I started watching Jesus of Nazareth as a kid. I’m 44 and I cannot watch any other movie about Jesus. I actually saw it today Good Friday. It still has the same effect on me, I love Mr. Powell. By the way, it has absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Powell’s ethnicity. I believe that he’s a great actor and he did an amazing job at this portrayal.
The first time I watched Mr Powell version of Jesus of Nazareth was Easter 2020, and I watched it again Easter Sunday-Monday 2021. Excellent actor, this is the role of his career.

It was the role of a lifetime for Powell and he was so convincing and believable! I think he also must have done much to promote the Gospel throughout the world due to his fine acting. Similarly, Alistair Sim playing Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol". No other actor is worth watching in that role for me.

He was my first crush 😍 those eyes and his portrayal of Jesus has stuck with me .I watch it quite a lot and although I'm 57 now it still touches me and brings me to tears. @@mrv1271 Yes, Franco Zeffirelli was the perfect Director for this drama series. I agree. I still believe a lot of the success of theatre hangs on the talents and skillsets of the Actors. The Director can be the best, but it is the talented Actors that bring the realistic characters to life and make the film believable. I cannot even imagine Jesus of Nazareth without Robert Powell. I view this brilliant series at least 2-3 times per year. It truly brings me closer to Christ. Happy viewing. 🌹
Jesus of Nazareth is my favorite religious movie. Powell is so believable as Jesus. He said that he never blinked while playing Jesus bc the director wanted Jesus to seem like someone not of this world. You'll notice that he never blinks.

Mr. Powell is a great actor. He wont play a part unless he believes in it. Or has deep connection to it. He was young at the time....but open to different experiences. If you listen to this interview and interviews now that you can find on UA-cam...he basically has not changed. He is very serious about all parts he plays. He is a serious actor. It's not about glamour to him. How refreshing. It's about the craft that he loves. Lucky him. He is also the voice of many documentaries...etc. A great ambassador to what an actor should be.
Apparently David Hemmings suggested him for the role of Gregory Wolf in Harlequin,which I have always loved.But like many people my first Robert Powell experience was seeing his as Jesus Of Nazareth in Bollin Cross School in the late 7Os.I also believe he narrated an audiobook version of Dracula for the BBC.I would love to hear this.

As a matter of fact, not too long ago, I don't remember when this Happened, Powell got furious because since his performance as Christ created a phenomena, on T-shirts, paintings and people are warped thinking he is Jesus. He made it plain. "I'm not Jesus Christ! I'm just an actor.". So, again I respect the man's privacy and he's doing well and still acting in England.

The best thing about him is his humility. He isn’t there all pompous saying he played Jesus, and it showed in his acting. That is what made it so believable. He was a quiet, humble servant.

I'm 47 and I saw Jesus of Nazareth like almost every year at Easter when I was very young. I remember once when I was 12 or 13, I was watching it again and I cried my eyes out, and prayed that I love you Jesus and I didn't want to go to hell. There was never a time I ever disbelieved God but I feel like that particular moment was a pivotal one in my life, and no other film moved me in that way, except Gibson's Passion of the Christ.
Years ago when I was a little girl in the 60's I thought no one else could do a better job in protraying Jesus then Jeffrey Hunter. In 1977 I saw a performance of Jesus that for my part is The Best Performance of Christ. That of course is Mr. Powell's interpretation of my Eternal God, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is without question how most everyone feels Jesus would be like if you're blessed to stand in his physical presence.
He played Jesus because he believes in him and I believe with all my heart that he means that. My question is does he also believe that Jesus died for him and rose again on his and our behalf so we can be with him in heaven? I hope and pray he does.🙏

I started watching Jesus of Nazareth as a kid. I’m 44 and I cannot watch any other movie about Jesus. I actually saw it today Good Friday. It still has the same effect on me, I love Mr. Powell.
By the way, it has absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Powell’s ethnicity. I believe that he’s a great actor and he did an amazing job at this portrayal.
The first time I watched Mr Powell version of Jesus of Nazareth was Easter 2020, and I watched it again Easter Sunday-Monday 2021. Excellent actor, this is the role of his career.

He was my first crush 😍 those eyes and his portrayal of Jesus has stuck with me .I watch it quite a lot and although I'm 57 now it still touches me and brings me to tears. The Director can be the best, but it is the talented Actors that bring the realistic characters to life and make the film believable. I cannot even imagine Jesus of Nazareth without Robert Powell. Jesus of Nazareth is my favorite religious movie. Powell is so believable as Jesus. He said that he never blinked while playing Jesus bc the director wanted Jesus to seem like someone not of this world. You'll notice that he never blinks.

