This is the most realistic and honest description of a career in geoscience that I've seen... quite well done! After taking chemistry and physics in High School, I took Geology 101 as an elective course my first semester in college. After two degrees and a 30-year career as a petroleum geologist (exploration and production) I retired in 2009. Confucius said, "Choose a job you like, and you will never work a day in your life."

I knew someone in college who became a geologist. She had apparently always been VERY gung-ho about working outside. While I can fully appreciate its importance and why someone might find the field interesting/rewarding, it had NEVER passed my mind to pursue such a field when I was in college. I once entertained the thought of oceanography/ marine science, however, and the two fields could potentially have a lot of overlap.

Ive always wanted a field involving discovery, i bounced from yearning to be a archeologist to a marine biologist but geology and the way you've described the career really makes me believe its the right one for me, thanks so much for the video!

As a mountain biker, i became a student in geology at 50 years old, the amount of information gathered and analysis in one year made me a knowledgeable and interesting rider to be around.. I corrected many locals guy and taught them basic principles about the area. My favourite answer is always starting with ," as a geologist we think ......." and i analyse the traffic with them.
Yesterday the marshall of the mountain spent 1 hour with me when i explained to him that mountain, the soil, the rocks and, the original name of that place and plug them together... I am in cape town and it s not very easy to accuratly describe to the locals , their area, and Names of intrusive batholith and lacolith and original names . I do with a smiling confidence.
Most of my local friends ask me if that rock is special or no. I always tell them , that they should tell me about it, no me as i am a foreigner. Geology is an open book , a passion for life. Tonight i am on my microscope and watch youtube with a pen and paper.
Part of what I'm trying to do here is to show the general public how closely geology is tied into every part of their daily life. If you make that connection, most people suddenly find rocks a lot more interesting!

My collection is growing . I have so far...Komatiite, Petrified wood , Kimberlite , Carbonado black D, (yes) and different crystal and minerals. I became specialist in architecture, repair and maintenance on granite, limestone, marble, travertine and more. That is not a job, it is a passion in my element .Thank you for your superbe channel.
Im watching this video on my desk while I'm working on Cu greenfield proyect.Tomorrow i'm leaving for 3rd consecutive month to literally the wildest Colombian jungle in the middle of the tropical area. That's the great thing about geology. There's a flavour for everyone!
Most geologists end up in environmental consulting, water resources, support for engineers, teaching, or other pursuits that often do not involve much of what is presented in this video. Full-time Exploration Geologists are kind of rare. Their jobs are often temporary. You have to be drawn to projects that tend to be risky but with high reward. Not for the faint of heart. Visionary people with some discipline. Many exploration geologists would work for free (if they could) because it is that cool, fun, exciting, and rewarding. Pedal down folks, the phone is ringing........
It certainly isn't the career for everyone, but there are lots of options for people with the right stuff.
I’m not planning on becoming a geologist but I am required to take geology 1 and 2 in my university studies as it’s part of the job I’m planning to get in to which is an engineering degree with specialisation I’m mountains, mining and explosives is a way to summarise it, I am just starting to learn and as of yet is is still incredibly interesting and I’ve got around 3 and a half years left of studying but I’ve got high hopes, thanks for this.
There is a legedary divide between engineers and geologists. The world would be a better place if both disciplines had to study a little of the other side at university!

I do have an interest in geology but moreso geography, I am currently trying to combine art (graphic design) and GIS as a potential career, because I love the visual aspect and I feel not many people have combined those two fields much. I am going to take a course evaluating what I want to do as a career to see if I can make it work. This video was very helpful, thank you for making the world a better place.
That sounds like a good approach. If you identify what you are good at and how you can make a career out of it, then work will be fun.
I finished high school a year ago and I graduated from geography also. Currently learning to become a vet assistant (I chose this because I didn't really have any idea what do I want to study later) and I'm into geology like I've never before. I want to study it but I don't know if I've got what it takes since I was bad at chemistry, math wasn't my favourite subject and I didn't care much about physics either. Now I regret for not paying attention and studying hard.
If it really inspires you, all of those things can be overcome. You don't have to be a great mechanic to drive a car well.

I spent a lot of my life telling myself I could never be a scientist because of my learning disabilities, but I’m about to go to college and I’m realizing I’m not as bad at school stuff as I thought I was. I like science and I’ve worked hard at getting better. I don’t know if I’ll go into geology or other forms of science but I might give it a shot and this video was helpful.
You dont have to be a genius. If you are good at seeing patterns in nature then geology might be a good fit.

