Operation of the DMA controller is understood. But the basic question is missed during the whole explanation....that is *how the DMA controller is going to be useful...?* My question is: if we are doing multiple steps to store data directly to the memory from IO devices using DMA and CPU too, how did DMA save time and load of CPU??

Without DMA controller, I'm pretty sure CPU who was doing all the work of copying data from I/O and transfer, having to stop doing other processes it could otherwise do instead of wasting cpu time. With DMA controller, the CPU is just required for interrupts and is not held for a long time, so it can do more work elsewhere in the system. General reason: In the case you have a slow I/O data transfer, It saves the CPU from doing "useless work".

I have one doubt . You said that I/O to cpu and cpu to memory it consumes two cycles so that's why we using dma right? . But know I/o to dma and dma to cpu and dma to memory transferring it wont consumes more cycles of data . Thanks
