      Wow, nice modifications 👍👍👍
      If you don't want to scratch the edge of the rim's outside, is it possible to turn the rim with the outside pointing downwards?
      Then you'll work on the backside of the rim.

    So many modifcations are opposed to the idea behind the Harbor Freight tire changer - simplicity and ease of understanding how it works through grass-roots support.
    I very much like the attempt because it shows self-reliability. Kudos.

      The original HFT version is an affordable to everyman tool. Not knocking this excellent mod, or your comment. But if HFT made it this way to begin with I am afraid it would be hard to keep the price down. ( I paid $35 for mine)They could however build and offer the mod as a separate purchase. More could afford the quality in 2 purchases. And depending on the price I know I would consider the second purchase.

Worked at a service station doing tire work for a few years a while back and the duck bill was quite nice after using the full manual harbor freight setup. The bolts/lugs on the base is a great idea.
    I did the Hunter-foot duckbill mod on my own but I’ve had some struggles with it- mostly due to the wheels moving around over the post, and the damage from the winged centering hold-down fitting is frustrating and totally unacceptable.
    I’m going to weld some 1/2-20’s on there right now!
    The other problem I had was a destroyed a “heavy duty” pallet in 2-1/2 tires for my jeep. That’s a problem - but I don’t have my shop built yet so no concrete to anchor to.
    Thanks for the real world tips without the “look what I did!” attitude of other vids. Complexity and attitude is not required LOL

    I just did 8 285/70R17 dually wheels on mine with a similar home built setup (without all the bearings and washers and stuff) worked good but was a learning curve, learned I need that cone, larger deck/base plate with recess for flat rims, and some clamps. Note to others, if leaving old wheel weights on, start at the weight and you don't have to fight the duck over them, learned that 1/2 way through....

    Awesome example of what can be done with a basic Harbor Freight Tire changer. Thank you for posting this - I have made one, but without roller bearings just plain heavy duty tube that I bored out to a close fit over the existing hold down. There is little play and for the number of tires I will be changing should work fine. Just waiting for the arrival of the duckbill to complete. Thank you again for this awesome example. There is no way I could mount 245/75/R16 10 ply tires with the existing bar only without damaging either the rim or tires so this has solved my problem. Whole mod took about 2 hours with some scrap square tube and round stock. Duck bill from Amazon.

    • @LucidAutowerks
      @LucidAutowerks  6 років тому

      That's awesome, I'm glad to hear you built one! I could never even think of doing anything but dismount tires from steel wheels when I first purchased this tire changer. Mounting tires was pretty much impossible. Now I feel confident enough to mount and dismount tires on wheels that I actually care about!

  • @mikemm03
    @mikemm03 5 років тому +1

    You should consider modifying this kit to work with motorcycle wheels as well. Mounting the fat MC tires is a challenge, even with the Harbor Freight setup. So something similar for MC tires and rims would be awesome.

    Could have saved me over $1,000 if I had seen this video of the modded HF manual tire changer since I DID own one. The welds holding the threaded tube that holds the tire to the plate broke on my first one, then the second one the bead breaker bent beyond repair. The supplied rim holder also gouges aluminum rims badly, so that billet aluminum alignment piece would have been great to have. I could have made a new breaker, but I gave up on it and just bought a full size air powered unit from Eastwood for $,1,500. I'd been better off buying your modification since my needs are only hobby use. I hope more people share this video and your channel. You should patent your upgrade setup and see if Harbor Freight will buy it from you or license you to build them.

    A T-slot made of bar stock screwed below slots n the hat would allow you to make up and use mating T-nuts tapped to any pitch and diameter that floats your boat.
    The T-Slot is essentially a hands-free wrench and an assistant to keep the nut from dropping on the floor and rolling under the bench.
    Once the wheel is bolted down tight to the hat the T-slot will not be taking the bulk of the force of tire removal. The bolt, T-nut, and the hat will.
    You can screw the T-Slot to the bottom of the hat with #8 countersink head machine screws.
    No need to use OEM lug nuts/bolts. Machine 60°and or 90° cones that fit around the bolt(s) that you want to use for retaining the wheels you're servicing.

    The rub is the road force balancing system nowadays mounts or remounts tires and wheels to achieve minimum radial run-out.
    So a tire store you may be able to establish a rapport with is the best and least time and trouble. If you don't do several a month of your own, your need for smoothest operation will outweigh your ability to do it in your own shop with this much ease when finally you've done all this work and purchased all this.

