Hey Tony, you are a smart guy so I'm sure you will figure this out on your own but if that MAF sensor works the same as the ones Toyota used back in the day it and the air box is crucial to the car running right. The MAF in older toyota's was kind of like a variable resistor for the fuel pump. The more air flow you have the more the flap is open which means more voltage to the fuel pump. This might sound crazy but I would try putting the air ducting back in the air box and see if it cleans up at lower RPM's. A quick and dirty test for this is to force the MAF open and closed with your fingers or a screw driver while the engine is running. If it runs better with the flap on the MAF opened just a little more you know you don't have enough airflow/turbulent air, possibly a vacuum leak or you truly do have a fuel pressure/fuel flow issue. Good luck and thanks for the awesome content.
Most E30 gauge clusters suffer from odometer gear failure, among several other issues (batteries on SI board, SI board failure, burnt traces on main board, etc). Your cluster is from a 325e car based on that 5k tach (M20b25 E30s like yours would have a 7k tach). They could've just swapped the tach into the original cluster from your car, but most of the time a whole cluster was swapped with whatever was available at the time because the SI board fails and causing no tach and other issues, aka that mileage is probably just whatever the replacement cluster had on it, not the actual mileage on the car (not that it matters because M20s run forever). I'd toss a timing belt on it stat, as the service interval on them is 4yrs/60k miles, and they will fail. When you do the timing belt it's also wise to do the water pump/tensioner/cam seal and cam seal oring, front main if you're feelin frisky. Also that velocity stack in the airbox works quite well, would definitely put that back. The OG head bolts on these engines had a hex head and the bolt heads would fail and pop off. BMW revised them and they're an inverted torque style now. I've had one of those hex heads fail and let just enough combustion into the cooling system to cause the "leak from the next weakest spot" that you seem to be dealing with. You have to pull the VC anyway to lash valves, so it's worth having a look. Also also, the go to E30 muffler is a Magnaflow 14815 for nice rear valence fitment and good sound. If you just want to put a muffler on it for sound and keep the rest of the exhaust stock since it looks decent, the 14815 is definitely the move.
dude, my wife loves me and 100% supports my crazy dreams that i chase and i see it in her eyes when she looks at me. Mrs "we're gonna lose the shop" looks at you the same way bro, very cool. congrats on an incredible life you've built by having fun. happy thanksgiving
Fantastic video, Tony. As a 1993 Volvo 240 Sedan owner, i really appreciate all the work you and your team put into restoring this BMW classic. Keep up your labor of love. Shout out from NYC.
Man, back in the day my dad bought a brand new 1994 E34 525i 5 speed manual and I LOVED that car. I drove it to school one day when I was 14 and the clutch went out on it on my way home. My dad was SO pissed for the next few weeks, but the mechanic said that it was just shot and the material was gone from the disc. He said that it was nothing that I did, it was just time to be replaced. Anyway, I'm 41 now and I own an E82 135i with the N54 twin turbo 3.0L I-6 with the DSC auto trans and it's a beast with a full AFE cold air intake, Magnaflow exhaust (sounds like crap), stainless turbo manifolds and downpipes, and a tune, but I'm hoping to eventually replace the overpriced Magnaflow exhaust. I don't want it to be yet another racecar, but 400 whp is PLENTY in this tiny coupe.
Fantastic cars, I've had about 6, current 318is for over 10 years. A couple tips, do the timing belt if its an unknown item as they can be fragile especially after sitting, and a valve adjustment might quieten down the sewing machine. The frame rails often don't like having hoist pads under them, on the seams where the little notch is located is the right jacking point. And the centre driveshaft bearings are meant to be preloaded a little bit i.e. slid forward before tightening down, makes them last longer and drive smoother. Great pick up though, looks in really good shape and will be super rewarding as a regular driver. They are my favourite cars and 70s-80s BMW they were at the top of the game IMO.
Had an e39 5 series with the 2.5 6 in it and I LOVED it. Plenty of power and torque, so comfortable and still cut a dash in traffic. Before that i had driven your usual uk based fwd dross, so this, with a silky 6, 5 speed auto and rear drive was a revelation ❤ The night drive reminded me of taking my wifes crossfire to work in winter. 6am, roof down in the snow and drifting each corner was the order of the drive. Awesome 👌
hell yes what a treat just got home from mom and dad‘s place. I drove our 1971 Chrysler imperial that I rebuilt the 440 on I bought this thing about two years ago with 30,000 miles on it. Someone had parked it in 1991 because the timing chain gear stripped and bent some push rods. What a fun car.🍕
Great car. Mine is an 88 convertible with a 2.8 stroker and 5 speed. Had it 16 years now and every time I think it’s time to sell I take it for a drive and come home smiling and think I may just have to keep it forever.
My 16 yr old wants one of these (or a Miata, FD, etc) and recently came across an 89 or 90 325ix at a customers house. She was thinking of donating it. It's pretty rusty and worn out, so I don't plan to go after it, but anyway...good luck with this next chapter of your life 😊
Tony, you might know this channel, but if you want the best BMW mechanic content on UA-cam, check out M539 Restorations. He's worked on so many iconic BMWs from their golden era, but his E30 series is pretty applicable here. Fantastic work, almost like an instructional video guide but still very entertaining. Can't recommend him enough.
Lol just get more 😂, my neighbors give me grief for having so many cars. I have 4 cars and 4 bikes but I always plan to get more. Now I know I’m not alone 🤘🏻.
I would try it with the baffle installed in the air box. It may be there as an air straightener to maintain air flow sensor accuracy, especially at low air flows.
I used to own a sweet little '98 323is e36. Such a fun car with the 5 speed. Wish I'd never sold it. At 120k miles that little 2.5l straight six was just so smooth, and the sound it made at high rpm was just awesome.
Was there a betting pool for Stone's beard catching on fire from MIG sparks? Hydrophobic doesn't mean we're afraid of water, it means WATERS AFRAID OF US!!!
Drive shaft Mercedes uses the same type of set up. Given the U joint in the center does not flex much, it will develop play because the needle bearings are mostly running in the same place. If the motor or transmission mounts are changed due to wear, this changes transmission output height / drive shaft angle. The needles will now ride in and out of the grooves causing a vibration.
I had my first experience with an E30 last year, autocrossing a friend's 325is after I broke my Miata. I don't know what it was about that car, but it made me feel totally inept, and I remember pulling into the paddock and describing driving it using a quote I heard attributed to you, Tony, by Jarod Deanda, saying "I was swatting bees in there."
Platinum BG 44K is the best fuel additive you can get. It actually works really well. Will free up sticky injectors. That tailshaft was probably just not lined up properly at the slip.
Love it - for trim black give it the pizza toast in the oven to warm up before paint and it always lays down much better here in PA. You have created my car sandwich - BMW around my BMW years (320I and 538(slowest car in the world but the best handling)), VW years and then e46 and e90 n55 (killer engine) - thanks
Looking forward to seeing this car again in the future! E30's were pretty epic and reasonably cheap scores in the late 90's to early 00's when they were everywhere and hardly anyone cared. We sure cared! I rarely regret selling things and moving on but I've been regrettimg flipping an '89 325i manual for 20 years
Live this video! Jusy a few things from someone who loves these cars. Timing belt change should be high priority, they are a service item and are known to fail not long after thebservice interval. Valves high-fiving the pistons is not an enjoyable experience. At this age, all of the AFMs are worn out and cause all sorts of odd idle/throttle issues. There arent nee ones available, but Tom Panzerella at Panzer Performance can rebuild and digitize them. They replace the circuit board completely and supply you with a more modern one that will not fail. These are pretty much standard on a lot of Spec E30 racecars now. If you dont lile the "high center" brake light on the trunk you can delete it and plug the holes, or try to find a coupe/sedan trunk in the same color. If your car is Bronzit this shouldn't be too difficult. If the car is Cashmere you might struggle to find a clean one. E30s are great cars glad to see one on the channel 🤟

