These videos are amazing. I am building a computer game who's protagonist uses a wheelchair and your videos are really helping me make the animations and movement systems much more authentic. Thank you very much.
Now do one on pulling a door open and going through it without pushing off a solid wall or your wheels... Seriously. I actually use this one. Point the chair perpendicular to the door you're about to open, then grab it by the pull handle and pull it towards you. This simultaneously pulls your wheelchair back 90 degrees toward the direction of the door and you use the handle you're still holding to propel yourself through the now open door. This pretty much only works on doors I go through all the time so I can accurately estimate where my chair needs to be when I pull the door wide open, but it's quite a convenient way to get where I'm going (especially if you have to swipe a badge on the opposite side of where you would push off to open a door).
couple of last QUESTIONs? did you figure all of this out by yourself', or did you get professional help? was it hard for you to learn how to drive with hands controls? THANKs for the HELP.

Recently, the entrance door to our appartment house has been changed. The old door opened inwards, which was easier for me when going from the street and inside the house, because I just unlocked it and pushed the door wth my other hand and quickly went inside. Now they're opening outwards and I am at loss as to how to open the door from the outside. I would have to simultaneously unlock the door and pull the door toward me. I can't stand facing the door because I wouldn't be able to reach the lock. I have to stand so I have the door next to me on my right side, so when opening the door from the ouside, the door open just a little, because I'm standing next to them and I don't have enough strength to turn the wheelchair to open the door further. The new door are also quite heavy. Do you have any idea anyone? I would appreciate any help on this matter.
kampover I'm not sure about where you live but some places require handicap access. you can speak to the building manager and explain the situation. In many places it's mandatory they accommodate you. ohmyapt.apartmentratings.com/handicap-access-requirements-for-residential-buildings.html try to do some research and see where you get. I'm not too much of a help since I'm not.in a wheelchair but there needs to be a accessible entrance to my knowledge.
It's kinda funny opening doors for "bi-peds" ... they don't know what to do. On more than one occasion I've been holding the door for someone and had them take the door from me so that they could hold it open [for me]. I know people are just being nice and I can appreciate that ... I just find it funny.

you know, ive been a wheelchair user most of my life, nearly 40 years, born with spina bifida, and ive never really given much thought to how i do a lot of things, specially this kind of thing, it just comes naturally, i think im gonna have to take more notice of how i do things in future lol. but one thing i have noticed, and i think you mentioned it here, is walkers assuming you cant open doors, its always funny to see their reactions when they see you do it, particularly when you open a door for them!. And i have to be honest, i have used that attitude from them to my advantage, even though i can open doors, if they do it for you, bonus lol
and most of the time when they try and help you they get in the way and once I nearly had my shoulder ripped out of the socket when someone grabbed a door from me and I couldn't let go quick enough (that was doubly annoying as I'd not have been going through the door if the disabled rest room had been functional).
People always open double doors for me, so I usually just troll them and open the other door. I'm not paralyzed so I have control of my back muscles, therefore making it easier for me to open doors using the push method.
You make it look so easy! I'm not using my chair often at this point (I have a nervous system disorder) but there are definitely days when it helps but I avoid going places that don't have automatic or handicapped doors in the chair. I haven't had it long and am still pretty awkward in it, plus I haven't built up the arm muscles for it yet either! Thanks for sharing!
I just have started using a power wheelchair due to MS and I don't have strength in my right arm to pull but it did give me a few ideas on what to try. Going into a bathroom stall was nearly impossible! Especially without a door handle. I had to try to grab the bottom of the door and pull it closed while trying to go backwards. Ugh. I guess eventually I will get it but what a pain in the rear this is!

You’ll figure it out. You may be able to remove the closing mechanism on the door or at least adjust it so it doesn’t close as quickly. If you remove it, you could also install a small handle on the outside of the door closest to the hinge to make it easier to close behind you.
This video saved me a few weeks ago. I was in Canadian Tire and their "wheelchair accessible" bathroom had a huge heavy door with no power button. I'm not paralyzed so I could have just stood up and walked in but I wasn't feeling like it that day. Getting in and out wasn't the easiest but I did it. Love your vids!
We are remodeling with concerns for any possible future (old-age related?) mobility issues and are wondering if wheelchair users tend to prefer a bathroom with door opening into the room or out.
It is even more tricky if you have a service dog. A door that opens towards you the dog must be trained for off leash movements. You have the dog sit and stay as you go through then you hold the door open and recall the dog.
do you think the ADA door clearances are good enough, or does it feel like they're kind of the bare minimum. for example, if you had unlimited money and were building a custom home, would you spend a lot more to exceed ADA clearances because you thought it would be more comfortable?

