Why we have to do 7x4 even tho you can do 7x5?

He split up the shape differently, so you have to do 7x4.
7x5 is incorrect, because they are both lengths. So, you can also do 5x4=20
and then 2x6=12
20+12=32 :)
He just did it one way, there are two ways, do whatever you prefer.

After finding the area of each rectangle that we created from the shape, we add the individual areas together to get the combined area. Since the areas were 28 and 4, we added them to get an overall area of 32 inches squared.