One of my favorite cars was my 1987 BMW 535I with a 5 speed. I owned it in about 1995. I thought I stole it from the dealer for $4700 but it had a no start gremlin I couldn't find so I put full coverage on it and stole it from myself. They gave me $6200 bought a '76 Cosworth Vega and an '84 Dodge Conquest with that money.
tony: "when i want to get around i drive a cummins ram or a toyota." me, at home with a cummins swapped toyota: "yep, this thing is completely practical!"
Hope the stay tuned family had a wonderful Thankgiving. Another good show from you guys I like that you guys work on all makes of cars very entertaining.
80s car where the best !! my first car legal for the road was a 1980 mercury bobcat paid $200 for it in 1992 and cost me $60 to put all new brakes on it ! put a holly 350 , header with cherry bomb , locked the axle then put svo mustang 16 inch wheels ($50 for all 4 with tires) from the junk yard . had so much fun with it even raced it at riverside park speedway in the enduros in 1996
Make sure to replace the underhood fuel lines, more than common place for a fire on these cars along with the cold start injector leaking. Love it so far, H&R sport springs would go a long way on it. Also if that lock strip fades again, you can still buy them new.
To me, this was BMW's heyday before they lost their mind and started increasing the complexity of their cars for planned obsolescence and greater part replacement due to increased complexity. This might seem like common sense which is generally uncommon but more complicated machines fail more resulting in higher cost to the consumer and greater profit for manufacturers because you end up buying the car 'twice'. Companies like BMW straddle the fence between greater profit through more complicated cars versus creating cars that cost you a second mortgage out of warranty and why they have such dismal resale. I owned a 1990 BMW 735il I bought from an engineering colleague at work which had the 3.5 liter big brother of the I-6 known as the M30 Big Six motor and when I pulled the cylinder head off with 148K miles on it, it had all the cylinder cross-hatching...running on dino oil its whole life. Most of these need a driveshaft or center bearing at 150K miles or so. They are generally pretty bulletproof. I owned one more BMW in 2003, a 330ci M46 coupe which was reliable as well but would never own a late model BMW as they are designed to fail prematurely with plastic oil housing, intake manifold, trans oil pan and cooling system. Never again.
I’ve got an 89 325ix I’ve been working on slowly. It’s turbocharged on megasquirt. That’s an mtechII wheel and it’s worth some $$. Probably THE most out on wheel on e30s.
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving…thanks for all the great content. I wish you and yours all the best for the Holidays and Health and Happiness in the New Year!
I think he put so much sealant on it because he knew how many different things you were going to bounce that flange off of as you were pushing it up to the exhaust manifold like you did lol

