It's almost unforgivable how this movie doesn't get as much love as other Disney classics. It has a lot of beautiful tender moments and this song feels so touching and nostalgic.

And the animation itself is by Don Bluth. The same animator who went on to make his own films such as
      The Secret Of Nimh ( 1982 )
      An American Tail ( 1986 )
      The Land Before Time ( 1988 )
All Dogs Go To Heaven ( 1989 )
      Thumbelina ( 1994 )
      Anastasia ( 1997 )
      And many more.
      And more.

For me, it's because I had the Disney rescuers album when I was 7 and listen to it constantly for the next 5 years. Even then this song touched something in me that was special. When I listen to it now I am 7 years old again. I just discovered it today after waiting for 38 years to hear it again.

***** Funny, that's the total opposite of what the Nostalgia Critic said, in regards to the sequel being the one that people forgot/overlooked. o.O
Anyhow, my guess is that The Rescuers was one of the (unfortunate) Disney films that came out during the time period after Walt Disney's death, and before the Disney Renaissance. It doesn't have any of the usual animation 'magic' and/or (Broadway) musical numbers that's often associated with this company.
But it's also understandable why the sequel might have more praise/ attention. I mean, it's probably the only animated "Disney Sequel" (not counting Toy Story trilogy) to surpass the original film...which is exactly what a sequel (in my mind at least) is suppose to do.
However, having grown up with both films, I know there's a number of things that can be appreciated about the first 'Rescuers' movie. One of them being this incredibly beautiful song! =^.^=

My parents took me and my brother and sister to this in the theater in 1977. It was our first movie as we were all under age 8. Pure magic. We were taken to the movie as a treat for our good behavior and treasured every moment of this movie. I will never forget Dad chuckling along to the funny parts. Sigh...memories.

I sometimes wonder why the second film didn't get any songs in it and why a third movie was never made. It's a shame because now we're left wondering if Binard and Bianca ever had that wedding

They didn't quit this style because it was bad, but because computer animation saves lots of production time, and it's more friendly to the environment (0 use of paper) Disney officially stopped drawing traditionally on paper after The Princess and The Frog.
Few animation studios today uses this old method of art, and you can find them today in mostly Japan. Yes - the anime industry.
Some high budget movies that are animated in japan are still drawn by hand in combination with computer.

Not to mention pushing their so-called agendas by hiring men with beards and mustaches wearing dresses in their parks.

Don Bluth worked on this movie and when you have that knowledge, it’s not hard to see his influence here and there, especially with the opening New York scenes.

The Rescuers is one of those movie/book sets that are just so different from each other that it doesn't matter to me how different they are. Seriously, they're like a series instead of a single thing.

I saw this movie as a kid back in 1977 in the cinema and was totally in love with it. Together my friend who also loved this movie and even had a record of it, we made countless cassette tapes in which we were retelling the story, made a dia's to accompany them etc. The songs are so beautiful and take you right back to that happy time.

I haven't heard this in years...it takes me back to rainy days with a miniature version of me sitting in front of the TV with my teddy bears and barbies lined up in a row, watching it with my dog when she was a puppy. Oh how I wish I could go back to those days

It's that CGI stuff, and the public's willingness to eat up schlock instead of quality. I'm not downing CGI, it can be used well but often isn't. It's just so cold and plastic...it's unnatural, you know? I dunno...just the fact that hundreds of people got together and hand drew every scene gives it a sense of warmth and humanity. Like it was a labor of love, and not a pulled out of a computer to make money of kids who don't know any better, and parents that don't care.

What's crazy is I used to watch this at my grandma's house when I was about 2. It was my favorite movie and those opening horns and view of new york ARE my childhood. An indescribable nostalgia perhaps the earliest sense of what I can define this word as. It was my first recognition of something beautiful as far back as I can remember. my first recognition of beautiful music, beautiful scenery...beauty filling what, to me at the time, were only two holes in my face that filled with up with light

All kidding aside, this is a nice song to one of my fav movies.

These movies remind me of my childhood at my grandma's house. I watched them when I was only 5 or 6 years old. The animation, the storytelling and music just has a wholesome and tearful impact to me today. Maybe it's a life experience I'm reliving, times when things were easier and could enjoy watching Disney movies as a kid without worrying about the world too much.