This is what l sometimes do, too! I can go about 12 meters, then need a rest for about minimum of 3 hours. So l only go in my house.1x kitchen and back. It's so much help to be able to use the legs for some tiny but helpful things! Lst friday l stood up to grab a package of rise up in the shop. Right stood a small person. hi so im in a wheelchair with a broken pelvis/hip im finding it hard to get in and out of the appartment. to door is at the end of a hall way and has a small halway the size of the door, the door opens into the appartment where there is a small hallway. thus far i have scrapped a lot of paint. i have found that leaning foward and pulling myself though the door is the only way to get out and i always need help getting in. any suggestion on how to get through small doorways with hallways either side
I’m an architect in training and I’ve designed many doorway plans that provide ADA door maneuvering clearance dimensions. I never really understood exactly how someone in a wheelchair actually used these clearances to pull or pull a swing door open so, decided to search UA-cam as I’m studying for my registration exams to be a licensed architect and I’m so happy I found your video. Hello Brian! I'm Teresa, a senior in high school. My partner Malek and I are working on a class project to create an automatic door opener to help people with disabilities open doors in their home. We are currently working on justifying that an inability to open home doors is a legitimate problem for people with disabilities, a problem worth investing in, and we would like an expert opinion from someone who has personally experienced paralysis. Based on your experience, do you feel that many people with disabilities would benefit from an automatic door opener for their homes? Any feedback or insight about whether or not our project is legitimate/worthwhile is appreciated!
Like so many other have said, your video is so helpful and important. My hope is that one day, you will be able to change the title to, "This is how people who needed to use a wheelchair USED to open doors," because now the WORLD is more accessible for all people who live with disability. Doors like this one have all been replaced by doors more easily accessible for everyone. That's my greatest wish. I'm able to walk unassisted/unaided, but few things bother me more than not correcting something that's not that difficult to correct... Automating doors to make them more accessible and inclusive. I hope one day those manual doors are something people look at in pictures and say, "Wow! Look how people USED to have to open doors!"
The worst thing EVER is a heavy door that closes fast AND has a lock on it that you need to manually unlock before you can push the door open! In those situations you can't really use momentum :/ The neighborhood laundry facility is a nightmare (until the automatic door opener is installed!) as the door there is really heavy and literally slams shut in a second- it will hit you as you go through it to go inside the facility. Pulling it open works somewhat with that backwards momentum, though with my lose joints from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, there's a risk I'll dislocate my shoulder or other joint in my arm partially or completely... Pushing the door open to go out again means having to roll up to the door, unlock it and give it a firm push with one hand while trying to keep the wheelchair from rolling backwards with the other (can't use breaks in this situation) and then be quick with the wheelchair towards the door and use brute force to open the it enough to get out, or it will slam shut again before you manage to open it more than an inch... It's almost mission impossible, and that's from someone who can use whole body for strength and balance :S I wonder if my paraplegic friends would even manage that door... If they weren't living out of town, I'd probably let them try that door just to see if it's even possible for someone with SCI to open it. I'm in a wheelchair to relieve and prevent some pain and fatigue flares from the EDS, also to avoid falls as my legs may suddenly "disappear" under me (possible tethered cord)- door frames and walls are my best friends when walking at home lol Great video btw!
What about a door and a hump to pop over. Lots of inside to outside doors have these annoying lips. There is one heavy outward opening door in my local community centre that I've never mastered, it's really heavy, I can barely push it open anyway and the lip is too big to just hit at speed with my front castors so then I have to switch my weight back to pop my front wheels up and it all goes horribly wrong!
For once, the commercial at the beginning was actually interesting & applicable, The Handycane! I so need this~ Also, wow, he made that look so smooth, I really need to practice my wheelchair skills! I have EDS, Hypermobility & need to get around in a wheelchair when out of the house now, so thanks so much for the very helpful videos!
I really appreciate you showing the different techniques. I'm getting a wheelchair sometime today (well, it's supposedly on a delivery truck from a medical supply store) and while I've been using a walker, it's not really as effective in my situation now. Definitely going to practice moving around my apartment first though.

That last one is a good idea, I never thought about not using the handle, I have sore shoulders when I reach up, so I will try this out. Useful vid as always and good non patronising attitude :)
I just wanted to thank you. I'm temporarily in a wheel chair for a few months and I spent about ten minutes today waiting in the bathroom for someone to help me get out. I will practice. I also don't have a lot of upper body strength yet but I know it will get better. Thank you again.
Thanks for the great information! I'm an occupational therapy student, and we're currently still learning about wheelchair use and how to guide people who have only just gotten their wheelchairs and still need to get used to it, and opening/closing doors is always one of the trickier things to learn.

+Simen Lambrecht I personally think hinged doors are easier to open since I am pulling backward. I typically have to lock my brakes to open sliding doors.

What I don't like is those dirty old hand pulls is the dirt that comes off on those pulls and rubbing that door in you leg and wheelchair.

2:35 The method you're demonstrating here wouldn't really work for me, because the footplate would scratch the door, or even break it.
+Bert Visscher Sounds like your foot plate needs to be raised a little if it's often dragging on the ground.
I'm sorry I found your reply only now. My footplate is not really low, but it does stick forward and has hard and sharp edges. It's very improvised.

That last one is a good idea, I never thought about not using the handle, I have sore shoulders when I reach up, so I will try this out. Useful vid as always and good non patronising attitude :)
I just wanted to thank you. I'm temporarily in a wheel chair for a few months and I spent about ten minutes today waiting in the bathroom for someone to help me get out. I will practice. I also don't have a lot of upper body strength yet but I know it will get better. Thank you again.

Thanks for the great information! I'm an occupational therapy student, and we're currently still learning about wheelchair use and how to guide people who have only just gotten their wheelchairs and still need to get used to it, and opening/closing doors is always one of the trickier things to learn.

I sometimes have to have momentum too to open doors like that too and I’m not in a chair. Those doors can be heavy.
The most common way is to let another person hold the door for you it’s common curtesy

Is a sliding easier in a way to open or do you prefer pivoting doors?
+Simen Lambrecht I personally think hinged doors are easier to open since I am pulling backward. I typically have to lock my brakes to open sliding doors.

Hi I'm an architecture student, and am designing bathroom which needs wheelchair access. I am confused, which doors are more comfortable? Opening inwards or towards yourself? I found data on either of them. Would appreciate some candid information and not what standards say. Thanks.

Isn't it always going to be both? If it's toward you on the way in, it will be away from you on the way out.
I would install doors that swing either way. lots of places have them. then I can always push haha
