Steam Deck CRASHING in-game? Try these things FIRST!
- Don't RMA straight away..
/ Remember these games are designed for Windows and are being actively translated as you play.
- First step, try running the game with Proton Experimental.
/ Give it a test run for a while, see how it goes.
/ If there's already improvement you might not need to carry on.
- Increase UMA Frame Buffer Size to 4GB
/ The next two steps will need you to go into the BIOS.
/ How do you do it?
/Shut down completely.
/ Hold Power + Volume Up at the same time until you here the first beep and let go.
- Sometimes changing to Battery Mode in the BIOS can help.
/ I don't know why this is, I just saw people on Reddit recommend switching into it.
- Check the install location, maybe the MicroSD card is struggling a bit.
/ Move the game file to the Internal Storage SSD and see if that helps in any way.
- VRAM
/ A lot of newer games chew up your VRAM
/ See if the game is using a lot of it.
/ Reduce graphics settings if they're a bit too high.
- Last resort..
/ Factory Reset
/ Re-Image of SteamOS
- Actual final resort.. if none of this helps, it's time for an RMA.
/ I had a good experience in the end, only took around 2-3 weeks and Valve sent a brand new unit, not had any crashes like before for a good few months now!

UPDATE: These are just tips to try before you look at RMA'ing your Deck, if none of this helps, it's time for an RMA I'm afraid if it definitely isn't just an issue with the game itself. It's worth noting that I now use Windows 11 (via WinDeckOS) since getting my RMA returned to try and isolate hardware/software issues. I tried Windows 11 normally before and that has its own issues but I've overlooked those since my video "Why I ditched Windows on Steam Deck".
I think my crashes were broad causes from SteamOS/Proton compatibility, game updates causing issues with more modern titles as the code is constantly changing - however since giving Windows another shot, I've not had any crashes like I had before on my other unit. It only took around 2-3 weeks and Valve sent a brand new unit, not had any crashes like before for a good few months now since having it returned in the Summer.
I'd like to let SteamOS develop even further and just use WinDeckOS for now and I'll reimage sometime back to it and see if those crashes come back, if they do.. then the culprit is clear and that would mean it is an OS issue.
Thanks, this helped a lot!
Thank you, this solved my NBA 2K24 MyTeam crashing all the time.
I'm on my second Steam Deck. This brand new one sat while I played Tears of The Kingdom. Well long story short downloaded Cyberpunk put in a good 90 hours & out of nowhere all my games crash.
Not just games either, I was on a website & it crashed. Doing a factory reset right now.
If that doesn't work I'll reimagie it. Like I tried on my previous one that had no sound.
Fun time.
My first SD never crashed and my second one sadly reboots itself sometimes while playing games, i don't want RMA again eh
My OLED LE is crashing in every game that's newer than borderlands and even crashed trying to load Disco Elysium as well as downloading updates. I think it's bad RAM.
They say they'll try and fix it, but that's an impossible fix. If not they'll send a new one out.
Better be a new one because there's no way I'm going to deal with this one anymore. 2 months of this...
I don’t believe Valve gave us a NEW RMA deck. It felt like it’s been used. Cuz this is my 3rd RMA deck
Cheers mate uma fixed my issues
Trying to play Cyberpunk and getting constant crashes where I need to hard reset the device.
I went through the games on my device one by one and changing the proton version fixed the issue switched from proton 9 to 7 now my game works
I don’t understand how I can run The Finals without crashing but I load up Lego City Undercover and stuff like that and it crashes
Thanks Danny, you have given me advice via the SD tips tricks hacks and emulation. New subscriber 🙌🏼
Thanks for the sub!
The games that says playable used to be able to play now it's not working
Just buy my steam deck oled & install SW battlefront 2 and it keep crushing when playing multiplayer and i dont know how to fix it..i started to feel regret buying this , kinda feel like want to throw this away 😡
Switch to 4g cache only helps if your deck is running on windows, btw. And for RDR2, which is exception for SteamOS, that fails to change cache size dynamcally
In the majority of cases that’s true though I did see tests in the early days of release where it did help performance in some games like RDR2.
