Exactly! It defeats the original purpose of copyrights in the first place. Copyrights are meant to ensure authors, creators and artists can profit off their own works for a limited amount of time and after that, then everyone can use and access them, so that we can build upon our culture and inspire creativity. But thanks to greedy corporations like Disney and estates, among others, we've been deprived of that repeatedly just to suit their own interests, thus setting back the public domain many years than where it's supposed to be!

Blame Disney for that. Originally, a work went into the public domain like 50 years after its creation but then Disney pulled some strings to pass this copyright extension act to add an additional 45 years or so to it, just so that they could keep making a few extra bucks off of trademarking Mickey Mouse.

For More information on when you can use Total Drama characters for those curious-- The only finalized character that is up for the public domain in 2103 is Geoff. You can still use the beta versions of Duncan, Leshawna, Lindsay, Trent, Gwen, Beth, Harold, Tyler, and DJ though along with the original name of total drama, Camp TV, but not the name total drama (Island, Action, or any of its respective seasons yet those are still copyrighted). So incase you wanna make a Camp TV horror movie with Geoff and the beta versions of some of your favorite characters, you can in 2103. The Total Drama Island franchise wouldn't become public domain until 2107, which is when the final designs of Chris, Chef, Ezekiel, Eva, Noah, Justin, Katie, Tyler, Izzy, Cody, Beth, Sadie, Courtney, Harold, Trent, Bridgette, Lindsay, DJ, Leshawna, Duncan, Heather, Gwen, and Owen are now public domain along with Geoffs design which was already public domain since 2103. You can now use the name "Total Drama Island" or just "Total Drama". I'm not sure about the Action or the other seasons though. 2109 is when the name "Total Drama Action" becomes public domain, along with the "Total Drama Action Aftermath" In late 2109, the original name for Total Drama World Tour, "Total Drama Musical" is now public domain. Not total drama world tour yet though. 2110 is when the characters Blaineley, Sierra, and Alejandro become public domain along with the name "Total Drama World Tour", and "Total Drama World Tour Aftermath" respectively. 2111 is when the beta designs for Total Drama Revenge of the Island characters come out. You cannot use the name "Total Drama Revenge of the Island" yet though, but you can use Total Drama Reloaded which was the original name for this season. Beta designs for characters like Mike, Cameron, Lightning, Sam, Anne Maria, Staci, Brick, Jo (originally named Mary meaning you can't use Jo yet only Mary), Dakota, Zoey, Scott, and Dawn (originally named Molly so you can't use the name Dawn yet only Molly). 2112 is when you can now use the name "Total Drama Revenge of the Island". The final designs of characters Staci, Dakota, B, Dawn, Brick, Anne Maria, Mike, Jo, Scott, Zoey, Lightning, and Cameron are now public domain. In 2113 the name "Total Drama All Stars" is now public domain" In late 2113, the beta designs for Sugar, Sky, Dave, Sammy, Rodney, Ella, Beardo, Amy, Shawn, Leonard, Jasmine, Max, Scarlett, and Topher are all public domain. 2114, the name "Total Drama Pahkitew Island is now public domain along with the final designs for Beardo, Leonard, Amy, Rodney, Sammy, Ella, Topher, Dave, Max, Scarlett, Jasmine, Sugar, Sky, and Shawn. In 2123, the Tota Drama Island reboot characters, Caleb, Axel, Nichelle, Scary Girl, Damien, MK, Wayne, Raj, Ripper, Zee, Chase, Emma, Julia, Millie, Bowie, and Priya are all public domain. In 2124 the finale of the second season of the Total Drama Island reboot would have become 100 years old but there was no new characters or titles to be copyrighted that would become public domain in 2124.
Imagine it: SpongeBob SquarePants: Bikini Bottom Brutality The Amazing World Of Gumball: The Murders The Fairly OddParents: Death Wish South Park: Killing More Than Kenny VeggieTales Apocalypse And more
I can't wait for these to also be released: The Backyardigans Brutality The Littlest Pet Shop of Horrors (name of an actual episode in the show) My Little Pony: Blood and Friendship Thomas & Friends: Sodor's Fate Ren & Stimpy's Downfall Bob The Builder: The Last Build Dora's Last Exploration Blue's Clues: Murder Mystery Barney's Death Trap
man public domains get me scared alot tbh. The fact on how it can ruin a show's reputation with anyone being able to make animations of the characters doing prob weird stuff.
I don't mind it, since it's freedom of expression and creativity and people can choose to ignore it and properly judge it at their own discretion. The corporations have too much power anyway
People do that regardless of the property being in public domain (see Rule 34) and it doesn't "ruin the reputation" of the property. People understand that the weird fan content is separate from the source material.
If you want to use any of these characters when they enter the public domain prepare to upload your consciousness to a computer because most of us aren't living to see many of these cartoons make it to the public domain or too old to even be aware
Important thing to note is for Ben 10 you'd only be able to use CLASSIC Ben, this means kid ben, kid gwen, and technically only 4 of his aliens. It might include all10 if the intro is anything but assuming thats the case they'd only be the simple styled versions instead of their real designs. But the aliens you'd be able to use as Heatblast, Wildmutt, Diamondhead, and XLR8 a big reason is cause while Ben 10 originally started in 2005 every episode past the pilot began airing in 2006 so you'd need to wait a whole year to use characters like Dr. Animo, Kevin 11, Cannonbolt, or even the concept of Max being a Plumber and what the Plumbers are. You also would only be able to use broken Vilgax so technically most of the stuff you get for Ben 10 comes out in 2102
I probably won't even be alive when Rayman enters the public domain. Unless some can transfer my conscience into a robot and that I can transfer my conscience into more newer model robots in case I become obsolete.
In most countries, it's usually life plus 70 years after the creator dies. But some countries follow the rule of the shorter term, where if the work is out of copyright in its home country, it's also public domain in the OTHER country. I have already lived to see Winnie-the-Pooh and Mickey Mouse enter the public domain. Heads up: a few Looney Tunes, Superman and Popeye cartoons failed to have their copyrights renewed.

