    OHMYGOD HEY!
This week I was lucky enough to be invited to a gala performance for the new cast of MOULIN ROUGE the Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End.
The new cast features Jamie Muscato (Heathers, Dogfight) as Christian, Melissa James (Gypsy) as Satine, Matt Rixon (Hairpsray) as Harold Zidler and Ben Richard (9 to 5, The Bodyguard) as the Duke.
Check out today's new video for my thoughts on the new cast members and find out whether this changed my overall opinon of the show...

Jamie Muscato is brilliant. I love the new cast. It's great that some covers were promoted at cast change too, I love when shows do that. Amy Thornton is a SUPERSTAR, and that's all I have to say!
Edit: I was lucky enough to see Zoe play Satine 3 times and I can confirm she was fantastic. I'm interested to hear what you think of the Can Can seats. Most times I've seen the show it's been from the standing area in the circle and I've still LOVED it. I've always thought why pay £100+ when you can pay £15?

Funny how Jamie played the Ewan McGregor part in big fish on stage and now he's playing his moulin rouge role on stage too!!!!! Having seen McGregor in guys and dolls, they are quite similarly vocally. I absolutely love Jamie, seen him in big fish, knew then he'd be an absolute star!!!!!

Jamie Mascato was absolutely amazing!! Went twice. We all definitely want Jamie's growl and I cried and cried at the end
His voice is gorgeous. Met him twice at Stage Door and he's so lovely. I agree with everything you said. The chemisty was brilliant.

We were very fortunate to see Moulin Rouge on Broadway last year. The show is spectacular. The environment, the lightening, the movement, the dancing, the singing, the ensemble. Spectacular. With this as the baseline, the pressure on the principles is immense. In New York, the principles took it to levels higher than anyone can imagine or expect, elevating the production to even higher heights. The most incredible performances I have ever seen or heard on stage. I am so pleased that the West End production is now able to enjoy the quality of performance the show needs and deserves.

I felt so lucky I was able to see Moulin Rouge with the new West End cast during my stay in London. Jamie Muscato is an absolute star in this show. He delivers every single vocal moment so well and it feels like it's a role really suited to him, like he's able to transition seamlessly from the boyish, sort of naive Christian from the first act to the more enraged/troubled Christian from the second act. An absolute standout. Also really liked Melissa James playing this role. I felt a bit iffy with her rendition of Sparkling Diamond, exactly like you. It feels a bit uncomfortable for her register, but then it gets so much better. She has some powerful vocals and acts spot on through the more dramatic bits. It was a really amazing experience over all.

Saw this on Thursday which was my first time seeing the show, and wow I was blown away. Jamie Muscato was absolutely incredible, his voice and acting was on point. Hope to see him in this again soon! Melissa also did an amazing job, and loved the way she played out the illness over time

I had the same problem with the original 2 leads, as I felt nothing for their plight. But the main problem I was having was a party of 4 women singing in the next seats to me during the show. So after your review I will have to go again and hopefully enjoy it more.

There are 76 song credits in the program. I described it as a riffsicle: the crowd reacts to the first chord as if its a rock show, and the reaction fizzles out after that. I wanted to love it, but it kept throwing me out.

I was so lucky to have seen Zoe Birkett in a matinee performance early October 2022..
Sorry to say Mickey, you ought to be devastated not seeing her as Satine.. She was outstanding!!.
She filled in for Alexander Burke on the first tour of The Bodyguard.. Alexander was ill the night I went and was a little disappointed. But Zoe killed the role as her stand in, again, this was a good few years ago..
When I seen her name on the cast board for my performance of Moulin Rouge, I knew I was going to have a great afternoon.. She killed it!!
    Her vocals are amazing.

