Rest in peace Harry Dean Stanton (1926-2017)
From Partly Fiction (2012)
Lynch and Stanton collaborated on seven projects:The Cowboy and the Frenchman (1988), Wild at heart (1990), Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me (1992), Hotel Room (1993), The Straight Story (1999), Inland Empire (2006) & Twin Peaks Season 3 aka Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)
'How do you want to be remembered?' 'Doesn't matter'. That's just beautiful.
Well, it's the truth - but it doesn't mean you have to be unhappy. I first heard a cancer stricken Frank Zappa flatly say (when asked how he'd like to be remembered) "it's not important to be remembered". This was a revelation to me in a world where people are so worried about their posthumous legacy. It's not like you'll be floating around in some ghostly form to enjoy it.
UnyieldingDefiance Not necessarily nihilistic. Obviously things were important to him. Music obviously. I took it to mean he didn't spend a lot of time thinking about himself or his legacy. I was impressed, or found it slightly refreshing though maybe hes too extreme.
unyieldingDefiance. You are so right about that. Life is utterly pointless unless you do right by others. Love is the only thing that matters in this world.
It was beatiful, he is beatiful.
Its stupid
"Harry, am gonna tell you". So David Lynch is the real Cooper.
I was thinking the exact same thing I think lynch put a little of himself in cooper.
I think I read once that Mark Frost said many of Lynch's mannerisms were written into Agent Cooper
@@JohnGhost 0:08 Like that thing with coffee?
@@AABB-zb6dv damn fine cup of coffee
Леша Маслаков “...and HOT!”
You listen to Lynch's voice and look at his face and the love he has for Harry Dean Stanton just radiates.
I miss you Harry it still sucks he didn't get the respect he deserved but we movie fans loved him and respected him
He has the respect that matters. :)
Yep he sure does
He was in so many movies. I first saw him in cool hand Luke.
Well said Sean
In life you either get respect as width or length. A fixed amount with a mixture of both but one sacrificed for the other and you don't get to choose anything about it. Harry got length, not width, and that's why the respect he gets will be but from a few lasting many decades even after his death.
I love that little back-and-forth moment they have when Lynch misquotes Stanton's poem. You can tell these guys were really friends, not just two celebrities acting like they were friends.
That's not Harry's poem. It was something written in Japanese a long time ago, even before Harry's time.
it's a famous haiku
@@dbag3345 what's Waifu ?
Truly great actor. Loved him in 'Paris, Texas'
I've always loved him in anything especially Alien and Repo Man. I finally saw Paris, Texas earlier this year and was just blown away by it. Paris, Texas and Lucky both resonate so deeply with me.
I love how lighthearted this conversation was, and then Harry Dean Stanton drops the fact that he might have an illegitimate child, and immediately after there's a close up shot of David Lynch's shocked face.
lmao
That song he sings in the film "Lucky" still haunts my days with the perplexities of love.
I like to think that David always carries in his pocket a small piece of paper that keeps track of his collaborations with Harry
If you haven't seen Harry Dean Stanton in Paris, Texas then you now what you must do...
1:00 when Harry got into character and said the line and Lynch was blown away and said: "there you go!" .... jesus, that was so awesome!
This was extremely nourishing for the soul
Lynch always seems a real attentive and supportive friend, colleague and director.
What an amazing treat to find this. Not for everyone, this clip. But will be special to a select few. There's a scene in Wild at Heart where Diane Ladd is speaking to him, in New Orleans, and his eyes well up with tears. Unforgettable. Seeing him and David chuckling and puffing away like chimneys....like a pair of kindred spirits. Bless you Harry
I've such a crush on Lynch, , , splash
HARRY DEAN STANTON = HE WAS REAL ON AND OF CAMERA AND WAS GREAT .
I love you Harry Dean. Miss you like crazy.
Now 7. :)
R.I.P.
jamesaellis they act together in a film called Lucky later this year too.
I could listen to the two talk all day. RIP Harry.
I just saw Lucky. What a great actor and singer :-) RIP
He was never married. That's why he lived for so long. No wonder the smoking had no effect on him.
You clearly need to start smoking
I heard a story from a friend about Risky Business. That young hotshot Tom Cruise was trying to get Rebecca DeMornay into bed offset, but she never gave Cruise the time of day because she had a thing with Harry Dean Stanton then. Quite amusing, if true.
mgtow
"Harry im going to tell ya.." lol Lynch is the man
Y live on planet X I swear to god if you fucking dare try to tie this legendary human into your little sad boy incel shit
Stanton was the real deal. I love everything he ever did.
This man lived..truly and died himself all you can ask for
0:00 - 0:15
And that is where I learnt where the coffee loving aspect of Agent Cooper came from.
What a talented duo.
That last minute of The Straight Story is unforgettable.
He definitely looked better/younger at 90 years old than a lot of seniors do in their 70's, or hell, even 60's !
I could watch this interview for hours. They could have kept talking for 10 hours
My favorite Harry Dean Stanton line is from "Straight Time", when him and Dustin Hoffman are robbing the bank, and he says to one of the hostages, "Are you in love with me? No? Then STOP FUCKING LOOKING AT ME!" 😂😂
RIP Harry Dean Stanton
"Old pond. Frog jumps in. Splash!"
