Thanks again for your reaction, I always appreciate it. The singer is also the Lead Guitarist, Buck Dharma. However, Blue Oyster Cult really doesn't have a lead vocalist in the usual sense, as every member has sung lead at different times. In fact, it is their Rhythm Guitarist, Eric Bloom who sings most of the songs and you have not even heard him yet. Anyway, I am glad you enjoy them. They are one of my favorites.
I’m thankful for the person who requested this because I love this song and I was hoping I’d see you react to it some day. It was an excellent reaction. A general belief about this song is that the character they are singing about is a vampire. I don’t know if the mythology about vampires is the same in your part of the world as it is here in the west, but if it’s not then I’ll explain a a couple quick things in this song that make some people suspect it’s about a vampire. Besides the obvious theme of loving the night time, there’s stuff like what happens in the first verse where he sees her and feels this calming feeling and is too mesmerized to look away, a common trait fictional vampires have is that that’s how they approach you and draw you in. An even more common trait is that a vampire can’t enter a person’s home unless the person invites them inside. The line “there’s so much that I can show and give if you will welcome me tonight” kind of alludes to that. And in the second verse he says “no mortal was meant to know such wonder, one look in the mirror told me so”, which is based on another common vampire trait that vampires don’t have reflections in mirrors. Also the simple fact that vampires are not considered mortals. I personally don’t know if it’s about vampires or not. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. This is just a common theory many people have about this song. If it’s not about a vampire, it’s still easy to see how someone might think it is.
That woman was a beautiful vampire, since they are immortal and cannot be reflected in rhe mirror - "No mortal was meant to know such wonder; One loik in the mirror told me so".
The melody conveys the perfect feeling of euphoria the young man was experiencing under the hypnotic trance of the Vampiress. I believe the mythology states it takes 3 separate attacks for her to convert him into an underling vampire under her rule. The man remains under her hypnotic control during this process. Hence the reason why he is going back to see her again.
I always thought it was about Yuki-Onna , Japanese folklore . Snow lady : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuki-onna But it amounts to the same in the end; a beautiful spirit lady feeding of grief and desire .
Blue Oyster Cult display ambiguity and dark romanticism in a number of their songs. They've written a few about vampires and this one seems to allude to the same subject. The woman in white was bathed in light and entrances him. "No mortal was meant to know such wonder. One look in the mirror told me so" - an allusion to vampires casting no reflection, perhaps? I may be misinterpreting this but BOC frequently display dark lyrical themes and the ambiguity is part of their appeal for me. Beautiful, underrated song whatever the true meaning. Addendum: Just discovered this explanation of some of the lyrics: "A close listen reveals that this song is about a man who is bitten by a female vampire and turned into one: "Her kiss that night told me it was over" (his life) "One look in the mirror told me so" (he couldn't see his reflection, a sure sign that he's a vampire)".
I always thought the band made the perfect choice to sequence this atmospheric track just before the closing song on Spectres, Nosferatu. And now it makes even more perfect sense!
Well. Us old school BOC fans know that it is about vampires and, yes not accident they followed it by Nosferatu but I have been listening to Spectres for 30 years and as I have grown older, I can really appreciate their genuine reaction to the romanticism in the song and, now I love it for the same reason I loved it when I first heard it and didn't know what it was about. Because, I (still) love the night. It's possibly THE reason Spectres is my favorite album. Although, I say that about every song on Spectres. LOL!
This song is about Dracula...and thank for sharing your history concerning music. Its beautiful watching how your wife is really seeing the quality of this style. I love everyone from Ravi Shankar to Dr. Dre...there is a sense of spirituality about your auras that keeps me coming back. Happy Thanksgiving
I moved away from Seattle about 14 years ago. I can remember a radio station playing this song every night at like....1 am or something. Can anyone help out on this? Big fan of BOC. My meter for excellent rock songs since 1980.
@@bugvswindshield I know where that is. Cool. They tried to get me to get into skiing. But all I could see was me getting to the bottom of the slope and everyone seeing the sparks as I shot across the I-90 freeway.
I so love you two and your reactions and I am so happy to see you reacting to another Blue Oyster Cult song!. This one from Spectres. My favorite album by Blue Oyster Cult.
I have always wanted to hear more Blue Oyster Cult but didn't get around to it till now. Thanks for reacting to it. A song I know you both will really like is Exiled by Judas Priest, it's quite different from what you have heard from them so far.
Come on it's right in the lyrics. Lady or girl is an old slang term for cocaine, it's white and done off of a mirror much of the time to stay awake and enjoy the night.
This song is so underrated! Amazing!
There is a second verse to this song. Check carefully on youtube to find it. The AOR guys at Columbia messed up, it should have been on radio.
What a beautiful song. Have fun exploring BOC. So much great material.
Fantastic song by a fantastic band saw them live in Cardiff in mid 1970s and been hooked ever since

I love Blue Oyster Cult. Shooting Shark is another one of their underrated songs.
My favorite song! Glad you liked it!
This beautiful song Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser wrote is about Vampires which makes it even more epic.

Only just come across your stuff. Funny you said the singer has such a distinctive voice, considering two people sang in BOC. Bloom and Buck.
Check out Harvest moon, that's another good one by BOC
