Excellent as always Eric! I think if more folks would give the CB a try they might be surprised ! Appreciate the effort you put into keeping the hobby alive and educating folks in the trade!
Thanks Eric, just getting back into radio after 20yrs off and didnt know what kind of power mic to get but one you showed confirmed my purchase! I have no mic gain on my radio so thanks again bud
I have never reallybused a power mic and i was getting everything ready for my new truck and i knew i needed a mic but wasn't sute what to go with, I got a power mic to try and glad i watched this before i hooked it up.
I have always loved the RK56 noise canceling mic. Press the lip guard to your upper lip and talk normally. Online you will find knockoffs however at a truckstop or CB shop you will get the real deal. I've had the same 3 mics for over 20 years and still use them today. Changed one to a 15ft cord but the others are all original and still sound great. The boxes you plug between the radio and mic or sometimes install within the radio itself are commonly referred to as "NoiseToys". I have an 8 button box that is more or less a retro sound cloud that plays the sound that you record or is already recorded within the board. Some can key the radio others require you to key the mic then press the button for it to broadcast the sound it depends on where it is intended to be installed. Some are small enough to even install within a stock mic with a 3mm momentary button or such to make it sound off as it were.
I bought a K40 speech processor mic back in the eighties and it was one of my favorites. I still have it but it no longer works. When you key it, it just squeals. I did find a schematic online years ago and printed it off but haven't tried to repair the unit. I don't think the eight pin processor IC is even available any more. One feature of the mic I really liked was a strong magnet on the back of it, you could stick it to a metal area of the dash(this was the 80s) and not worry about the mic ever falling off. K40 even made a CB with the speech processor circuit built into the radio. I think they sold for about $150.
I like Echo, but I hate roger beep. If you use a slight amount of echo I think it improves the sound of ones voice. It sounds full instead of mono tone like some do, but the trick is to run a small amount of echo not blast it so that your voice keeps going over and over after you say something.
Stock mics are OK, but my go to for the 20 years of my trucking career was hands down was the Turner Road King RK-56. While Astatic is good as well, Turner just had it, hands down. Now this is me, a trucker that retired in 2006, so *ALLOT* has happened since then, LOL! I don't even know if Turner is in business anymore... But hands down, it was the best tool for trucking, because of the noise levels. I'd say trucks nowadays are so quiet, you could get away with using the stock mic. I did get a toy-box mic, and while it was fun for an evening, I went back to my Turner, because at the end of the day, it was the clearest and most dependable mic. While toy-box mics are fun, when you need to be serious, and are in the middle of a critical situation, you don't want the battery pooping out, or the complex circuitry breaking down on you, when the fertilizer is hitting the fan-blade...
I just bought a used Uniden pro510xl. With a Wilson Trucker amplified Microphone. Holds a 9volt battery in it. I had to clean and fix the mic a little. Works good. I got one one them stand up microphones for a while. Just ain't been able to use it. Got to have a certain adapter.
Nice video. I use a 1976 Chrome Eagle same as the Silver Eagle the microphone element sounded tinty so i changed the element out with a SHURE 522 microphone element. Works flawlessly and audio is impeccable sounding. I use it on my Galaxy Saturn Turbo and my President Lincoln 2+ with a mic pin adapter I made. Awesome reports. For my mobile i use the old style cobra stock mic (coffin style) with a President Adams 858 chassis. Awesome reports. Again Nice Video. #12 Watkins Glen, N.Y.🇺🇸
Tune the radio to the Mic. Myself being old school from the 60"s I use the Road King 56 Hard to find the original's today tho. These in the shops now are not what the old ones were in the days. btw ,, A 5/8 wave antenna is the way to go on a vehicle. (Firestick)
I know,,,, but I got really lucky. A lady friend was going out of business and gave me several radio's as well as parts and in one of the boxes were 18 new 56's still in the plastic. I sold a few to close friends of mine and as far as I know their still using them today in their trucks.
I bought a Galaxy 959 a few weeks ago and expected to trash the stock mic. But I get such good audio reports from all my base station freinds that I'm hesitant to throw it out now. Apparently it sounds really loud while also being crystal clean clear audio. I was not expecting that from a stock galaxy mic. I'm stuck between wanting a nicer mic and the " if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy. My preference is to be loud and crystal clear, but apparently the stock mic is delivering it. Tough decision lol
I live in a very rural area about 30 min drive away from town and although I can recieve well, transmitting has been a bit more challenging. I just installed a new antenna and was able to get my first contact on my mobile/base. It's a Galaxy DX959 SSB with the stock mic and flat SWR on 1 and 40. The radio has mic gain and it was on full when I made the contact earlier. Would a power mic help at all since the radio has mic gain built in? I'd like to get out a little farther. Great videos by the way. Has really helped me out a lot.
Those old Realistic mics were hands down, the BEST sounding microphones that were ever on the air. They were highly under rated during their time. I actually run one on my CB to this day, AND on my HF Ham radio rig as well.
Always liked my Road King for my mobile units, the older ones were better than the newer ones. Also have the older Chanelle 23 radios with much hardwired into them
This is just a guess, and maybe our man can tell me whether I am right or not. But I would assume that you don't want a power mic, or a noise cancelling mic if your radio has those features built in, such as "dynamike" and "ANL-NB" on some Cobras. It would seem that adding a redundant system might cause problems. Then again, I really don't know. I might be all wet with that. Just throwing it out there for consideration.
i am trying to wire a uniden mic to a 23 channel royce cb and i cant get it to pick up my voice, but i did get it to key. I tried several different wiring setups and none of them worked.
Not a bad video. Now if you want to really do a great video on mics do one where you actually test each mic on the air recording the over the air quality if each mic. Also show more current mics like Astatic 636L, Astatic Road Devil, Ranger SRA 198 the best noise canceling mic made. today. 73's
You have your radio station set up in a garage or workshop? Do you stand up to use your radio? I have a combination base station with HF/VHF/UHF ham, including a straight code key and a code reader, AM/SSB CB, and several scanners, a high amp power supply to run my newer ham HF/VHF/UHF radios, an autotuner for the HF ham radio, and a number of meters, watt meters, SWR meters, and an amplified speaker. I also have a vintage D104 desk mike, but I found it awkward to use, so I use handheld mics for all my radios. I have all this set up on a desk in my bedroom I got specifically for the purpose, with some shelves mounted on the wall for stuff I don't use very often. Yes I have some money into this setup, but I built it over 3 decades, I didn't just run out and spend $3000-$4000 all at once. Along with what's inside, I also have a bunch of antennas. One for HF, which covers the entire HF band when used with an auto tuner, one for CB, one for VHF/UHF ham, and one for scanners. And yes, that means a lot of cables. All these cables, combined with all the cords for all my equipment makes quite a bowl of spaghetti. As for microphones, my favorite handheld mic for both base station and mobile use is the Astatic RD104-E amplified microphone. Yes, its expensive at around $40 new, and you can rarely find used ones, because they work so well people never give them up. They will last for decades.
Semi driver but I also run a noise canceling mic with 5 foot of aluminum case around chord hooked to my uniden bear cat 980 ssb and that thing flat reaches out there

