All these fast math examples (not just these but many more videos) all choose examples that work best for the method - in these case all numbers lower than 5.
Other videos use numbers like 103x104, because again, it simplifies the method (adding some digits and multiplying others) or digits under 5 to do the line crossing-counting intersections method or 991x998, because you are going to subtract from 1000 and use the product as part of the sum, etc.
The point is that there are many fast methods and the trick would be to know them ALL and recognize which ones will work best BEFORE using a specific method.

It's easier if you start at the end, in my opinion.
    242 x 32 for example would be _ _ _ 4 > 4x2 + 2x3 = 14 > _ _ 4 4 > 2x2 + 4x3 = 16 > _ 7 4 4 (6 + 1 = 7 from the last multiplication) > 2x3 = 6 > 7 7 4 4 (6 + 1 = 7 from the last multiplication)

At some point it's just easier to do this the old way. I like methods where you can do the problem completely in your head. If you have to write anything down I'd just as quickly multiply the traditional way.
Was a math teacher back in the 70s. Used to teach a few simple mental math tricks. Wish I had some of these!

One thing I like about these "tricks" are that it makes it very interesting and furthers the knowledge of how to manipulate simple numbers. I was somewhat surprised to learn from flying in the cockpit that many calculations are done by simply writing sums on a pad and I never saw the use of any calculators. Ok that's was just my experience.

Multiplying by 2 digits was simple but with 3 digits it gets confusing when you can't erase the lines like he does. So I had to find a method that made sense to me on paper and not erasing a bunch of "Multiple this with this " lines

  • @ESponge2000

    Someone requested 999 * 99
    I prefer the 2-digit system
    Like this
    Step 1
    99*9 = 891
    9 * 9 = 81
891_1 and carry 8 in blank
    99*9 + 9*9 = 972
    + carry that other 8 = 980
    89101 (carry the 8)
    89901 (carry the 9)
    98901
But the trick for 9's. Much easier take 999*100 - 999*1
    99,900 minus 999 =
    99,900 - 1,000 + 1 = 98,901
