      Compared to like a decade ago then, there were big changes. 2006 is also quite unsafe by today's standards, evidenced by Romain's narrow escape yesterday which would most definitely have resulted in fatality just 3 years ago.

      I was sitting on a grandstand just in front of this place and it was so incredibly fast! It's like you just blink the eye and guy already trashed the car in 0.1 second! Also it was very scary.
      Replays don't convey the speed and hugeness of this crash.

    I love when Fernando mentions his mom watching tv as one of his motivations to get out of that car quickly, very wholesome. Wow such a scary accident live so glad safety is where it is today

      And because it was the start of the race and it was red flagged, he sprinted back to the pit lane, saw Prof Sid Watkins (who said that if he could run that far and know where he was, he was ok to restart), and he got in the T car ready for the race. IIRC - it was a long time ago! - he was doing really well in it (possibly even a podium) but the car broke down. It wasn't his day 🤷

    at 2:06 you can clearly see how the car is almost split in half.. Seen this crash so many times before but havent noticed it before how much worse it could have been.

      Modern cars are designed to split like that, and it more or less helps to distribute the force of the crash
      Sadly i can't say the same for Spa 2019 in F2..

      @@dexyh47 Kubica was fortunate to escape with the injuries he did get, that wreck had potential to be far more brutal. The FIA did have him sit out the following round for safety reasons, though, which resulted in the first actual race start for one Sebastian Vettel

      I'm guessing they didn't include it because of the brutality of it. Makes sense to me. You don't want to be showing new fans of the sport stuff like that. After all, Gilles Villeneuve's car went for a few rolls, too...

      Also Kubica's crash wasnt exactly a barrel roll. Yeah, he flip 1 and a half time, but it wasnt the result from a contact bewteen wheels or digging into the grass (the flip happened in the track itself instead).

    Alonso's car was totally airborne for a good 80-100 feet while being no more than 2 or 3 off the ground upside down. That split second of being upside down yet not hearing anything except air must've been incredibly unsettling.