I played spiderman on the steam deck and i turned ray tracing on to see what will happen and now every time i press play it will crash and show the crash screen and idk how to fix it can anyone help me
Today i started to experience freezing and then black screen playing darkest dungeon, witcher, fallout, i tried like 4 games, same thing, after 30 or 10 min just freeze and restart , im scared because i cant use an RMA being from southamerica, hope i can fix it :(
I think updates has screwed the steam deck iv had it since day one and only now iv started having problems with sackboy the game keeps crashing on the final boss in world 4
Recently my older steam deck got broken and i have received an new brand, it's been about 2 months.
---Here's the problem, with the older steam deck games weren't crashing! Some times it was happening on really heavy games like the last of us, but the new steam deck is a catastrophe! For every single game it crashes...
One thing about it is that i install all the time windows 11 on it, everything is the same since the older one, the only thing that has changed is the steam deck itself.
To be honest i hate the steam os and i don't want to install it, it's so incapable.
Would you please tell me what should I do!?
My rimworld keeps crashing because i have too many mods? Do you have a fix for that by any chance?
Perfect video shame UA-cam cut out your timestamps from playback, see that they're in the description but not the video timeline. In any case thanks for your efforts. Tried experiment didn't change my end result. Will gradually try other suggestion like bios settings and have already lowered the games graphics to as low as they go besides keeping the resolution decent at 1280x800 which is as high as codbo3 will go on steamgamemode state.
Think getting most games to work is easy peasy so long as they are older than 2016. The un optimized games however.... What is it about me that I won't be satisfied until exactly 100% if the games I'm presently interested in playing function, instead of just playing those that already do?!?
Thanks for dropping a comment, really appreciate it! It's definitely a case by case basis for a lot of newer games and some of these tips definitely do help in some situations - unfortunately I ended up RMA'ing my Steam Deck and that unit has been working great without much need of workarounds.
If you have a warranty definitely give it a try if your Deck is un-usually unstable when gaming. My crashes stopped for a time then got worse and worse as time went by.
@@DeckTested The thing is for most games Iv run the deck works as well as any gaming laptop Iv used or a low-mid end desktop. Only been crashes of regular sort on two games so far (Squad & Call of Duty Black Ops 3) both of which are poorly optimized. So I'm not convinced RMA'ing would improve the decks performance on those two games to be worthwhile. :-/ a bit of a pickle damned if I do or don't.
I bought an used 512gb model of steam deck from ebay and i keep getting constant crashes , i tried changing memory buffer , re installing amd apu drivers , updating to the katest steam os , using different proton settings and i keep getting crashes , the only thing i havent tried is to factory reset it and re image it i think ill have to return it I dont know what i am doing wrong,
I would try to return it if you have recently purchased it and there are these kinds of issues. The recent price drops on LCD models would be a much better buy with the warranty/support from Valve in case there's ever an issue.
@@DeckTested Thanks I requested a return earlier on today and it was accepted I decided not to buy used again and just went for the 512gb oled direct from valve hopefully it arrives with no issues
Something on a reddit about holding (-) and (...) and then power until kt flashes s bunch then releasing power and it will reboot and reset the gpu. Do this plugged in
Interesting, didn’t know this one. Thanks!
Tried the first step (increased buffer size, entered battery storage mode) and the crashes seem to have gotten worse, lol, games used to crash around 15min - 40mins in and now they are crashing almost inmediately, first 5mins....😪
tbh, i think my (just 4months old) steam deck has that power module/gpu related issue everyone is talking about. What s weird is that Spiderman Remastered is a high demanding game and my SD has never not even once crashed when playing that particular game, doesn´t matter if i put 1 or 8hrs straight, it never crashes when playing spidey. Not gonna lie man, this issue has killed me, starting to regret buying the device 🥲, $400 down and i cant even RMA from my country...💔 its cool i can play very low demanding games and roms with no issues but common, i can do that on almost any $100 or under device....
