What a beast of a horn this is! Sadly I have decided to sell it, I'm working on a new custom horn with Adams and my policy is one horn in, one horn out. Here's the listing:
www.austincust...
Think about all the fancy modern horns and their claims of innovation. While yes there are some very great ones can you imagine a company taking all the time and effort that this horn took? And to think that 78 years after manufacture it's still a magnificent instrument that holds up well with any horn on the market! This is one from my own personal collection and while I am stuck home I thought I'd share a brief clip of it. You can tell how much I love it!
Don't know about this horn? Never seen it?
Buescher "400" Model 225 / 224
Sold from 1939 until (about) 1956
Some noteable features on this Model
1) Valve block is soldered directly to the leadpipe and bell.
2) Wonderfully engraved bell logo
3) Brass with Nickel Silver Trim
4) Reverse Wrap
5) Bottom caps and Top Caps are internally threaded so they screw INTO the valve block, this is a feature NOT found on many (if any) other trumpet models
6) Flared out bottoms of Valve Tubes (sexiest block ever)
7) Curved water keys
8) Direct air column design (notice all three valve slides on one side of this horn!
225 was considered a "Large" bore (now a ML bore) and the 224 was listed as a "Medium bore".
225 measures 0.455" at 2nd slide
We also have some other great Vintage Buescher trumpets (including a few 225 models) for sale at our shop:

This is the trumpet I used to learn. It was originally my great grandpa's, then it was my grandpa's, then it was my uncle's, and now it's mine.
You’re very fortunate. I’m surely envious.
I've seen Conn trumpets w' that lead tubing into the 3rd piston ! What a beauty in sound and appearance !
42" Buescher ........ highly desirable ! Thank You Trent !
That's amazing! One of the most beautiful trumpet I've seen. True craftsmanship.
Couldn't agree more!
I got back into trumpet playing after 25 years of not playing, with a 1942 Buescher 400 225 True Tone. The only thing I knew at the time that is was the top of the line Buescher model and many of the great jazz players of the day listed it as one of their great horns. Good enough for them was good enough for me!
Nearly 20 years on, I can understand why. So well made and designed. A delight to play and plays just as well as it did new, 81 years on. It has regular use and I will not part with it. I liked it so much that I bought a 1951 Buescher 400 225 True Tone cornet as well. It is just as nice but very small, so a bit tight to hold with the left hand. It has all the same design features of the trumpet including the unique valve block and beautiful hand made bracing.
Defiantly both keepers, the likes of, which won't be ever made again.
Both of my trombones are Benge and King from the early 60s and have that beautiful dark lacquer now. I love the way it looks
I have an olds ambassador with the same thing, very cool!
My trumpet teacher (Robt. Hance) who studied under Frank Simon and Augie Schafer at Univ. Cincinnati Conservatory of Music was given the 0002 serial number of the Buescher cornet from the company to play. I had an opportunity to play it when in high school.
That is the most fascinating and intriguing horn I’ve seen yet. Thanks to you for introducing us to it! Unfortunately I’m to for the sale.
Truly a beautiful sounding trumpet. I may pick up one!
My nefew just started and I gave him a 1952 Buescher cornet. His teacher told him no old instraments. New only for the class. Teacher wasnt prepared for the cornet nefew walked into the class with. It was in very good playing condition.
That is a fabulous sounding horn
have just purchased a 400 looking forward to collecting it next week jan 2024
Hope you enjoy it!
Here's a review from our customer George who just bought this beauty!
"This is the seventh horn I have purchased from ACB, and as always, no disappointments. The Buescher is a sweetheart of a horn. It is unlike any of the other horns in my collection. It's Deco Desgin is amazing and includes a scalloped shaped valve block, welded directly to the lead and bell pipes, tightening the wrap significantly. The reverse lst, 2nd and 3rd valve slides are all on the right side of the valve block, leaving the lead pipe to go directly to the 3rd valve. This really gives the horn an easy blow. Great valve action and the bell garland has a wrap ( similar to my two Selmers ) that offers extra stability to the tone.
Although this horn is 78 years old ( almost as old as my 84 years ) it is in amazing condition. You have to look long and hard to find any marks or wear on the great dark honey-like look that vintage horns get with age. The compression is like something you get in a new horn. The tone...aw, man, it is so warm and sweet for ballads, but you can push it for orchestra work, too.
This is my first Buescher. If you have never owned or played one, you are really missing out. This horn is fun to play, period. I think there are 2 or 3 Bueschers in ACB stock right now, so if you want something different in a horn, buy one of these babies.

