  • This video shows a proposed new activity for the Mt Druitt Library STEM Club. It is the microbit Smart Bin and is intended to increase awareness of students about environmental issues. In this case it is about bin management. Students will also learn something about electronics and coding.
The smart bin uses a microbit with two sensors and a LED warning device.
The key sensor is a LASER TOF (Time of Flight) range finder and this measure the capacity of the bin. When you load more rubbish into the bin the distance measured decreases. A Grove TOF sensor is used.
A PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) - A Grove PIR is used to detect if a person approaches the bin and this switches on the warning light to indicate if the bin is full and it also indicates the remaining capacity of the bin.
A Grove RGB neopixel mini strip is used for the warning light.
If the bin lid is opened the RGB mini strip light goes blue otherwise it shows red for full and green for empty. If the bin is 10% full then one LED on the strip goes red while the other nine go green.
All of the Grove devices are connected to a BitMaker board and microbit.
    Makecode is used for coding.