    You have a good skill set. I’m a licensed residential builder in sc formerly of CT. I liked your 45 degree nut, I’m doing that on my give away changer, I used round tube in round tube for my ducks bill foot at first in the middle of the 3” long round tube I changed it up to two 3/8” bolts with hose bib handles to take the flex out of the pipe. Also, I sliced the holding pipe (3”) and removed 1/4” of steel from the holding pipe which closed the tolerances . I squeezed it together in a Vice and welded the outside. Made a big difference.
    I do (restore old Vw’s busses and pickups with wide five wheels and made a plate. I bought the four cones and used the burr to get it to fit right. My drill press is variable speed so at 2,600 rpm, it took a while longer to size. It works on 4 bolt later year VWs.
    Regards, Jim Morris

    • @LucidAutowerks
      @LucidAutowerks  2 роки тому

      Thanks Jim. That trick with the steel cones is great. One of the most time consuming parts of my kit is actually making the aluminum centering cones. I make them all on a manual South Bend lathe from the mid 60s. Takes me a good amount of time to make each one. I changed my design away from the 45 degree nut only because it was really tough on the drills to make that large of a hole and have an interrupted cut. Where's the video of the 18 inch low profile? I have a nomar tire changer for motorcycle tires and i really want to try a low profile car tire on it. it works in a similar fashion only it grips the rim at the bottom like a pneumatic machine and the duckhead is the bar.

    Whoa,,,,u the man. Did you make the bead breaker yourself? holding the tire firm and breaking the bead is always the hardest part. I use tire levers to put and pull. Lube and leverage are the most for actually taking tire off the rim.
    New levers are aluminum so a bit thick steel works fine and more durable. Just gotta be careful with mags.

    How did you flip that tire out like that so easy..?? I got the same HF machine and i got the beads broke and the tire has been separated from the wheel but i can't get that tire to flip over like you did then to swing around 360 to get the tire off ... Its really tight and hard, the tire has NO leeway and will not allow me to flip it over...
    I don't understand how you guys are flipping these tire ends over so easy ..

    • @LucidAutowerks
      @LucidAutowerks  5 років тому

      Is it a low profile tire or does it have a stiff sidewall at all? If the tire fights you, it helps a lot to push down on the tire 180 degrees away from where you are trying to insert the tool. The opposite side of the tire should be able to go into the "drop center" of the wheel, which is the grove in the wheel that's located an inch or 2 below the lip on the front side of the wheel. If you Google "wheel drop center" it may be easier to see pictures rather than try to understand my description of it.

    • @ACommenterOnYouTube
      @ACommenterOnYouTube 5 років тому

      Its not that low of a profile but it does have a stiff sidewall .. here is a picture that i took and you can see that there is little to no space between the tire and the wheel to fit anything to get it up and flip it over the wheel lip...

    • @LucidAutowerks
      @LucidAutowerks  5 років тому

      You Tube it actually looks like the whole wheel is a drop center in the middle. If you can have someone really push down hard on the opposite side it should give you the clearance you need. Are you using the tire changer how it comes from Harbor Freight? The red bar that comes with it would probably damage the finish on those wheels. When I used mine before making the attachment I used a bar from the brand No-mar and it worked pretty well for dismounts. It has a plastic tip so that you don’t damage the wheels, although with a stiff sidewall I found that the plastic bends and isn’t quite strong enough for the leverage you need.

    • @ACommenterOnYouTube
      @ACommenterOnYouTube 5 років тому +1

      Yes i have that mojolever which has the nylon tip... but even with that, there is NO room for that tip to fit between the tire and wheel... from that picture, there is like less than 1/4 inch of space ..
      That picture you saw is the one side, on the opposite end, the tire lip is touching the wheel lip and its pretty tight there because my end is pushed down... This tire is very stiff and i get what you are saying but i don't think its as easy to do it...
      Like 99% of these video's, all the tires used are easily pushed down and they can get the mojolever or the HF red bar in there and flip the tire over with ease and im like WTF..?? Why is my tire so damn stiff and i don't have the room to do what you guys do ....
      In that picture if i were to left that red arm up, the tire sidewall will go back up and touch the wheel lip as if it was never broke ... and i don't have the strength to push that sidewall down to even try and get the mojolever in there .... that sidewall too strong ... I have tried a smaller version of a tire iron to squeeze between the tire and wheel but it will not budge.... if i keep pushing or pulling, im worried i will bend the lip of that wheel ...
      I think i ran out of options here and maybe throw the towel in and send these wheels off to the tire shop to have them remove these with the machine .... Then bring the wheels home and attempt to get the new tires ON with this same machine... Hoping those sidewalls are less stiff to where they allow me to push them into the wheel .. lol

  • @28Deelay

    You need to use some soapy water when using bars (you're creating a lot of friction) or you risk missing up the rubber.

    • @LucidAutowerks
      @LucidAutowerks  6 років тому +1

      Thanks. I used tire lube when mounting the tire but I didn't bother when I was dismounting it. These tires weren't very good although they were worth keeping around to use for rollers. Normally if you're removing a tire you're replacing it with a new one but I understand what you're saying.
