I think it's very effective to lengthen and highlight the relaxed runout of this song, which was the first really composed vocal she released. Jellybean's signatures were of course, state of the art at the time and have not dated.

Always liked this early Madonna track. It initially flopped in the UK on its original release. It was reissued in 1986 when it reached No2 on the UK chart, kept off the top spot by Diana Ross's Bee Gees produced "Chain Reaction"

If this Remix is real, I’d love to know how it came into being, where it came from & which vault it’s been stored in all these years?
It’s been a long long time since this track sounded Fresh, but this mix totally does!

I can see why it was rejected at the time (if it was done at the time which i'm not sure it was). It's beautiful and shimmery but it complicates the themes . They were adamant about the producion on every number from that album and did no changes to arrangements .on extended mixes. there was an exact plan with each song and the drum sounds were key to the whole album. He adds snare sounds and jazz themes here. They wanted a very specific limited drum palette on that album because she was heralding the machine music . Borderline was the lightest and even used a recycled keyboard sound from the Stephanie Mills era. It was probably composed during the breakout period of Stephanie's first album and only mildly changed for Madonna but the basic drum sounds were something she was adamant about and even had Jellybean remix when necessary to get right. When she started to lose the plot after Who's That Girl feelers were sent out to the gay clubs to get a sense of what should come next. If you ask certain gay men they remember talking at some point to people who knew either Pat Leonard or Warner A and R. All of the gay men asked said the same thinng" get her back to that street level feel and those basic drum programming sounds on the first album and on Into The Groove. If sh'e's in doubt take her "home ". Then came the Shep mixes on Express Yourself and then came Vogue because they had to get her back to where she came from in order to guarantee the trajectory they wanted. it was also "convenient" that she ditched Sean because gays hated him too and he wouldn't win them over again until Milk. Christopher Anderson's biography pained Sean as a POS homophobe but i think what he hated was prissy bitchy gay men that she kept in her company because they are catty and annoying to even us gay men in general. slightly less now they've realized they need sense of humour and can't be total cunz thank God but we were all sick of them at the time.
