  • In 2017, a Korean American teenage boy at Albany High School started an Instagram account that targeted Black classmates and others with shocking images and videos.
Oakland-based writer Dashka Slater talks with Fifth & Mission host (and Albany High graduate) Cecilia Lei about how the fallout from the racist memes not only shattered the Bay Area high school but rocked the entire town.
Slater has spent years following the repercussions of the account to understand the forces that contributed to its creation. She chronicles that story in her young adult book, “Accountable: The True Story of a Racist Social Media Account and the Teenagers Whose Lives It Changed”.

That's what happens when we don't teach *all* of our young people the truth about America's past, what's going on right now, and where it's all headed from here. I once knew a guy who thought it was OK to say the n-word to black people because he's not white, even though he's also not black, either. It didn't matter what I said to educate him on this, he just didn't get it, and finally unfriended me over how I didn't agree with his racist attitude. That's fine, I don't need friends who do that, but anyway, it's not only white people who should treat black people well, it's everyone who should. When we don't teach that to our young people, this kind of thing is what we can expect.

Non-white races use that word just as much as black people.
