History of Portmore St Catherine

Located approximately 24 kilometres from Jamaica’s capital city, and situated on the south eastern coast of St. Catherine, is the largest urban community. This urban settlement is known as Portmore and is the second largest after the capital of Spanish Town. Portmore can be divided into two divisions, the plains to the north and the limestone hills of Hellshire to the south. Today, Portmore makes up the Municipality of Portmore from Passage Fort Drive to the north, to as far south as Port Henderson Road.
Portmore is one step closer to becoming Jamaica’s 15th parish. Its capital will be Portmore, which was the same model used to determine the capital for Kingston.
The dormitory community is expected to become the first to be granted parish status in Jamaica in 155 years, the last time being in 1867 when St Thomas was named a parish, absorbing the bulk of the historic parish of St David at the time
The history of Portmore is one that encompasses a rich and compelling past…A past that can be traced through different groups of people, localities and time…all of which, has made a significant impact on the area that is Portmore today.

This is a great history lesson about the development of the Portmore, but you only mention the British and Spanish people and give a brief nod to the Tainos,, but no mention of the Africans. This land would not have been developed without their labour. Please add the contributions of enslaved and free Africans. Thankyou

Lovely treatment of the history of Portmore, I had an early link with Portmore and fond memories during the late '70s, My sister Marcia purchased a home in Edgewater Portmore in the early days of its development and I made my marriage vows to my best friend Annett in December of 1979, at the Church of Reconciliation in Bridgeport, The Forum Hotel with its "Adventure Inn" night club was one of my early place of hanging out and purchased quite a few of the resident "Claudine Discotech" equipment from my good friend Patrick Barnes who operated the disco to upgrade my Resident Shalimar Disco when the hotel was eventually closed for renovations, i spent long hours fishing below the newly constructed Causeway bridge, Hillshire beach on the weekends was one of my family favorite hanging out spot, The Portmore Telephone system was one of my early responsibility with the Jamaica Telephone company as the system that was installed between Kingston and Portmore was the very first Digital Microwave Radio and transmissions system in this hemisphere called the Raytheon RDS80. Thanks for this rich history of a bustling thriving and ever-expanding city.

I had no idea portmore was so big..as a child I use to take the train from Montego Bay to Kgn every Summer....I have some more exploring to do!!

Gregory Park, Cottage Pen and Christian Pen were also some of the smaller pens.
Gregory Park was the first stop on the railway line which constructed in 1845 and was the first line opened to traffic outside Europe and North America.
The Gregory Park station was used to ship banana grown on Caymanas Estate and the smaller pens into Kingston for export. Gregory Park was also the place at which equipment, goods and material that were destined for the farms were delivered and then taken by ox drawn cart to their various destination.

thank you for explaining all this I did not know majority of it my father was one of the first persons to have bought a house in passes fort way back many years ago in front of the Cannel it was really pretty. directly in front of the canal in front of matalan where matalan used to be. and he had added on on his house it was so nice. live in the states many years now and come to realize that it was such luxury to even live by the water in the United States you have to literally be rich to live by the water wow I think we Jamaicans really don't know what we have and many people just walk away. something to ponder about

Thank you. I live in portmore in 1976 to 1985. I remember going to Independent City All Age School . Walking to the seshaving fun . I live in Waterford Westchester and I have Family that Live in Independent. I use to attend Miracle Open Bible Church with Pastor Wright was the Pastor . I had so much Fun Going to that church I can cote bible chapter we went on trips to Golden Spring to the river there went on walkerton we have Youth Fellowship every Friday The church was very thing to my age group at the time then they make the WaterFord Police Station The WaterFord Liberty There was the Bayside plaza . I was there when they Cut the Ribbon to for the Police Station Liberty anthem Post Office. I Remember the mailman ride bike cycle and they would ring to be bell on the bike and you would go get your mails. I used to love every summer they would keep fair where the Working Heart Center is now . Living in Portmore Was the best time in my life. I remember when water cut off every person in waterFord would go to Kamanas Park Park Horse Racing Track. forgive my spelling 🙏🇯🇲. I Took my Daughter to PortMore this April of 2022 and she love it . After Hurricane Gilbert had left significant damage to Jamaica in September 1988, Portmore looked virtually untouched; which is attributed to that hill which extends from Bayside to Marine Park/Braeton. It was then that the population boom occurred, as prior to that they would say, "Portmore a dump land, mi nah live ova deh." The Matalon precast house design was genius, too... From what I understand, the Portmore suburb was intended to house the workforce for Kingston.
What Portmore needs is an hospital---before dem start tink bout parish.
Absolutely correct, however there are still people who say it's gonna sink, being the fact that they were told all of Portmore was dumped, but the truth is that the majority of Portmore was already there.
@@EliteJamaica The strip of land connecting Kingston to Portmore was landfill ("dump land") in order to connect the cities via the old Causeway Bridge; but this is normal in civil engineering. Wharf is also on landfill.
Portmore is St .Catherine and will always be, regardless what they want to do. Parish my ass, they wanted to divide St. Catherine long time to facilitate Kingston and St Andrew, what kind of infrastructure does Portmore has in order to accommodate parish status? Leave my parish alone! Spain Town fi life.
For a minute 'portmore was like a suburban town..You could feel the affluence the minute you left Kingston a reach over there./Something changed in the last 20yrs though.👍

So, thank you for this information as we see that it was the JLP of 1960s under Edward Seaga as development minister with Hugh Shearer government as today we have PNP people laying claim that Portmore was started by Michael Manley. The JLP has been a visionary party in the infrastructure investment in modern Jamaica and the great and noble party of Alexander Bustamante today under the vibrant and astute leadership of Andrew Holness continues that trend of building on yhr legacies of the founding leaders of Bustamante, Sangster, Shearer and Seaga

Interesting info on my community. I have been to many of the locations and have seen the community grow over the years. Thanks for sharing the history. Fort Augusta was closed some years ago. Two Sisters Cave was also closed to the public.
