Football coverage in general has fallen off a cliff compared to what it was, Ally is the only saving grace for ITV.
Spain did win 3-0, but Croatia had a goal disallowed. I think the point is England haven't let any shots in.

Most of the media and comment section 'fans' don't deserve him. He's a gift. The squad win and keep a clean sheet and people call it ugly. This squad should blank it all out and just focus on doing it for themselves and their families and all the coaching staff.

It’s hard to believe this guy is only 20 years old. That was a smart and articulate interview and the guy looks like a born captain on the field.
Asking if it was an ugly win. Really? Give some credit to Serbia, a well organised physical team. And England got the result we needed against them.
Winning ugly doesn't imply the opposition were poor. Ugly normally means the opposition made it difficult (i.e. played well)

As a non-Englishman, I think England’s support, or lack thereof, has been one of their biggest obstacles since Southgate took over, possibly before that too.

I mean we can't deny Kane's quality. Apart from the pace that Watkins and maybe Toney have, he can do everything they can do.
I blame Foden tbh for not staying wide enough. We know Kane's game is to drop deep and find a pass to wingers. But only Saka was available as Foden kept coming inside and never stayed wide and Trippier never got high enough. If we played Gordon instead of Foden, Trent can play those long balls to him and then we would have an attacking outlet down the left as well
The issue is most people who analyse kane have never played a game of football at any level.. kane had to sacrifice parts of his game to stay high.. factually with foden there's no width and i personally wouldn't play him. Over an out and an out winger as width is what will win us the tournament not 15 number 10s
Kane seems never perform at the biggest stage ... still remember his Champions League final performance.
The problem is hyping the team up so much that a 1-0 win is no longer satisfactory. Well done by Serbia overall.

And after 20 minutes we slow down because it's tiring to keep pressing so much.
So eventually our opponents get to make more passes and grow into the game.
Despite playing so well in the first 20 minutes we still only had one shot.
We struggle to creat chances and we struggle to control entire games.
It's been like this for years.
It is not v a team as bad as this.
@@zorzobukumica628I don’t believe Southgate instructed them to sit back. I think the reason is partly psychological and partly technical. We have some great players but are lacking a ball playing pivot, someone brave on the ball who can beat the press with short progressive passes. England have a tendency to become fearful on the ball in their own third when under pressure. They aren’t able to exert control through possession. It’s actually got much better as our coaching systems is producing more technical players, I’m especially excited about Mainoo as he is great at receiving the ball under pressure and playing progressively.
It's baffles me that this man is only 20, not because of his talent and potential but the way he speaks and conducts himself. Incredible 👏

I'm not from England but watching from the outside I feel like there is so much more potential in this team. Of course the win is always the most important achievement but its really weird to watch how this England team makes life difficult for themselves. The team is world class in almost every position and dominated Serbia in the first half, but why not go for a 2nd or 3rd goal and kill the game?
It often seems like England is playing down to their opposition which can get really dangerous in a tournament. Giving up the control of the game in the second half was shocking considering Serbia has absolutely nothing in the first half.

I have my reservations about Southgate like many of us do but it’s the opening match of the tournament and win. I remember the years we would hardly qualify out of the group in a total panic. Shortly after we’d crash out in the quarters. Relax folks, these are good players. His attitude tells us that he knows something that we don’t, he’s not bothered.

Absolutely bang on from Jude. A win in the opening game, Clean sheet with no real scares, and positives across the pitch. Its the first game of a major tournament, its not always going to be straight forward. But a wins a win with a good performance, first half a good offensive display, second half a good defensive display. Yet the media is upset because it wasn't 4-0. You'll probably find the best teams in international tournaments generally grow as the it progresses. A win is a win take the positives and move on! If we win the euros with a defensive 1-0 win in the final I guarantee our media would be upset about it!
I must have watched another match! It was lucky (to England) that Serbia did not score in the second half! The thing is Soft-Gate always setup his England teams like that!
It was a GOOD performance, but it wasn't vintage. We still need to see more to make a conclusion, but the most important thing for now is to get the job done. Bellingham the difference maker again, guy just oozes class, for his age very impressive

It was a workmanlike performance, no frills whatsoever, apart from Jude and Bowen. Probably needed that for a strong organised Serbia team. Problem with England, is that we feel to reserved and don’t risk it at this level. Trust your ability and go for it. Other ‘big’ teams do, and that reflects in the quality of goals they score.

It's not about walking over them. It's about the level of control. England made Serbia look like Man City at the end. Hanging on for the win. Luckily Serbia don't have a real attacking threat. But if they play like that against a good team, they'll leak goals. To compare a similar game the Netherlands after they got the winner didn't look in trouble at all. They controlled the game.