I find all science interesting , the rate of a pendulum variable because of the force of gravity varies 2 Pi root L over g & a long pendulum show earth rotation . I studied Machine tools ,then worked at a place that made radio push button tuners & at Plantpack Mundon essex vac & pressure forming of seed trays & until I retired to move to Spain at 58 worked at Calorex heat pumps in Maldon Essex elec circuit designer , then later with my friend Peter Montague the plumber installed "No leak "A/ C .2 Lathes here , just love Engineering . Was Apprentice at long gone Cromptons in Chelmsford in the measurement section R & D 62 to 65 m we had free University education at Chelmsford poly technic gained my BSc .Hope this is not too boring , but engraved on a brass plare above our door was our motto still used today " Necesitat non habet legem "

I live in Spain in the village of Gaianes & often find small limestone rocks with a gold glitter & what must be Qwartz cristal , the mountain to the north is Benicadell ,Arabic for son of the beneficent & surely is ,we have very cheap hard water ,& underground seepage for our olive trees , a bumper harvest on Roman built terraces the ones high up on the mountain level to within 3 cm , the best olive oil in the world sweet & low acid & in Small quantities drinkable . Olive trees originated from Syria. Brought her by Roman sailors , one variety that we cant get is one that when ripe is sweet & apart fron the seed is edible .An interesting Geological question , how did olive trees sudden become .Olive flowers are fertilised by a tiny fly .When I lived in Holland on sea , mum still alive & stepfather too , in the garage was a cracked in half meteorite he found on a Maidstone park , goldish colour the size of a small sausage ,

Australia is a great place to work and there is a big demand for geologists now. It's a pity international travel is so difficult.
I was originally going to double major in geology and a foreign language, but ran out of money and time so I settled for a minor instead. In graduate school I was able to research a field of my choice, as long as I conducted my research in Chinese, I chose to research water issues in rural China. I was planning on continuing to study hydrology in China, but my plans were cut short by the pandemic, and also a desire to work to provide a future for myself and my fiancee. For now I have a comfy job as an English teacher, but I just had a conversation the other day with my fiancee, and she is encouraging me to continue my studies. I think she's right. So I'm planning on working for a few more years, and then going back to school to finish what I started. I've been thinking it might be a good idea to get some books and do a little self-study in my free time, just to refresh my memory on things, anyone have any recommendations?
Geology is a less stable source of income than teaching, but if you love what you do, there is always a way.

I've got 1 year to choose my lifepath. I'm extremely passionate about mountaineering, climbing, the outdoors and mountains. I'm a science lover and am in love with maps. Would this be a great field to be out in the wilderness on a daily basis? If so what are some great colleges to choose from? (Europe/America)
Sounds like you have a great combination of skills and passion for exploration geology. The best college is the one with the most enthusiastic people. Look at their websites to see what the people are working on and then email the people who work on projects you like. Go to the college where you get the most enthusiastic response.
Very interesting presentation... It seems you are leaning on Quartz ribs/Dolostone or dolomite.
The outcrops at the start of the video are actually gossans after serpentinite ultramafic rocks. They have strong carbonate alteration which makes a similar weathering pattern to dolomitic rocks.

I have been documenting myself about this domain, geology, and I come to realise this is something I want to pursue. Although, I want to know, what is the most notable difference between engineering geology and geology? And which one you think its the most interesting? Thank you ! :)
Engineering geology is mostly to do with the physical properties of rocks where they are involved in various construction type projects. Geology is pretty much everything else to do with understanding how rocks formed and what they can tell us about the past and future. Exploration Geology (my field) is about finding mineral resources in rocks.

My step daughter is very interested in the geology. As my background is in the resource industry I am a hundred percent behind her she is only in high school but is looking for future education where she can meet her Gold's and dreams becoming a geologist.

We are all part of the resource matrix. We drive cars, we use phones, we live in houses we eat food from mechanized farms. All of those things consume mineral resources. The challenge is how to do that with the least impact possible and geologists in many disciplines are at the front end of that challenge.

Mineral exploration geologists are the front line finding resources of lithium, copper and a host of other metals that are required to build low carbon energy systems and infrastructure.
I am a sophomore in highschool.
In my junior and senior years, I plan on taking HL Computer Science, HL Chemistry, HL Geography, SL AA Math.
Are these good choices if I were to be in the field of geology? Would universities accept this even if I don't take HL Math?
Check with the universities where you might study and ak what the requirements are for entry. My undergraduate university required physics, chemistry and maths to enter their geology degree course.
Hey, I was really wondering - is it possible to keep a relationship? It seems hard to be separated for long times. I would love a job like that, and the one thing I'm concerned most about is the relationship with a partner.
That is a tough side to the job, particularly in the exploration sector where work rotations tend to be longer and sites tend to be more remote. With that said, most sites these days have reasonable internet connectivity which makes video calls possible and that is a real savior for relationships. Geology jobs in mining and other sectors tend to have much shorter rotations now so family life is not quite so disjointed.