You forgot two. The original version of THE ELECTRIC COMPANY will be public domain in 2067. (The 2009 reboot, 2105). READING RAINBOW will fall into public domain in 2079. As for The Eighth Wonder of the World, King Kong: The 1933 film and it' sequel SON OF KONG will be public domain in 2029. The film KING KONG VS. GODZILLA will enter the public domain in 2058 or 2059. KING KONG ESCAPES will enter the public domain in 2063 or 2064. The 1976 remake will enter the public domain in 2072. KING KONG LIVES will enter the public domain in 2082. Peter Jackson's remake will enter the public domain in 2101. KONG SKULL ISLAND will enter the public domain in 2113. Nice video there. Good job. 🙂
Petri1234 from furaffinity here, Robot chicken parodies a lot of characters Also, what if the copyright law was suddenly repealed and supplanted with a new one in some way that allowed public domain to exist TWO years after a creator’s death?
Doug already is in the public domain since he first appeared in grapefruit commercials without copyright notice A majority of commercial, cartoon, or comic characters are in the public domain due to this these include Garfield Odie Jon Charlie brown(lil folks) Snoopy(lil folks) Tom & jerry(human designs) The noid(dominos) Charlie the tuna Toucan Sam Silly rabbit(trix) Ronald McDonald(60s design) Speede(McDonald’s) The energizer bunny The Duracell bunny Count chocula Frankenberry Boo berry Fruit brute Cornelius rooster(corn flakes) Kermit the frog Rawlph(muppets) Tweety bird Charlie dog Bosko the talk ink kid Foxy(looney tunes) The pillsbury dough boy
Health and science improvements expanding the human lifespan might be justify to extend the copyright. This rationale was used to extend the copyright in 1998.
3:35 But, the characters and story of Teen Titans were not created in 2003, they were created as comics first, so i believe that they should become public domain way sooner, right?
Cartoons should become public at least 10-20 years after their release. It would be very useful if the authors had a creative crisis. And then they could evaluate the work of fans, be inspired by it, or even buy them out from fans and broadcast their work in movies and on TV. So, due to the creativity of fans, cartoons would never go into stagnation
Total drama was made in (canada). (yes i am quebecois/canadian) Our copyright system is a bit different then the USA, 70 years following the death the author. There is no way bigger corporations want to own to profit off of this franchise. Only time will tell when the countdown will begin for real, i am not lawyer. Great work keep it up 👍.
I almost forgot to mention Total Drama was produced in Canada. It is a foreign-made work like Thomas & Friends, so its hard to tell when it will become public domain in the US
Informative video on the topic. However, would SpongeBob go PD sooner because of Hillenburg's passing? (also goes for any other cartoon creators that are no longer with us)
Life + 70 Years rule does not apply to works owned by a corporation or produced by a group of people. Instead, it will be 95 years after production of the pilot finished
speaking of public, i really want the assets from hello kitty: super style! to be released to the public so that people can make fan animations, or maybe even edit the source files.
In the beginning at 0:44-0:52, you said that the Public Domain Law does not apply specifically towards certain types of Media, such as TV Shows, Movies, Video Games, etc. Is there a reason why that's the case, but everything else applies to that law? And if that's the case, when/how will they eventually do go into free Copyright for everyone to use those as well in the future? It would be very cool seeing a different company for example make a Game about Super Mario besides Nintendo. Or have a Crossover between Metal Gear and Halo. Better yet, make a kids movie about some of the Iconic Horror Characters such as Freddy Kreuger and Jason Voorhees. I would like to know your thoughts about this.

