Grandpa Jones and Stringbean were the best of friends, on and off stage. In fact, String and Grandpa owned a small farm together. It must have been devastating for Grandpa Jones to find his best friend and his wife shot to death. In my opinion, the killers should have been given the death penalty. Rest in Peace Stringbean, Estelle, Grandpa and Ramona Jones.
Herald "Hawkshaw" Hawkins died the same day and same way as Pasty Cline. They had flown to Kansas City for a concert and on the flight home there was a plane crash. It killed everyone on board.
@@randallbundy108 Nothing really but if you watched the video there was a little clip that he showed of Herald 'Hawkshaw" Hawkins grave and he commented that he wasn't sure who that was. I was helping to clarify that.
Jason, thank you again for treating our lost friends with such respect. Much respect to you. I also really enjoyed Stringbean on Hee Haw!, and mentioning him brings back lots of good memories. Thank you again for taking such good care of our collective history.
I was eight when the murders happened. I would like to see a movie made about String and Estelle. I’ve always thought John Torturro and Rene Zellweger would be excellent choices to cast in the project.
@@BackRoads1 Yep, That was my thinking as well, Especially Toturro, he looks like string more than a bit. Hey thanks again for your post. I listened to String all the way into work this morning. Miss his talent a lot.🎶
Eventually , string beans money was located by someone building a fire in the cabin. They noticed money on fire floating around. Turns out , he hid the money behind some bricks up in the chimney. That’s why they never could find it. Tragic ending indeed.
It was a very sad day in Nashville that day. Of the murder of stringbean and his wife Estelle. R.i P David stringbean Akeman and Estelle Akeman. Thanks for this story. And stay safe
Also there home became a tourist attraction & several years after these murders took place there was a child messing with the fireplace and when authority's checked out the fireplace a bunch of confetti began to pile up & it turned out this chimney was there hiding place with there life savings. This was a sad & useless tragedy All the way around. Thank you for covering the grave's of string beans & his wife.
That's right. What was left of an apparently large stash of cash was found behind the old fireplace mantle nearly 25 years after the murders. It was speculated that mice had made their nests out of it.
@@brenttravis4665 also the two cousins evaded arrest for quite awhile. The sheriff's dept. In that county had no lead until 1 of the men was intoxicated & was talking about the incident in a bar 1 night that eventually produced enough information to start a investigation that eventually led to their arrest & conviction.
@@tweedjohnny8740 I had forgotten that detail. I was a teenager when it happened, and it just seemed so surreal and shocking to all of us. Hee Haw was taped around June and again in the early fall for the entire season, so all of Stringbean's appearances were already on video. I remember watching him on the show months after the murders, and it felt very strange to me at that young age. Society has changed so much since then.
I remember seeing this one a few years back, glad to watch your video as well, as this man deserves to be remembered. A very nice, very humble man who loved the simple things in life. I like to imagine him and his wife, still fishing together in heaven. Thanks Jason. ❤️ Jodie 🇦🇺
Thanks Backroads for the good video as always. Always thought String bean with the crow and corn was always pretty neat. You need to get back on the golf course and make a video. Always enjoy them. 👍
oh my god thanks for that memory of stringbean looking for the letter, on hee haw was funny every time! and thanks for your videos i am somewhat new to following you , i enjoy each one that i see
I was a little boy when I met String Bean in the Smoky Mountains; sadly, just a few weeks later it was reported that he and his wife had been murdered! He was a very nice man!
Thank you for sharing Stringbean's story. I think they also got like $40 that Stringbean had on him. They and the Police 🚔 couldn't find money in his home. Years later, it was found in the fireplace mantle. But over time it disintegrated. So, there was nothing. And he and his wife were killed for nothing! Thanks again for sharing 😊
As you mentioned, it was thought that Stringbean kept large sums of money in his house because of his lack of trust in banks. Because of the frugal way he lived, he would have been seen as an easy target. This was why he was killed, although the killers never found the money. It's been said that $5,000 was found on his body and many years later, there was $20,000 in cash found behind a brick in the fireplace
I visited that cemetery a few years ago. I believe Lefty Frizzell is buried in music row as well. Hawkshaw Hawkins wife Jean shepherd is buried at the same cemetery as Johnny Cash.
If you watch the trial someone lied or the body was moved... one detective said Stringbean was found at the entrance of his door ... another said he was found by the fireplace. ...which one was it?
It was my bestfriend that told me about string bean and his wife's death. I was shocked.it seemed so cruel, cold and heartless. How cold can you be to kill string bean, his wife seeing this, she begging for her life, that's just cold. They didn't have to do it. Lot people didn't trust banks. Maybe if they had just asked for money, I believe mr string began would of gave them the cash he had on him, and maybe they would of just took that and left. I'm sure he wouldn't of wanted him and his wife to die like that. It was just senseless to do that to 2 sweet people who lived a simple life, wasn't flashy or fancy. I can only imagine Grandpa Jones finding his Best friend and his wife bodys. He must of been Devastated, no to mention in shock and disbelief. I'm told after that incident, that's when gates started going up in Nashville. My own grandfather was robbed and murdered. I can only imagine how thier family felt. My grandfather didn't trust banks either. Each time I saw reruns of Hee Haw. Saw String Bean, I just said how could anyone just be so heartless to kill him and his wife. If they had been in the house, didn't find anything, they should of just left. Maybe it's just me. I still say, they didn't have to do that. It was just stupid and senseless. I bet they probally been drinking when they came up with that stupid idea. They didn't get what they went there to get. They got caught. I bet they felt stupid. Most victims know thier killer. Sometime rumors get you killed. I guess to this day. String bean and his wife death bother me.they were 2 sweet innocent souls, whose life was taken by idiots. RIP to the both of them.🙏🕯🦋🕊🌻🌷✨🌠💐🌹. Love, respect and positivity always. ✌🙌🕯❤🖖🙂👋. Nj and family.

Envy of others possessions is a serious sin. RIP to Stringbean and his wife.
I remember when Stringbean and his wife died , such a loss . Drugs was always a problem LSD and others of the time .
It was do to large amounts of money he kept in the house .. not drugs Duh 🙄

Money is not the root of all evil. The Bible says The love of money is the root of evil
His killers got no money ZERO NOTHING. HE HAD HIS MONEY BEHIND THE BRICKS OF HIS FIREPLACE.
The money was found years later behind bricks of his fireplace - the killers got nothing no money. Life in prison.
I’d like to know more about Jimmy Capps that played the Officer on country diner country music
I remember Stringbean and ending so sad. I know he did Hee Haw! Thanks for sharing.