So I love to look on google earth for signs of ancient waterlines, waterways, looking at sand dunes trying to figure out if they were formed by water or wind, trying to find the remnants of ancient flooding or weather events. Is there a term for ancient or historical geology or does the understanding of the past state of our planet tie right in to geology as a whole? Thanks very much! What you are describing is probably closer to paleogeomorphology, but that merges with geology as the rocks get older.

I’m currently studying geology and astrophysics at uni in the UK. I love geology, more specifically planetary geology; however I don’t know of anyone who knows the specifics about this field of geoscience…
It's not my field either, but it is becoming progressively more popular as we send more vehicles with more and better sensors to other planets and other celestial bodies. Some of them are now bringing back samples that give us a unique perspective on the world, the universe and everything!
Is it very difficult to find a job more specific to seismology or volcanology?
Most of those jobs are in academia, but there is an increasing demand for them in the risk assessment area for government organizations and insurance companies, particularly if you have some other qualifications or experience to broaden your knowledge.

I started college as an engineer and realized it wasn’t for me and I wanted to go into a science. So I picked Geology and I’ll be graduating with my degree in a year. Geology has SO many different career options from Exploration to Gemologist, you could even work at a museum. I’m going to be working in the mining sector. Depending on your school the geology courses are small so you can really get to know your professors. Don’t give up and you’ll enjoy it, I Do!

I have so many stones that i just collected that are so strange here in Ipswich QLD some of them magnitise to things and others look like they've been bubbled over some have shells with it almost looks like petrified wood or bone with shells inside of them aged corrosion and blue and have holes all over the surfaces of them. some of them look so strange i was just wondering if you'd be able to help me identify them, if there's a place i'm able to contact you or someone here in Ipswtich i really think this is something, and the passion just keeps me diggin somewhere i know no research about but assured that there's more. i'd love to see what these are, because there's flakes and glimmers throughout most of these stones but its not gold nor silver but shines like steel in the sun. my first thought was a meteor but i ruled that out because i guess its near impossible to find but the magnetized large rocks sway my convincing prediction of a meteor
27 is not too old to study geology if it is your passion. I studied with several "mature age" students at university. Their more worldly perspective gave them some advantages over us greenhorns. All of the rocks and minerals you describe (including the magnetic ones) are formed by earth processes. No meteorite required, as you will discover if you study geology!

That's a tough one. There are lots of opportunities for exploration geologists around the world now, but travel issues are making it difficult to take advantage of them. I would always advise students to pursue what interests them. If your job is interesting, it will always be easy.

Companies based in Australia, Canada and US are the most active, but they have projects in many countries. The most important thing is which countries you can travel to most easily.
I know of a missing link in the education of geologists. When we look at the many horizontal layers that we find throughout our planet, we clearly see the effect of a repeating cataclysm. These disasters are mentioned in ancient books like the Mahabharata of India and the Popol Vuh of the Mayans and others. They tell us about a cycle of seven disasters that separate the eras from the world. Certainly, regularly recurring global disasters cannot be caused by asteroid impacts or volcanic eruptions. The only possible cause is another celestial body, a planet, orbiting our sun in an eccentric orbit. Then it is close to the sun for a short period and after the crossing at a very high speed it disappears into the universe for a long time. Planet 9 exists, but it seems invisible. At the end it covers the earth with a layer of mud, a mixture of sand, clay, lime, fossils of marine and terrestrial animals and meteorites. They also create a cycle of civilizations. Testing of theories like that is precisely what geologists do. The evidence is in the rocks. If you are keen to find the real answers for yourself, then I recommend that you study geology!

Depends where you are , just in my Valencian community 38,450 free University places & believe me such intelligent students discoveries that will save lives the Valencian region has more mountains than all in Europe ,by calculations of Ave length width & height of limestone there are hundreds of trillions of limestone Rock .In the NW of the Valencian province is an extinct volcano thar sill pumps out hot mineral spring & people pay to use & l believe the separate water I'd drinkable ! Our world is a marvel !

Great to hear you will study geology. The college or university that you choose will depend on which branch of geology that you intend to study (environmental, mineral, oil, volcanology, seismology etc.) I am really not the best person to ask since I only work in mineral exploration and I don't work for a university. The people at your current college will probably have a better understanding of what is available. Beyond that, internet search engines are very useful. Just search for the branch that you want to study + "university".

There is much demand for geologists outside India now. The bottom line is to focus on the countries where you can most easily travel and then make contact with exploration and mining companies that have operations in those countries.

I have done some in person mentoring in the past, but I found I could reach a lot more people by making videos. I still do some ad-hoc face to face training during my consulting work for clients if they have young geologists on the team.

When you're in Mt Isa it seems like a big mine, but when you fly out, you realize what a tiny dot it is in the australian landscape and it's amazing to think of all the human benefits that have come out of that tiny dot over the last century.
