  • In this video, I show you how I replaced the coolant expansion tank on my Vauxhall Mokka 1.4SE Turbo. Taking less than half an hour and using just a few simple tools, this will save you about £100 in garage fees.

    Excellent video and tips - particularly about removing the body panel cover studs. Not great with cars but changed my split tank in 30 minutes.

    My Vauxhall dealer told me I have a leak on the tank and it will need replacing. I've looked at it and can't see or feel any damp and don't seem to be losing any coolant. They quoted £164 , they reduced it to £120 when I said it was too much. Think I'll do it myself as I've seen tanks for sale on the internet for about £20

  • @uk.teenage.female.clay.shooter

    I think this may be a common issue, as I have discovered many fractures in the underside of my tank, slowly losing coolant. I dont suppose you have a video on removing the rear spoiler to replace the washer jet???

    Hello is there not a sensor on bottom of these like the 1.4 astra of the same year

      There wasn't a sensor on mine, perhaps it's dependent on the model variant.

    My tank needs replacing and I'm getting ready to do it but now my mechanic has come to say i should remember to do the bleeding. I dont know what that is and he wouldn't say. None of the videos talks about bleeding. Is there anything like that or is my mechanic trying to make me bring it to him to do it and bill me bad as he likes to. I don't want his heart aching bill but still dont wanna spoil my car.

      I must start by stressing that I am not a car mechanic, so I am giving this information in good faith based on my own "DIY" experience. Changing the expansion tank as shown in the video should not introduce any significant amount of air into the system. If any air does enter the hoses, it's usually possible to eject it back into the expansion tank with a couple of squeezes of the hose once reconnected. With the engine running, coolant is pumped around the system back into the expansion tank and my understading is that, as the expansion tank is at the highest point of the cooling system, any air should naturally find its way into the tank where it can be vented off by releasing the tank cap. There are videos on UA-cam showing how to bleed the cooling system which are little more than running the engine until the fan comes on and then, once cooled down, opening the expansion tank and topping up as necessary. Hope this helps.

    Brilliant video, thank you!! Did you find any air pockets with your change? My coolant has gone down a little bit since doing the same as this video - does the air work it’s way out driving normally even with the cap on?

      @Ap01101969  10 місяців тому +1

      Thank you. The coolant will get pumped round the circuit whilst the engine is running, so I would expect any air to find its way into the expansion tank quite quickly. Make sure you top it up if needed.

    Hi, great vid, very informative and useful, would this be classed as a complete coolant change? As mines needs done because the coolant is black lol.

    • @Ap01101969
      @Ap01101969  2 роки тому

      Hi Dan,
      No, to replace all the coolant you will need to drain the radiator, either by disconnecting the bottom hose or undoing the drain plug if the radiator has one.

    Great video! I have a question tho...I asked my mechanic if I could change it myself and he said the coolant system needs be pressurised or something ( I am not an expert so I don't know if this is a thing ) . It will cost me around £40 with new coolant . On your video it looks like I can easily do it myself . Did you have to do anything extra after the tank was replaced ? Thanks in advance

    • @Ap01101969
      @Ap01101969  2 роки тому

      I'm no mechanic, but not aware that the cooling system needs to be pressurised. Perhaps they meant it should be pressure tested when the tank is changed? The cap contains an integral pressure relief valve to prevent too much pressure building up in the system when hot.

    • @soton1989

      So would you suggest going to the mechanic or should I do it myself and it will be fine?

    • @Ap01101969
      @Ap01101969  2 роки тому

      @@soton1989 I'm sure if you do it yourself, it will be fine, but to be honest, if a mechanic can replace the tank and the coolant for £40, you're probably unlikely to save much by doing it yourself.

    Is the crack visible and was you loosing alot of coolant

    • @Ap01101969
      @Ap01101969  2 роки тому

      Yes, there was a definite crack on the underside of the tank, and it was losing a fair bit of coolant. It later transpired that I had a small leak in the radiator too so not sure how much loss was due to each.

      No, I didn't find it necessary. If a little air did get into the system, it would soon find its way into the tank.
