy. Thank You.
Thanks, TwoBuck Chuck! I wish I had access to these kinds of videos before I became a dog trainer, that's what helps me choose what to publish on the channel. Kayl grew up in a dog training household, so from the beginning she knew what information was good for her puppies. I had to learn it all through my apprenticeship period and learning as a student. I hope that these videos help you to have a well behaved four-legged family member more quickly! Happy Training! ~Ken

My dog will stay forever when we aren’t on an obstacle course. On the obstacle course he gets so excited he starts before I can get out in front of him. Any suggestions?
When training to stay, if the dog moves and doesn't stay, what do you do? Return them to the position and try again without a reward? give them a negative verbal command? Haven't found this part in any videos yet... I'll keep looking.
It was in another video that you just place them back into position and return to not going such a great distance. Go back to basics (or closer distances) where you KNOW they will be successful 🤗
Hi. So I have an almost 2 year old golden doodle. He is very very food driven. I am trying to train him to stay. So I have a question. If I tell him break while I’m standing however far away from him and he comes is that a mistake?
Hi there, Chloe! It's all about your expectations! We will always have 2 stationary commands for our dogs. It makes it more clear to them, and they will ultimately learn the skills faster that way. I actually have a playlist that you can watch to see the specific differences between the Stay (which has no remote release), and the Wait (which is a more versatile skill and includes a remote release). Here is a link to that playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL7BBgLulherkIfXmn0ZxXt9p5ZNBHSWwm.html Happy Training! ~Ken
4.5 month king charles cavalier puppy. We have stay pretty solid inside. Duration 2+mins, stay at distance/out of sight (e.g. I can leave the room and walk upstairs and return) and distractions (toys). However sometimes he will fail maybe 1 in 10-20 times as I've pushed things too far time outside of room or toys getting to close. What's the best way to correct the behaviour. I currently calmly take him back to the original position and reset - rewarding a look at me, then a down before issuing the stay command again. Is this the right thing to do or not? Should I end the training of stay at this point and try again the next day Stay outside in the park is significantly harder at the moment. Again best way to correct a fail if it happens outside. Only at 1-2 meter distance for less than 10 secs at the moment but again sometimes he fails maybe 1 in 10 times. What's the best approach? If I reduce distance and time he'll get it but occasional fails are part of progressing.
It sounds like you're on the right track, Meet Gravy! It's really important that if you aren't getting a reliable stay that you can see your CKC puppy. The moment he gets up you can mark that moment with your voice, which will buy you the time to get back to him to replace him in position. You don't need to reward when you bring him back though. You don't want to increase the value of you returning back to him to replace him. When you put him back, just praise him, ask him to stay, then do a less difficult stay that's short in duration. That way you'll remind him that he gets rewarded for a little work, and he will be likely to be successful since it's a less difficult stay. Then you can start to increase the challenge again! Keep me posted on all of your hard work! Happy Training! ~Ken
@@McCannDogs Thanks so much for your reply. I'l try and post some video to show how solid stay is indoor vs. outdoors. Outdoors he will sit, down but quite often when I then ask Stay he immediately jumps up at me. I wondered if he's mistaking 'stay' for 'okay' which I've used as my break word? Thing is he doesn't do this indoors or outside in the home garden so I think it's more that he's just so stimulated by the park and just wants to play and not sit still. I realise it takes time so I'll keep going.
You may have to take a step back in your stay training in a stimulating environment, that is pretty common. You can also proof your "okay" by only allowing your dog to be free in a very specific situation. I talk about this in one of our recent videos that you should check out: ua-cam.com/video/HSDyNDcVAGY/v-deo.html Happy Training! ~Ken
i taught my dogs kinda to come when i say their name and come so i got my dog to and STAY then when i called he came and i was far but every since he wont do it aging if anything his worse 😅🙄😔😢
I 've teached my dog to stay in the house and in the park, but when I want to go inside a shop even if she can see me, she barks hysterically and this is very annoying for everybody. How can I teach her to stay calmly and wait for me?
Hi there, Tana! It sounds like she’s feeling a little anxious when she can see you and she’s in a public space. At home, and in the park, be sure to practice longer duration stays. Try to have her stay without any interaction from you. Sometimes those “silent stays” are the hardest! I also want you to try the training from this video we published a while ago. Helping her to have a little more emotional control will help her to be quiet in those settings. This video will teach her to be quiet on command. Hope this helps! How To Teach Your Dog To Be Quiet By Barking On Command! ua-cam.com/video/_EdCPhfdeNs/v-deo.html
My do is up to half hour now after lots of training she is aloud to sit or lay and switch positions but she does it with me right next to her because i am hoping to get her certified
Hi there, greenspectrum! To help your dog to be successful, avoid tempting them out of their sit until you have “released” them. This will allow you to get back to them to reward them in the exact same position as you left them in. This kind of clear information will allow your dog to understand your expectations more quickly! Happy Training ~Ken
This is terrible as far as I'm concerned!!! Tell your dog to stay! go outside walk a near quarter acre ( in a enclosed large full acre so distance sight isn't the Issue that troubles them! But keep it enclosed so they don't have a chance to espcape by accident! then call them! Best use is to treat it as a game of hide and go seek the reward isn't food but your dog finding you and being obedient ( gotta show them you'll always be back so not as much anxiety and they get to find you and relive that themselves! This allows you to help relieve your dog from seperation anxiety! He /she will know she/he will find you if you call or they wait till they are called!! Being separated and out of sight( in a large enclosed area will give them a distance and trust they won't panic run! And doing this let's them know this is the space they will find you! Last of it is give your dog a usual routine and safe space like a kennel or bed if they get to frustrated your not around they go to that and wait!!
Good point, Joseph! We use a less formal stationary skill for that situation. If you'd like to teach that to your dog you can check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/c--37qrAG2A/v-deo.html Happy Training! ~Ken

Is this the max size of a labrador?
why would you give the command stay after you have given the dog a sit command?? Sit is Sit
The easiest command is the "sit" command, IMHO.
