    ~ Quite by accident, this talk became my meeting today. I am 30 plus years clean and sober and I, like so many others, completely related. For me, AA works if you live it.

    Many years ago, I was drunk walking up the street to the next bar, and this man looked at me, and held my eyes in a gaze of knowingness, The gaze was so powerful that i couldn't continue to drink that day, or forget it. I remember it to this day. One drunk to another..Now I understand..Best wishes John

    John, you say you'd like to meet some of those people today, that you knew in New Orleans, I'm one. I used to speak with you on the phone in the afternoons after school, after riding the public service bus home in the afternoons, with you there, doing your antics, in front of the driver, driving him crazy. My name was Alicia O'Keefe. You had your false name and I had mine. It's when I was 14; I told you I was 16. You were 17, and we'd talk about home work, the fact that you were a latch key kid (today's term.) We talked for hours for months and my friend who was in love with you, was listening on the other phone; she was too shy to call you and put me up to it. You drew "Yokums" on all the trash cans at the bus stops. I once sent you a Bhagavad-Gita book in the mail, when I read you're into authors. Hope you got it.

      Ron Mabry Thank you. Wish I would have done it sooner. The detox part was scary but so far it's really not that bad. I can live without alcoholism, I simply cannot live without my family. Sad that it almost came down to losing my Wife and kids.

    I love the 12 steps what I don't like though is much of the spiritual bypassing that goes on with old timers. What I don't like is the AA self righteousness of many members and their inability to understand those of us who are addicts but also trauma survivors and that yes we share addictions but those who have not been through the grinder and just got addicted to substances don't really understand. I believe recovery groups are divided into two types of members : victims of abuse and abusers in other words prey and predators. The predators usually highly narcissistic start drinking when their narcissism no longer gives them the kicks it is supposed to give and the preys drink after they gone through the grinder of narc abuse.

    • @afaceinside1210
      @afaceinside1210 8 років тому +3

      Yeah, that's AA speak for non conforming to "the program" or "not doing the steps". There's only ONE step: Don't drink! and your 1st goal on your list of goals everyday of your life should be 1.) Sobriety. The rest is upto you! ;)

    • @rosssessoms5287
      @rosssessoms5287 8 років тому +3

      That pink cloud was real too, I found out. That lifted. Cold reality now but, I have plans and rocking on at 9 months sober. I am not too fond of the militant AA clan. Looking for a better class of people. Being told by someone popping pills but doesn't drink that I am a dry drunk really ticked me off. Then again, seems to be that dudes problem. Life is SO MUCH BETTER; I want others to know this for sure. It's a rough ride to this point but always getting smoother. Anxiety and depression has simply disappeared.

    • @rosssessoms5287
      @rosssessoms5287 8 років тому +1

      aFaceInside Thanks. Only 9 months into it. I am in Fullerton CA and ran into some scumbags. You are so right too because the dude also said I am not working a good program. The dude's a loser for sure though. It was my idea to get sober and my idea to stay that way. As I said, turns out that guy is popping pills.

    • @krisscanlon4051
      @krisscanlon4051 8 років тому +1

      +Ross Sessoms 4 and half years clean and I detested all of what others/oldtimers told me but it didn't make it any less true, more will be revealed. and my plans change to more like day to day and just for that day. I watch for my plans being expectations which can be a preresentment. An oldtimer who had 24 years to my one year in 2013 said that I had more sober days in those 365 then he did cuz sobriety is temp thing and for me not to forget it. he meant being a dry drunk and now I understand lil better.

    Who cares if he's famous? You don't get any brownie points in AA unless it's from people who going about it for other reasons. No prestige, no props, no extra credit for being a big name. If you do then it's not real anyway. They're just people.