Southgate is not the coach who will get the best out of players. He does not even know who to use and how to use these players. Why Palmar never came in the second half, sitting back and sending long balls to Harry Kane who cannot run behind defenders. Why not bring Toney or Watkins for last 15-20 mins?

Should have started or brought Gordon on, so we can have an attacking outlet off the left and Trent can find Gordon with his long balls

I'm a Liverpool fan. I've been calling for him to go for 3 years. Way too slow, and has no positional intelligence. Especially at RB. Rice was alone in the MF. The reason why Serbia cut through us so easily in the second half. I don't want Trent to start again in this tournament.

I am a Liverpool fan. For nearly 40 years. I've also coached football. He can't defend either. A very vital trait to have in the MF. He won't start against Denmark. If he does. Southgate is far worse than everyone predicted.

The media and public never says anything bad about Kane or foden.. Fary kept asking questions about Trent so as to put in the minds of the puppets that he was not good, over and over Rio answered the same question about Trent talking about it not being his normal position - it was the most blatant piece of crowd persuasion that I have seen Gary do. Made me sick. Trent played very well done with some mistakes, Foden was the worst player on the pitch by far - Gareth has been forced to play him because according to the fans and the public he is the next player on the pitch - Kane was told to stay up top and he listened to this instruction about twice in the whole game. It was like he can do whatever he wants without criticism.
They can try and spin it however they want, but Southgate is single handedly dragging this incredibly talented team down to his level.

I agree his player selection for the last shootout was way off but even then the best player can miss a penalty on any day especially a deciding one for the Euro. Other than that we played good against Italy in the final I remember it like it was yesterday. And pickford was a fucking legend that day too!

Just because the FA have a terrible record with picking managers, which makes Southgate's record look good by comparison, doesn't mean he's good. It’s the first game and they got 3 points but what’s the point of TAA in midfield if you’re not going to play attacking football. Need players like Bowen, Gordon, Watkins/Toney to ping balls to. Same thing with Kane constantly dropping deep. Make the subs to release pressure unless that was the test for the defence. Foden needs to be benched until Southgate leaves or figures out a way to play him. Give the minutes to Wharton, Gordon, Palmer…. Only Guéhi, Rice, Bellingham and Saka understood the assignment.
Just watched the belgian game, every team in this competition is competing to win each game, no matter who the manager, we aren't gonna blow past teams 3-0 every game, ultimately the win and clean sheet are the most important thing. A lot of it is down to English media and fans expectation as well. If Gareth Southgate does manage to bring a trophy back to England, not one of his critics will praise him.
I've read some really negative comments regarding England's performance. My personal view is that I genuinely thought that Serbia would be our toughest game. They have the height advantage and they can definitely bully a game. A typical Balkan national side, in that, if they can press with that bullying elemant, then they will. That's no disrespect to them. I do think that we will improve against Denmark and Slovenia. I'd have taken Foden off and replaced him with Gordon, someone who could have fed Kane. Anyway, top of the group and hopefully we can thrive moving forward!
Win is a win. When we come up against Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal or Croatia we'll get beat. Southgate scores a goal and sits back and that'll be our downfall against a hetter team.
That is the truth. You do not see teams like Germany and Spain throttle back after one goal.

The fundamental issue is, he plays not to lose, rather than plays to win a football match.
Playing two holding defensive midfielders is ridiculous.
His tactics and the way he sets the team up does not play to our strengths and the result is, a performance like this.
@@andrewwright4195 I mean it's a cup competition so unlikely teams can win. Wigan won the FA cup remember. That Portugal team was probably much worse than what they had the last 4 years. But it's less likely. Usually the teams that play dominant and controlling attacking football, win the comps.

3 pts and a clean sheet, but a post-match interview should question how and why we relinquished control when we were so on top in the first half. Not a great tactic to put the player on the back foot by suggesting it was an "ugly win". But some sort of explanation we can certainly ask for. Onwards and upwards.

???? What?? I'm happy with the win and happy with most players but Trent is the only concern. He's not a midfielder. He showed quality at time but we know he's got quality. What we're not sure about is his composure in the tight spaces of midfield and he gave the ball away numerous times. When he came off we were more comfortable in midfield. If that was a top team we would've been picked apart and Trents mistakes would have been punished.

Bellingham is great, and I loved the way he played hard, not just smart. But Southgate, he has to go, I think. England won't get far playing such defensive football. They were lucky to get away with a 1-0 win. How many times has Southgate defended 1-0 for 60 or 70 or 80 mins? You just cannot play like that and win trophies. Look at other teams and look at past winners. They don't do it because it doesn't work. Fabregas talked the most sense about this issue.
