- On 29 May 1953 Edmund Hillary, climbing with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, became the first human to reach the summit of Everest.

Tenzing is the hero but Sir Edmund was a very fine fellow.... they both deserve credit.
These days "conquering" everest means handing money to the sherpas .
Imagine climbing that mountain without the modern equipment we have today amazing feat
