  • Based on phone footage that was not intended for uploading, this is a rough and ready illustration of the Sony TC-280's hybrid idler-and belt drive scheme.
Getting to this point is trivial, as the case and front panels simply unscrew. This is the machine after removing solidified grease from the mechanism, which was preventing proper operation.
The light-coloured rubber band straddling the tape counter is simply holding the auto-shutoff arm in the operating position, and is not part of the recorder.
The rewind function is unusual, in that the rubber belt passing over the large white idler is pushed against the payout reel to provide rewind drive, acting both to transfer motion onto the idler and to transfer motion away from it - I have not seen this approach before.
Kits of two belts (rewind drive and tape-counter drive) are currently available from the USA and Italy via eBay.

Yes, odd arrangement, isn't it. And LH (left-hand) is the supply reel in this case. Thanks for commenting!

I own a TC 540, on other note about LP120, I saw your video about it before getting mine, I like it for it's 78 playback ability and first saw it on vinyleyezz channel, I went into a DJ shop to see one spin in person and thought nothing more of the slight noise, a cheap BN one came up on ebay for AU$300 + $50 post from UK - Australia, I'm still using it and have repaired the AS and removed high filters from preamp board. vinyl rescue has deleted all of his LP120 videos because of stupid comments still coming

My original LP120 was much more noisy than its replacement, as I demonstrate in the video, indicating a faulty unit, but there is still more than I would expect. However, as I only use it for background listening now, I've stopped bothering about it.
One commenter recently mentioned that the latest LP120 version is much quieter, so maybe the problem has been addressed and eradicated.
Some subjects, no matter how objectively stated, seem to trigger unpleasant comments, frequently from people who have never owned the equipment!
It sounds like you have been looking into the LP120's preamp. I forget the details now - it's been a while since I had the deck apart, and there are no schematics available - but I did notice early on that there is some degree of automatic gain control and/or noise gating in line with the USB output, so I just use the direct phono out now (fortunately my amplifier has phono preamp inputs.) I'll leave it to someone else to risk another barrage of unpleasant comments by making a video on that aspect!
Hope you are enjoying your TC-540 - it's good that people are keeping these wonderful 40-plus year old recorders alive!