On understudies- saw the new cast last week and we had Melissa Nettleford on as u/s Satine (not sure if she also understudied the role in the previous cast too?). I thought she was fantastic, felt she grew in confidence during diamonds (though probably didn't help that we had a show stop just before Satine's entrance) and really enjoyed her portrayal on the whole. Jamie Muscato was amazing, from the boyish Christian in act 1 to slightly manic in act 2, and the vocals were so good. Backstage Romance definitely a highlight for me too, a really thrilling spectacle! Looks like an absolute workout too, big credit to the company on that one 😅 👏

I missed Hindi Sad Diamond. Maybe it would have been boring to get the same thing from the movie to the stage, but that is the most lavish staging in the entire movie, and it would have been cool to witness that moment in person

I have seen the show 3 times now - the OBC, the OLC and also the replacement London cast.
I totally agree that Jamie Bogyo was miscast in the OLC, however, Liisi La Fontaine is my favourite Satine (followed very closely by Karen Olivo). Liisi was everything when I saw it but she wasn’t matched by Jamie B. Unfortunately, when I saw the replacement cast, I felt that Jamie Muscato was giving everything but wasn’t matched by Melissa James. I would love to see Jamie Muscato and Liisi do the show together, I think that would be magic.

I went to see Moulin Rouge last night and had a similar reaction. You can't not absolutely love your time there, it's too spectacular!! Jamie is obviously incredible, nothing more to add (GROWL)
I saw Vanessa Ela Young as Satine - who I loved in Diamonds are Forever/a Girl's Best Friend but I felt lost it for the rest of Act 1. I sort of hated Firework in this show...she went a bit nasal at times and I didn't think maintained the 'sparkling diamond' image so I didn't believe that she was the one person who could keep the Moulin Rouge going for Zidler, or that Christian and the Duke would be so obsessed with her. BUT I felt like she absolutely SNATCHED it back for Act 2.
Ian Carlyle was magnificent as Toulouse - although I don't really understand the development of his character in the musical production. It makes no sense and I don't think it adds anything - he doesn't need to have this sad love story. I wish they'd kept him as a more comedic element who could still offer sage advice.
I saw Jon Tsouras as the walking cover for Santiago who was great - he's so impactful early on and obviously a huge part of the Backstage Romance, I was kind of surprised to see that more wasn't done with this character tbh.
I so agree that the Jukebox element got a bit out of hand and felt like they were doing it for a gimmick sometimes. And I'm SO glad you expanded on Baby Doll's character here, the implied trans-ness combined with some lines that made it feel more like a character in drag made it feel a bit uncomfortable and like they were unsure what they were even going for, especially when casting a cis man.

We saw the North American touring cast of Moulin Rouge, and every performer was amazing in their role. Especially Conor Ryan as Christian, who has sadly moved on from the role after his initial year. My biggest critique of the show is similar to your point about adding bits of songs as punchlines. For all of the revisions they made to adapt the show to the stage, my biggest critique is that much of the wild zany mood is gone, replaced with a dire seriousness, where almost all of the 'jokes' come from breaking into unexpected songs - which aren't *actually* funny, but do still seem to garner reliable audience chuckles. Turning Christian into a crazed near-murderer was also not my favorite choice.

Had an opportunity to see Moulin Rouge on Broadway over the Xmas holidays. The empathy for the leads was not as impactful as it should have been. The opening was a wow, but the biggest issue was that the sound was way too loud. My wife and several other theater goers had to plug their ears multiple times. As a reference we were midway back in the Orchestra / Stall. The sets and choreography were indeed amazing.
Another issue is that while the pop songs fit in with the story line, other than the impactful Lady Marmalade opening the remainder are not that memorable. As MickeyJo suggested back in one of his many Cinderella videos, there is an overreliance on pop scores in musical theatre today. Yes, I understand it's also that way in the movie. He said at the time, "... but that's a topic for another discussion." I wish you'd have it.

Interesting.I think I need to see Jamie Muscato in something else because it sounds like he has really progressed as a performer. I low-key want to see this show because the movie is one of my favourite films ever. I was the same. Moulin rouge is one of my forever favourite movies. Saw it in the cinema when it released, listened to the soundtrack all the time.
So at one point I listened to the cast album of the musical, as I was so hyped for seeing it.... waiting for it coming to Europe :D and wow what a disappointment that was for me.
But well.. went to London to see it in Dezember... not even 4 month ago...