Am I the only one in thinking that this is beautiful and amazing?
Two legends!! How great!!
5:30 it's Dinosaur Jr.!
Lewis Glass It's Joseph Szabo
I love when there are connections between the people and things I love.
Recognised it as well. "Green Mind".
Respect and love :)
Love HD Stanton!!!! infinity and beyound!
2 beautiful souls. RIP Harry.
Harry, i'm gonna tell ya.
That was the best 6 1/2 minutes of my day today
Here Kitty Kitty!
Love this interview..was playing some favorites off of Cisco Pike.. pilgrim 33..and loving her was easier.. and I'd rather be sorry. But Harry Dean Stanton never knew me..but his part in Cisco Pike the o'd scene.. resonated in my own life. I was born a week after Janis o'd oct.4th 1970..and have struggled with addictions till nov.1st 2013..though still an addict.. I never shot dope..or did meth crack or fentalyn.or heroine. I used to pass out from hypodermics..and though my best friend o'd the very night I was getting saved..miles away..I had no idea he relapsed. RIP Lűmmel. Sorry brother. I had no idea . But thank you Mr.Stanton. your od'd on film ..like others in other films persuaded me to leave that last temptation for something not via needle ..or spoon...or shot glass. I dont need much.. this breathe is a gift.any that follow..just more borrowed time...I'm grateful for the simple things again.
2:17 For a second I thought David Lynch grew webbing between his fingers like the Creature From the Black Lagoon
Wonderful. X
"...and I was already thinking along those lines anyway."
an example of what David was talking about in another video about how naturally funny Harry is.
Did they ever release an extended thing of these two? They must have spoken for hours
It's from a documentary called Partly fiction, it follows the life of Harry Dean Stanton in it's most intimate details. It's pretty good, check it out.
RIP.
that is a famous beautiful haiku at the end :D beautiful
They've also done Lucky, HDS only other lead role besides Paris Texas.
You may want to watch One From The Heart again, after seeing this.
Lynch I love you
such a haunting face
At 90 years old look as good you will not hmm...
Legend
Two of the coolest old white men youll ever see
@Captain Brandon Horror Lover I think it matters more than most people presume.
i think they wouldn't be too bad as young black women as well.
I love how Lynch is fucking David Lynch and then he just starts fangirling over a cup of coffee
"nightmares" same
Right!
That haiku is a famous one from Basho
I want to buy white coffee cup David is using
if David Lynch complemented a cup of coffee I handed him I would lose it
The pond haiku:

Cannonball! 💦
Is that a Roland Jazz Chorus amp next to Harry in the corner ? Good choice
Lol definitely
harry, i'm gonna tell ya.
David’s face when he says ‘ancient pond.’
HovercraftHoliday I'm now going to use this meme just to annoy you.
What's all this Mandela effect nonsense anyway. In my timeline it's the Manjula effect.
‘there is no self ...’
Lucky (2017) Deleted scene
5:30 Green Mind!
I live Paris Texas everyday. Im not "ambitious" enough to just abandon the wife, ex wife, of my children. I think of Harry everday because everyday its Paris Texas.
I was wandering, or is it wondering, before I settled down and had kids with her. Later, she lost her mind though maybe she never had it and was just a front from the beginning. A lot of my generation are like that. They believe in a false, perhaps cable TV, construct.
I guess they didn't talk about hair products.
ancient pond :D
He's wearing a wedding ring?!
What's that movie Harry Dean Stanton talks about ? The one in wich Jack Nicholson called him ...
Ride in the Whirlwind (1966), a western written and produced by Nicholson.
Ah, directed by Monte Hellman ! Thanks a lot !
i always thought it was "water sound" not splash
It's probably translated from chinese (chan buddhism tradition), so multiple versions probably exist
@@kamilkopacewicz8414 ...'all pool'
Is his character in TP supposed to be Dale Cooper when he's old?
daysleepnightread interesting thought! I really hope we get to see a season 4, so we can learn the fate of Special Agent Dale Cooper. Already missing that show!
they look kinda alike and he acts like how dale cooper would act when old... so you never know :)
Have you not seen Fire Walk With Me? He's Carl!!
Lynch got more out of him than Maron.
old pond frog jumps in...splash. what does it mean
Basho offers a thumbnail sketch of 'Oneness'. To experience this Qualitative Rapport with The Whole of Life, such Immediacy requires a mindfulness that relinguishes the personal ego-centrism of "frog" that the natural "jump" is 'all pool'. The "splash" is a pure state of mindfulness. The conceptual yeilds to 'simply thus': of peaceful nothingness (absolute samadhi) and experiencing this very moment's vast intra-personal (positive samadhi) 'world at large'.
What kind of cigarettes does he smoke
mikeswet39 American Spirits I believe. Not very good cigarettes, lol.
Had he not smoked he would have lived to be 110
glendale6 Lol, 91 not good enough?
he didnt die to any type of cancer, just naturally. Harry was a tough man
One or more children he didn't have relationships with? That certainly lowers my image of him.

Dreadful!