Man, there's no guarantee most of us 2000's kids will be alive by the time the earliest TV shows copyrights expire, they should change the copyright law for TV shows to expire by the time the shows get cancelled cause what's the point of keeping them if they don't plan on continuations 💀
If I was a lawmaker, I would say 20 years after the series concludes would be reasonable. If it's a long runner with no signs of stopping like The Simpsons, I would say 50 years after the pilot aired.
Don't worry Teletubbies already has a horror project that was released and we know the name so by the time Teletubbies has entered public domain whoever makes a horror project they will be late to the party

@@ArtieRaccoonReviews You are welcome. 🙂
I would be 84 years old by the time SpongeBob entered public domain, so I may or may not be alive to see the internet and world go to extreme chaos.
Extreme chaos? What do you mean?
Petri1234 from furaffinity here, Robot chicken parodies a lot of characters
Also, what if the copyright law was suddenly repealed and supplanted with a new one in some way that allowed public domain to exist TWO years after a creator’s death?
Ok ko going public domain will be lit for the fanbase
Yeah! Assuming I live that long I'd be able to profit off of a planned spinoff series I had in mind based on Puck Reverie.
I doubt humanity will last this long
Why?
@@exoticbutters4301Because of climate change.
Doug already is in the public domain since he first appeared in grapefruit commercials without copyright notice

The Teen Titans entering the public domain in 2099 will be only THOSE teen titans the original run of Teen Titans will be public domain around 2060
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Teen Titans may enter the public domain a bit earlier than 2099 since it was originally a comic book
Public domain is gonna last every year forever
I wonder when my cartoon characters will go into Public Domain.
I was robbed of my childhood ever since hey arnold ended without a series finale wasting my time
Health and science improvements expanding the human lifespan might be justify to extend the copyright. This rationale was used to extend the copyright in 1998.
I just want all good shows to have a happy ending on time
I wish I could live forever so I could use theses characters
I wish if I can go back in time to create all these characters before their origin time existing so I will be the origin creator😂
3:35 But, the characters and story of Teen Titans were not created in 2003, they were created as comics first, so i believe that they should become public domain way sooner, right?
You're correct
Cartoons should become public at least 10-20 years after their release. It would be very useful if the authors had a creative crisis. And then they could evaluate the work of fans, be inspired by it, or even buy them out from fans and broadcast their work in movies and on TV. So, due to the creativity of fans, cartoons would never go into stagnation
I agree with you!
It is a foreign-made work like Thomas & Friends, so its hard to tell when it will become public domain in the US
I didn't want to be interested in the franchise being endless depending on how long it would last
I can’t imagine the things I would do when Sidekick becomes public domain.
I don't like this
Thanks, your video was helpful! And I did the math, Tankmen, the Newgrounds animated webseries won't be in the public domain until 2101.
In the 2030s, Snow White, Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi will be public domain.
The Lion King?
But they said that copyright would extended in a decade or two
I’ll be 103 by the time I can use Total Drama fairly. Time to start saving for Cryogenic Freezing…
I don’t wanna have to wait 69 years for SpongeBob 🥺🥺
Nice.
Go freeze yourself and time travel
Let's just hope we all will survive years later as soon as they become public domain
@@ArtieRaccoonReviewsOh. I didn't know that
speaking of public, i really want the assets from hello kitty: super style! to be released to the public so that people can make fan animations, or maybe even edit the source files.
WOAH! THAT'S A LONG TIME FROM THE FUTURE!!!!!
They make it this way so they don’t expire when you’re alice

I gave Artie the idea. We'd have to wait until 2099 to use Mona, Jimmy T, 9-Volt, Orbulon, Dr. Crygor and Kat & Ana.

That's half of our lifetime and almost all of it bruh