Mr. Powell is a great actor. He wont play a part unless he believes in it. Or has deep connection to it. He was young at the time....but open to different experiences. If you listen to this interview and interviews now that you can find on UA-cam...he basically has not changed. He is very serious about all parts he plays. He is a serious actor. It's not about glamour to him. How refreshing. It's about the craft that he loves. Lucky him. He is also the voice of many documentaries...etc. A great ambassador to what an actor should be.
Apparently David Hemmings suggested him for the role of Gregory Wolf in Harlequin,which I have always loved.But like many people my first Robert Powell experience was seeing his as Jesus Of Nazareth in Bollin Cross School in the late 7Os.I also believe he narrated an audiobook version of Dracula for the BBC.I would love to hear this.

This interview really highlights how much work Robert poured into the role, because his natural mannerisms and manner of speech are markedly different from the ones he adopted as Jesus. He didn't just read from a script, he carefully adjusted everything about himself, right down to the tiniest detail. The interview being so near to the time of filming makes the comparison easy.

Robert had the perfect voice for the part of Jesus and his eyes were so expressive they conveyed the holiness within him of God so well...a moving film and my favourite portrayal of Jesus...youre a star in many ways especially in that film.
He narrates a few WWII documentaries that I regularly watch. His voice is so smooth and comforting.

So glad to read that he has become a believer in JESUS and the truth that JESUS Is Our LORD and SAVIOR. I’ve often wondered what his beliefs are after portraying JESUS. It was a brilliant performance and now I feel better knowing that he is a believer.

I loved that movie, even agree watching it every year for many years! I saw him last year doing a documentary on Israel and the places Jesus went. It was very interesting!

Seen several Jesus films. Many good actors but Robert Powell to my eyes seemed much more able to project a spiritual soul that must have been present in the actual person

I don't know about that but Hollywood came knocking on his door but Robert Powell backed off. He's really anti-Hollywood. That's why he acted in his own native country in England. So, I respect the man's privacy after he played the role of Christ.

As a matter of fact, not too long ago, I don't remember when this Happened, Powell got furious because since his performance as Christ created a phenomena, on T-shirts, paintings and people are warped thinking he is Jesus. He made it plain. "I'm not Jesus Christ! I'm just an actor.". So, again I respect the man's privacy and he's doing well and still acting in England.

It was a television miniseries, so it would not have been eligible for the Academy Awards. Maybe for the TV awards.

What a lovely man. He looks so 70s with his kind of afro hair, haha, I love it. Totally different from when he played Jesus. I found it really adorable when he kind of covered his face in embarrassment when the interviewer asked the questions about his female audience. Also, yes, a stunning voice.

The best thing about him is his humility. He isn’t there all pompous saying he played Jesus, and it showed in his acting. That is what made it so believable. He was a quiet, humble servant.
Just watching the film taught me a lot about the scriptures. This is the best movie telling the life of Jesus.
Jesus Christ is the most difficult role for an actor to play. I think of all the portrayals of Jesus his interpretation came to the most perfect one I had seen, and my favorite one.

I'm 47 and I saw Jesus of Nazareth like almost every year at Easter when I was very young. I remember once when I was 12 or 13, I was watching it again and I cried my eyes out, and prayed that I love you Jesus and I didn't want to go to hell. There was never a time I ever disbelieved God but I feel like that particular moment was a pivotal one in my life, and no other film moved me in that way, except Gibson's Passion of the Christ.
Years ago when I was a little girl in the 60's I thought no one else could do a better job in protraying Jesus then Jeffrey Hunter. In 1977 I saw a performance of Jesus that for my part is The Best Performance of Christ. That of course is Mr. Powell's interpretation of my Eternal God, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is without question how most everyone feels Jesus would be like if you're blessed to stand in his physical presence.

As a Christian woman, I'm surprised he said that, I mean, he portrayed Jesus, how could he NOT believe Jesus died for our sins, then risen 3 days later, so we may have everlasting life in heaven if we are saved by grace thru faith, believing Jesus is the son of God! I pray for Roberts salvation & for all who are not saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. For the wages of sin is death, meaning eternity in Hell
Judging from his response in this interview he does not believe in Jesus. He believes in the man but is unsure of his deity. That seals it right there. Hopefully things have changed since this interview he has found the truth.

A versatile actor, indeed, though his career was not as grandiose as one might have expected. The fact, that R. Powell played, a private detective (S. Holmes), a composer (G. Mahler) and of course the main role in the masterpiece "Jesus of Nazareth", is undoubtedly, amazing.
And don't forget Shaka Zulu miniseries... plays the Irish doctor... Who is also the narrator..