I built the better half a little drift car a couple years ago. She loves verts. Absolutely LOVES them. So i found her a '98 328ci with a blown up engine. I dropped in a 550hp blue print 347 stroker, tkx with a quick time bell, a clutch masters twin disc, and a spool out back with a 3.73 fdr. She made 488 wheel, after ripping the convertible top and factory seats out, all the motors and actuators, converted to manual windows and gutted the doors, every single inch of factory wiring, a/c delete but i left the heater, then the cage the car weighs 2720 grid ready with her sexy ass behind the wheel. Solid little ripper and I mean SOLID. I'm talking you can clutch her into drift in 4th gear no drama. She wants a mustang after she drove my 666whp sn95 (see my profile pic) but, 100% we will be hanging onto the car. Convertible drift cars are so, SO much fun and because im 6'6 265 lbs, we can run the same seat no headroom issues. I wrapped it this straight up bass boat sparkle purple and it sits on some black chrome Johnnies with gold lug nuts. Looks super sick actually. You seem to have a really good lady, Ton. She seems sweet, great attitude, nice smile. Treat her right brother. Good girls aren't easy to find.
Have you coated your car with AvalonKing if so what was your experience? Answer below, best comment wins a $200 mystery gift!
Been using AvalonKing Armorshield Lite since before they got well known. It kinda smells like Drakar Noire mixed with hint of pear and baby wipes lol.
I regret using AvalonKing. I can't keep the panties from flying at my truck! Bed is nearly full, and picking them off every day really gets old!
I want Casey Putch to finish the Avalon King Zero
No.
What's Avalon King?

You can tell that Tony did a good job especially since his lady had a big smile on her face the entire time she was driving it. Nice job guys!

It was great! We all had the day off, working on my Dad's Camaro next week.
Such classic lines, love the look!
Agreed! one of the all time great designs!
Those rims 🔥👌. Always wanted a Bimmer with those gold and polished BBS lookin rims 🤙😎
Make sure to replace the underhood fuel lines, more than common place for a fire on these cars along with the cold start injector leaking. Love it so far, H&R sport springs would go a long way on it.
Also if that lock strip fades again, you can still buy them new.
Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely keep that in mind!
She's a keeper,Tony!
One of my favourite UA-cam channels 🏴 🍻 🍕
Looking good 🎉 like the variety of different cars 🚙
I’ve got an 89 325ix I’ve been working on slowly. It’s turbocharged on megasquirt. That’s an mtechII wheel and it’s worth some $$. Probably THE most out on wheel on e30s.
Awesome.
Thanks for the video.
Sharp ride for the lady. Happy Thanksgiving to your and family. I enjoy watching your shows.
Push it. Push it. Push it forward back.
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving…thanks for all the great content. I wish you and yours all the best for the Holidays and Health and Happiness in the New Year!
Same to you! Thanks for watching!
Well I just wanted to point out Tony is now in the original 90210 show with the cars he has. Vette, gf bmw, Porsche, etc lol.
Surprised she didn't eat a few bugs with the top down and that huge smile 😂
That’s awesome dude, gotta take care of mama!!
I think he put so much sealant on it because he knew how many different things you were going to bounce that flange off of as you were pushing it up to the exhaust manifold like you did lol
Your wife is awesome! My wife definitely drives faster and harder than me but I always want to get back home. Great video.
She's a keeper for sure. The car is ok too. Well done.
Tony getting thet GAACK GAAACKK after giving this to her. 😂

I love my 91 325is with 410 LSD, fun daily for sure.
38:10 there's an excellent wheel hanging tool in the trunk toolkit. it's just a big long threaded wheel nut with a bullet nose. It's fucking awesome.
Excellent job with the music in this video…. The car turned out great too! Hope you and your family had a truly Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks man! Glad you dig the tunes!
AvalonKing is sofa king awesome & so is Stay ⚡️Tuned
I'd just like to congratulate you guys for removing the exhaust in halves when you could have just removed it as a single unit and Stone could have put his safety squints away. 🙂
In hindsight....yes 😂
@@stoneharleysheetz Keep up the good work, dude. You're great on the show!
Great show guys! this one really shines. Now to get the small jobs done before the snow flies!
Thanks! Yeah it was a fun one! The parts just showed up but we have a ton to do this week!
