With coronavirus, we’ve learned a lot of new words and phrases like social distancing, respiratory droplets, and of course, the now infamous N95, but what about its less known counterpart, the KN95?
Most of the information out there on KN95’s could best be described as a vast gray area. So when it comes to choosing between the N95 and KN95 for COVID-19 protection, how do know which is the best to use?
Hi, I’m Rachel Walla with Ally Safety and in today’s video, we are going to clearly and simply outline the differences between the N95 and kN95, so you can make the best decision for yourself and your workplace.
In the US, the #N95 was developed to be a single use respirator. Some are suited for industrial environments and others for healthcare environments.
The is a #KN95 mask was developed for similar purposes as the N95 and also undergoes similar testing. However, the N95 is the American standard that is certified by NIOSH, the KN95 is the Chinese equivalent to the N95 but has some differences.

Are NIOSH N95's explicitly required to have bands wrap around the back of the head? Seems unnecessary if the fit is tight enough with ear loops.

@@Aaron-zk6jn Nope. There are dozens of different designs for N95 masks. This video is completely wrong in saying the shown masks are what N95 & KN95 mean. These are only standards. Any mask that is N95 has at least that level of protection. It doesn't matter how many straps they use or are positioned. They only have to certified to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles 0.3 microns and larger. The covid virus is smaller at 0.1 microns but N95 are still very effective because the virus is rarely all by itself and instead travels from one person to another in a vapor droppet which is much larger than 0.3 microns. The idea is to reduce the amount of virus entering the lungs. Only a small number of virus can make it through so a low number coming in have little chance of making it all the way, where as millions coming in thru a large droppet has a good chance of infecting a person.

When I did my N95 fit testing at work, I was put through testing such as wearing a hood and being sprayed with an aerosolized solution. With the correctly fitted n95, I was unable to taste the solution or smell anything. With KN95 masks, I can absolutely smell fragrances through them.

Thank you for this video, it really helps clarify the differences between these masks. From a purely practical perspective the KN95 is much easier to use for a number of reasons and the mask with the behind-the-head straps is more constricting and difficult to add/remove. For me, I would rather use the KN95 98% of the time compared to the other one simply because of how it is held in place and, let’s face it, it simply looks better than the other one too.

I can breathe much better in KN95, without hyperventilating, like I do wearing a N95. This tells me there is more airflow wearing the KN95, which I assume makes it less effective than the N95. Wrong. If you're looking for protection against a virus, NO mask, including n/ kn 95 masks, offers you protection, except but heavy respirator masks that painters use. Don't fall for the lies and propaganda, these masks are not protecting you, and that can be easily proven and known when you understand the science behind it. So what you need to be going by is what you can breath the best with, just so you sufficiently follow whatever legal and societal rules that are in place where you live (which is also insanity, but that's another subject).

just wanted to update, you may want to update your vidjay. Most kn95 masks, up to 70% of them have been failing nioshs QA spot checks in the last 6 months, and that hasn't changed as of 2 days ago. KN95 masks are only authorized for emergency use above only surgical masks in extreme circumstances by NIOSH, CDC and FDA when no other options are available. Even at the start of this they are nearly 10% worse than american standard N95(the kn95 standard allows 8% deviation).

If there is good ventilation, the mask is unnecessary. If there is no ventilation and you spend any time in the space, after someone infectious has been there, your chance of inhaling the virus through the mask is excellent, regardless of that someone wearing a mask or not. The longer that someone spent in the space, and the longer you spend in that space, and the quality of ventilation, will determine how exposed you are.
In virology labs, where the virus might be, they wear an inflated suit fed from an umbilical. The N95 designation filters 95% of bacteria. Bacteria is huge, compared to virus.
Since 2020 began there have been some overly optimistic "scientific reports" that claimed masks were effective. Such is propaganda. A harsh look at the available masks shows they let aerosol through and if the aerosol were from an infected person, each drop could contain hundreds of thousands of virus particles. The "masks" that do not let the aerosol through are respirators precisely fitted to a hair free face and tested with an aerosol scent. If you can smell the scent, you have to get a fresh respirator and start over.
