De Gaulle était le plus grand président. He was the greatest president.

Not that much, theres still too much Brit resentment towards anything French, its amazing how it still is relevant today.

He famously said when he was accused of abandoning France’s friends. ‘ France does not have friends….it has interests’

I agree with independence from the USA. But in today's world, more than ever, there are only 2 powers of any consequence: America and China. Everyone else is either a vassal state or irrelevant. Even the EU is irrelevant on the world stage, as much as they like to think otherwise

It's "greatness?" Like in America, what does being "Great Again" even mean? Does that mean going back to colonialism and mercantilism? Burning bridges with fellow democracies for the feeling of "greatness?" France is a massive economic power and financially better off than it was in the 1800s and 1900s. I wouldn't trade my contemporary time in America for the 1950s or 1800s. I'm sure you wouldn't trade yours eighter.

De Gaulle was not a smart person. He was a very pompous and pretentious man who did not understand the significance and importance of NATO. The only good thing he did was ending the war in Algeria. His Constitution of 1958 was a disaster. It practically created a monarchy.

Pulling out was a signature move of his. He betrayed the Pied Noir population in French Algeria and pulled out of the Nato integrated command structure. Sure, it made sense from a domestic political perspective and it fit French foreign policy ambitions but he sure was greasy about parts of it.
