The place is amazing. The view is one of a kind. I'm from Bulgaria and support the restoration of the monument (i'm not communist). It will be a good museum but nobody from the politics care. The party that rule now doesn't want to be connected in any kind with communist and the opposition (the kids of old communist) support it, but only if they put the rules how the restoration will be done (they will hire their people and firms to make the restoration, one word only MONEY is what they care....) So that is the sad true about the monument, I have visited it this summer and was amazing.
I am 48 now. When I was a child communism had killed millions. When I became an adult it had killed tens of millions. Now it has killed one hundred million - apparently. I expect that at this rate the number of communism's victims will be approaching the billions by the time I pass away. If true it will be catching up with combined tally of colonialism, imperialism and capitalism.
@@aquilarossa5191 you must have been a bad student or lived in a communist state as even in Communist Bulgaria we knew about the Mao death toll, the concentration camps in Bulgaria and the Soviet union and the existence of some political prisoners during my time (and I am 43 now). Потрясающее место! Я сам родился в Советском Союзе, - глядя на эти кадры, я понимаю, что мы не просто страну потеряли в 1991-м, - мы потеряли целую цивилизацию.
The vandalism physically hurts me to see. Like that beautiful panning shot of the tower, ending with some graffiti. It made a rage in my chest build up I could hardly believe. It's just so disgraceful. I can only imagine the karma of the person who did that. They deserve whatever comes to them.
Although the Bulgarian Socialist Party has made attempts to make the government fund its restoration, they failed. They even wanted the government to sell them the monument so they could restore it themselves, which also failed. Most Bulgarians, though, being anti-communist with all the western propaganda spread since the 90s, do not wish to (costly) restore such a powerful symbol of communism.

Was the star designed to be viewed from close to the base or perhaps high above and looking at an angle? The elongated "tails" of the star remind me of how advertising is painted onto sports fields in that weird stretched way so they look correct from one specific camera angle, and of course the communist star did not have elongated tails like that.