Brother, what sd are u using? Also, have u tried windows? Mine is one of the first editions and I've got it for at least 2 years now,, the 64gb one with micro sd, i have both, windows and steamos and i haven't had any issues at all, only when emulating x360 on my windows and i figured it was a configuration file issue... if u need help reach out to me, I'm from colombia and i can't afford to rma either lmao
I've had Nioh crash at random intervals and it's on the SSD. It doesn't offer much in the way of tweaking sadly.
My unit ended up going through the RMA process, but these steps are worth trying with games that just are generally a bit unoptimised. I had a month left of warranty and since I got the new unit back, so far so good!
Mine did samw thing, mybe its a game problem
@@jonathanbody3973 I wouldn't be surprised, Koeis titles are a bit iffy with Linux based systems.
Valve shut the value on fun!
I fully appreciate your video but this all wau beyond what ai signed up for when I bought a Steam Deck. If the same game is available on the Switch I always buy the Switch version now. I hate games freezing up midway through and that is something Steam neglected to mention when they were selling this expensive console. I'll take slightly reduced graphics but 100% stability on the Switch over the Steam Deck's frustrating problems.
I'm currently testing you're advices, ill edit if it worked.
Edit : Thank you bro it actually worked, the only thing i had to do is up the ram and actually for my case it was better to remove proton. THX !
Edit: I swear this game this is a scam after like 5 mins its crashed :(
I dropped $600 on one of these because I love the portability, and I wanted to play Dying Light 2. You would think if a game is advertised as "Steam Deck verified," it would work. The game freezes about every hour . I absolutely hate my Steam Deck. Never again, Valve. Lesson learned. I'll stick with my switch, and it's future iterations in the future. I'll take a hit in graphics in exchange for stable , reliable gameplay.
This is more or less the issue I had, eventually it started crashing after 30 minutes, then 10 minutes and it got worse and worse to a point I could not play anything somewhat demanding more than 10 minutes or so. For context it got so bad that Rocket League would crash before a match finished!
I RMA'd my Steam Deck and they sent a brand new one back, that one has been relatively faultless in comparison.
Do you have a suggestion for a better gaming option? The Steamdeck has really soured my appetite for pc gaming . Perhaps I was mistaken. Can I get a stable handheld pc for a grand or less?
Let's play Dying Light 2 on your switch, lol
SAME! Dying Light 2 and No Mans Sky, sending mine back today. Sad to package it up.
Have you had any issues playing your favourite games? Did any of these tips work for you too? Let me know, thanks for watching!
I tried starting Halo Infinite today and it actually worked, but when I wanted to join a game it always crashed :(
Worked for me crash on Disney dreamlight valley on start up think the ram tip fixed it thanks good tips 😊
@@eleanorgreenall9224it worked for me for about a good 20 mins and now it's crashing after every game boot up 😢
The only solution is to RMA the device, everyone is having the same issue and everyone follows the same procedures from the steam support and they don’t work, stop wasting your time and ask for an RMA, or just do them yourself when steam support asks for it
This is exactly what I did in the end and so far it seems to be a better unit, follow up video is coming! But these tips are still useful for some games that just have Proton compatibility issues and can help in some cases.
The Steaming Deck of 💩 . You spend more time trying to get a game to play and cannot find any solid information on UA-cam. Too many variables!
First two mins a waste of time, I think you should have made a shorter video. Anyone coming to watch this is probably already frustrated 😞
Exactly dude just get to the point
it's just swizzle words which wont do anything or get any progress, bore
Yall are fun^

video is not helpful at all you talk through like 90% of it and didn't even show us how to do it what was the point of making this ,gave us 0 information
Thanks for the feedback :)
If you actually listen to what they are saying then the talking would be more useful, how are they supposed to thoroughly explain something by talking less?
Valve is shady steam OS is trash.
I’m giving up with Steam Deck. The game crashes getting worst. This is my 3rd ‘faulty’ RMA deck. And all my games are paid games from Steam. No piracy at all.
Same here but I only have one game that crashes constantly and it’s war thunder, I made an rma back then and got a new deck with same issues as before lol