I bought a Buescher LP with the same design as described here after watching this and other videos. I bought also the AT Flugel Horn style mouth piece. I'm pretty much a beginner but already in heaven. The build and Deco patterns are beautiful. I'm in love with this instrument and sound. Warm,, huge and easy to play. Spoilt.
Trent you play beautifully you are gifted.
thank you so much - cheer!
the sound on this is amazing.
Bueschers are some of my favorite horns ever. I've had an Aristocrat and currently have a 1952 37B. It's categorically a student model, but it is essentially a 400 without the bells and whistles (just like Olds did with the Ambassador).
The caps are internally threaded and have this really cool in-set design that makes the buttons nearly flush when pressed down.
The valves are bottom sprung and have near perfect plating (something I've noticed on multiple Bueschers). The valve stems even have a score mark around them that tells you where the alignment should be. You line it up to the top of the cap and it will give you a perfect alignment every time.
Tengo trpt.Buescher mod.1942 400-225.Donde puedo conseguir partes de esta. gracias
I just love your show and tell vids. I'm the same with old motorcycles! lovely horn btw, but I don't understand why they have cut the threads for the top caps internally. Can you tell us why? It seems like a change from the norm. just for the sake of it.I also love the quality of some old trumpets. I bought an Olds Super (from you) 10yrs ago and had it restored: the engineering and build quality are unbelievable, for instance there are no less than 16 separate parts making up the 3rd slide (yes sixteen). I can't imagine what that horn would cost to build today, just the labour costs would be astronomical. Keep the videos coming.
Oooo, just noticed the scalloped brace between the tuning slide and third slide.... that's crazy cool!!!
It's such a cool horn!
Wow!!! So smooth and clear sound! Thank You Trent, great demo!!
Thank you kindly!
There's something special about the Buscher trumpets! I have an Aristocrat I got at a flea market for $60. It needs a once over by a technician (new felts/corks, stuck slides, mismatched top button) but it's a fine player for it's age! it really, really pops with a bright 7E-ish mouthpiece, and I really wish I had opportunity to play it with a group!
I thought my Getzen Super Deluxe Copra-Temp from around 1956 was neat, but your trumpet in this video is just packed with interesting features!
Gr8 playin Trent. Enjoying evry minute man
I remember hearing the name Buescher in the 70s and it was not complementary. That horn (and you) sounds great.
Most likely that's due to the fact that Selmer Corp bought the brand name and after really 1950 IMO the quality changed. The early 400's like this one are absolute monster instruments!
Wow!!!! You sound beautiful on this horn. I see why it’s not for sale.
The 400 225 is a fantastic horn! I play it almost every day. The one i´ve got needed a valve job and was not playable at first. Now it´s as tight as a Yamaha. The sound is dark and the slotting is pretty "loose", witch makes playing in tune very easy. There is room for good intonation i every note! I have a lot of vintage horns, and my Buescher is number one before my Olds Mendez.
Agreed!
First note you played on this horn blew me away You didnt mention the soooth coool pinky ring
Excellent trumpet
The Buescher 400 275 Cornet is its twin - and plays great too. Intonation is exceptional. Check it out.
yes those are great cornets (I have 6 of them!).
I owned one ... model 225 ... just like the one you played. Never understood why it was a 400 and had a different model number? Coolest Art Deco design ever = just a stunning design. What valve block can compare in the cool factor with that horn? Thx for featuring yours ... most people have never seen or heard one.
Yeah I don't get that either!
How does it compare with another of your favourite, the martin handcraft imperial? It will be fantastic to see them compared side by side
Now that sounds like a fun video! I'll put it in the queue!
Sweet sounding and looks great too. Dont these horns have a very small bore too?
This one is .455 not much smaller than a modern mL bore
The 224 has a .448 medium bore
Hi Trent, that trumpet is beautiful! I have a Buescher True Tone 205, what's your opinion about it? I think it's kind of rare...
I have never liked those. Just meh.
@@austincustom 205 plays a little brash.Makes a good lead horn. :)
Creamy sonority on the Mt.V 1.5 !
Eric Miyrashira Yamaha also has three reversed slides.
HEH! IF theres sax versions then I guess there has to be the trumpet. :) Wonder if there's a Conn 10m Trumpet...heh...
yes plenty of vintage Conn Trumpets are amazing players!
Hello, what is your primary horn?
Adams Gen 2 A1 Trumpet (which I helped design).
