- The Transfagarasan Highway in Romania is considered by some to be one of the best roads in the world and a major tourist attraction:
The road was built in four years from 1970 to 1974 by order of former communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. It was constructed through the Fagaras Mountains, Romania's tallest mountains, using 6,000 tons of dynamite. At least 40 people died during construction, but some estimates say the number was in the hundreds.
The 90 km road connects Transylvania with the south of Romania. It reaches a height of 2,042 meters near Balea Lake, making it the second-highest road in the country. The road is known for its serpentine mountain path with s-shaped turns.
In the first episode of series 14 of the British TV show Top Gear, host Jeremy Clarkson called the Transfagarasan "the best road in the world".
Thank you for appreciating 🙏.