I have a cobra 19 ultra. The cb is not tunable. some of my buddies complain that I sound blurry when only a mile away. The mics that come with these units are not the best. Maybe I need a new microphone or a better antenna? Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

No, the power mic is fine, you may just have to turn down the mic gain a bit on the radio to get the best sound. Trial and error until you get it set just right and then leave it alone.
I've been getting interference from the actual mic. When I move it to different places in the cabin of my truck there is an Audible Change in the Static. P.S. > There is a LOT of static.

That same mic came in the mail today. It wasn't bad for a cheap mic. I replaced three of the electrolytic capacitors inside it with tantalum capacitors and wow, what an improvement. It sounds like the 757's brother. Without those new caps it was just ok, with them, it is clean, clear, and full sounding with bass and treble. Experiment with it!

In Europe, microphones are much more expensive and salaries are lower, CB is enjoyed by relatively wealthy people, drivers. Manual workers in Poland only have smartphones. There were good radio stations in the USA, good old potentiometers, good durability, good speakers. Now mic cables are of poor quality, often without shielding, the speakers are quieter and less dynamic. The USA had great base microphones Turner, Astatic etc. In Europe for many years there were very stringent emission standards, modulation was very poor often 30%, everything was done to ensure that CB equipment had the lowest possible range in relation to the professional bands. Initially, in Europe there was a limit of 0.5W of output power, so in practice it was even a little less not to be exceeded by accident.
There are many D104's out there that take a battery and they are considered to be some of the best mics ever made. I have a generic "workman" power mic that offers an optional roger beep and I love it. It sounds great!
the right cb microphone IT IS ONLY THE MICRIPHONE TOY GIVE TH E COMANY TO BUY THE CB RADIO. THE PREAMPLIFIER MICROPHONE COSED INTERMODULATION. HE HAVE DISADVADANGE. ONE CHANNEL DOWN OR CHANNEL UP CHANNEL COSED SPLATTER.

Yes. I've seen people use the D104 Mic for songs.
If you have a mic gain built into the radio is there any benefit of having a power bike installed on it? Or will it be too much audio and distort.
It depends. You don't want to max one or both of them out, but if you get the two tuned right it's still better than one or the other.
