My uncle read Latin at Oxford and he graduated with honors and he became a very rich businessman. When I was young I asked how Latin prepared him for business and he said it taught him how to think and analyze in such a way that he demolished the competition. He was always quoting Cicero and the Aeneid and I never understood a world of it until years later. He said what he brought to the table was intelligence and drive but that Latin enriched his life in every way. He also had the most beautiful girlfriend who was with him for years and he left her millions. I miss him.
I always love when a room expresses the person living there, as with this one - when seeing it there's no doupt that here lives a person who loves books and language and that pillow with the dog is Fantastic.
I am an English Literature student in Turkey .It is really hard but if you love what you are doing ,it does not matter whether it is hard or not. Thanks to Literature I met amazing people like Shakespeare,Flaubert,Chaucer,Virginia Woolf ,Jane Austen ,Bronte sisters and many others.I love books 📚 I love my major and It is just magnificent choice for me after all!💖🌸📝
Amazing video as usual! Although I'm not planning to study Literature at university, this was still great advice and it was so interesting to hear about what you've been up to. I like independent study with a lot of things, so I will hopefully like university because of that. I agree regarding exams and English - although I've only completed my AS Level in Literature (but this week I started A2 work), I found like I much preferred doing the coursework. I could explain things, spend time researching and perfecting exactly what I wanted to say in order to provide the most interesting and original debate, whereas in the exam I found it more stressful. In other subjects where there are very specific facts, figures and statistics to remember, exams are understandable, but I'm never sure about English exams.
I unfortunately had a horrible experience at uni and didn't even last a semester, but that's because I didn't know how to handle my anxiety that suddenly flared up. especially with a theatre heavy schedule. However, hearing about your experience makes me think I could go back in the fall. Or at least start taking online classes in the fall.
'An introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory' by Andrew Bennett and Nicholas Royle may be of help but I haven't read many books specifically about literary movements.
This was a wonderfully informational and eloquent video. It has really helped calm some of my nerves about starting uni and doing an English degree, and also helped make me more excited! As with you, the thing I'm most nervous about is what the lecturers will expect of me, but watching this video has helped. Thank you! :)
I had the exact same experience of suddenly feeling "at home" on the campus of my college, and I knew that I had to apply and that I would be accepted. I used to give tours of the school for prospective students, and I used to tell every group about that feeling that I had, and that many friends and people around campus had expressed the same feeling, and that I was sure that everyone would know the school that they were meant to study at when they felt it. I'm so happy to hear that you felt it, too!
Hi there. I am currently a final year undergraduate English Literature student at my local university. Like you said, learning literature with an introduction to new reading materials (which is out of my comfort reading genres) and analysing it with contexts and literary theories truly get me into loving this course even more. :D
Lovely video as always! I can't wait to go and experience all of this! My lecturers will be sick to death of me with the amount of tutorials I am going to book now!
I've just found your UA-cam channel and it's sooo helpful because I'm starting at YSJ in September, studying English Lit as a joint honours AND I'm staying at St. John Central, this has made me feel so much more excited! However I'm terrified I'll find the course too hard :(
I'm so excited about doing English literature at university! Just really confused where to go and also a bit scared! Thanks for reassuring me my choice of course ! :)
Scarlet Rose late but do what you want, I'm sitting for uni entrance exams next month, regretting why didn't I pick history instead of physics or biology...
Hello, Can I just say thank you, I was actually torn between Philosophy and Literature as what I wanted to study. This video has made my mind up. Wow, it's the most intricate of cogs that powers the big machine eh? x
There are some people in the world that speak intelligently and you think wow that person is super smart and some people don't have to say a word you can see that person is super smart."That's you"
Sometimes I wish I'd chosen English Lit as my degree. But although I love books and love discussing them, I love reading for pleasure, and past experiences with A-Level made me associate English Lit with an absence of that pleasure. Probably highly wrong, I know. But your video brings up a sort of wistfulness in me. I won't change my degree - I'm very happy with the one I'm doing - but I do sometimes wonder 'what if?'.
What are you studying? I always wanted to do a degree in Social History and changed in my second year of A Levels. I always wonder 'what if?' too. My A Level English wasn't up to much either so I don't blame you!
ReadingBukowski Medieval & Renaissance Studies is my academic degree of choice! I changed my mind so many times over what I wanted to do, though, from Classics to Archaeology, Viking Studies to History. So indecisive of me!
Awesome video! I'm looking at studying literature at uni, I'm currently coming to the end of AS lit, which I really enjoy, I love the texts etc. The idea of uni scares me a bit, do you get a lot of help with your essays? Bc that's something I feel I would need.
kirsten wise You can book as many tutorials (one on one discussion with your lecturer) as you need to discuss your thoughts and essay plans - Tutorials are amazing!. Although they can't look, read or give any detailed feedback on your finished essay. University at first is scary but it soon becomes normal and a lot of fun! Good luck :)
I have a question, I adore reading and I love reading contemporary literature and American literature. I'm just curious to know if majoring in English Literature doesn't only depend on reading Shakespeare and Chaucer? Not that there's anything wrong with Shakespeare and Chaucer I'm just wondering if the courses heavily lay on them two?
Not at all! The emphasis on 'English literature' just means that the texts you will study will all be in English. All universities in England study one Shakespeare text because I think it is mandatory (I could be wrong). Pick a course that specialises in the type of literature you are interested in. For instance the majority of the texts I have studied have been post 1700.
Compulsory contact hours are seminars, workshops and lectures. Tutorials are voluntary (you book them yourself). A tutorial is where can have a one to one chat with a professor or a writer in residence.
So I'm a student from the Netherlands and I'm thinking about studying English Literature but I don't know wether I should go abroad or not, I love the language, country and people yet I haven't really been able to convince myself. Do you think it would be worth it?
Practice. Keep reading and try to set time limits. I use an app on my iphone but I can't remember the name of it. There are a lot of great apps out there that can help :)
I really just want enough time to read everything T^T I'm in year 11 so I've got other things to study but I really just wanna go into a library and just spend my entire life there reading books. T^T

+ReadingBukowski I'm considering changing my course from psychology to English on results day would I need a new PS?

I love this video :) - even though it made me miss university so much. I graduated in 2012, and I really miss it.

You definitely won't find it too hard! The first year is all about helping you move from Alevel to degree level :)
I'm so excited about doing English literature at university! Just really confused where to go and also a bit scared! Thanks for reassuring me my choice of course ! :)
I'll be talking more about choosing which university to go to in another video so I hope that helps :)
Thank you very much for making this video!
Oh! Such a nice video! I really loved your accent :D!!
I am planning of keeping English Literature, Psychology, Sociology and Biology in A-Levels. Is it a good combination? I LOVE these subjects
Scarlet Rose late but do what you want, I'm sitting for uni entrance exams next month, regretting why didn't I pick history instead of physics or biology...
Do you have any tips for writing a personal statement when applying for an English Lit course?

You should totally do a room tour!
+Safwana Rashid I've already done one. It's called 'Room Tour featuring my bookshelves!'. Hope you enjoy it!
