ah awesome thank you for this! so a question then: if you chop off the horizontal branches, so only the stem is left, that would make the tree non-climable? or do you assume that since those horizontal branches could grow back, that the tree can never been considered compliant and only trees that will never grow 10mm horizontal branches are ok?
Yes you can. The trunk itself is not an issue, provided it is ‘clean’ of climbable branches or forks within 900mm from the top of the boundary fence, as well as any indentations or projections greater than 10mm in this zone. There is no need to cut the trees entirely, as pruning is normally appropriate. Call us for more clarity.
Are there alternatives to denuding a tree where there are footholds? Can sleeves be installed with spikes or fabrications that would prevent a foothold (or be extremely painful if the kid is that stupid)?
There is no place for climbable branches next to a pool fence. The standards cover this well and allow for a non climbable sleeve to be wrapped around a trunk if there are protrusions greater than 10mm. For good, and obvious, reasons there are no other options in the standard.
We have had a certificate of non compliance issued for several reasons and our certifier is saying we now need to upgrade our pool barrier to the latest standard. Our pool was built in 2011 was built under Sec 30C Swimming pools Act 1992. We have Red Robin Photini hedges that have grown next to the boundary their trunks are between 400 - 500mm away from the boundary. He has suggested to remove the plants but I am not convinced that there needs to be a 500m clear zone which he hast stated the suggestion for removal under the following clause "Features and Objects Near a Barrier Steps, retaining walls, objects or level changes that would otherwise reduce the height of a barrier within a property shall not be located within 500mm of the barrier. (AS 1926.1-2012 S2.3.1) My Question is can't i just cut any branches that are weight bearing say 10mm in diameter in the 900mm NCZ down from the top of the 1800H fence? Hence not having to remove the hedges? Your help would be very much appreciated!
thank you - you dont happen to know what that soft non climbable shrub is called that you show us at the beginning part of the vid? thanks
Very helpful. Thank you.
Can you explant about the clothesline? Are the strings considered climbable or just the horizontal frame?
Clothesline strings ARE considered climbable and cannot be within the no climb zone.

We only gauge what we see at the point of inspection. If there are no climbable branches at the time of inspection, then it would pass.

Thank you so much! I will give you a call this week!
As long as the tree is monitored to ensure branches do not grow greater than 10mm diameter out from the trunk there is no problem.
