This battle shows the difference between southerns old sound vs their sound now. Loud, strong, simple, and overlapping/doubling parts for different horns versus the overcomplicated, overdone, cinematic sound they have now. Imo Southern excelled best when it comes to simple and aggressive but this is to be expected between different directors. But man 2015/16 and 2018/19 southern was on straight demon time!
This was a good description of their old sound.

I like this old SU. Directors matter. For the same reason I like what JSU is doing currently. Kev and the Rap tune dude were great additions to the staff. Everything changed when they started writing to highlight the trumpets more

I’m sure Ked and the assistants heard hell from the alumni and gonna get back to that aggressive, and powerful sound the S is known for.
