From Gary Mitchel looking at all of space and in particular of time itself, “the fire in which we burn”, a quote from Dr. Soran in Star Trek Generations (which at the time of the release of this film was being celebrated for it’s thirty year anniversary) about our existence. What Reunification means runs from the start through to Kirk putting his badge (taken by Spock upon visiting his gravesite to have his friends body retrieved and placed into stasis for “Project Phoenix”) back on and crossing over from the Prime Universe to the Kelvin one to visit Spock at his death bed. The goal was Mitchel’s, to cause his friend and former Captain to reunify once again with Spock upon his death. I believe this all happened after upon Kirk dying and saying “Oh my”, he encountered a “near death” experience; Kirk was likely in stasis at the Daystrom station. And so, Spock went to Viridian 3, retrieved Kirk’s body and had him placed into stasis in a project which Spock envisioned: Project Phoenix. This is where the young Starfleet officer and descendent of Ensign Cole who served aboard the original Enterprise along with Mitchell and Kirk comes in. Through the process and likely near to his own passing, Spock likely transferred his Katra to her along with the knowledge to complete the Phoenix Project and revive Kirk-just as Kirk had previously revived Spock at the conclusion of Project Genesis. My favorite is the Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks crossover.
6:38 Someoen should make a cut of each captain saying "What!?" in astonishment. I remember Picard saying it in similar tone, I think in Generations when the Klingon bird of prey decloaks to transport Geordi and Soran before the shockwave hits
