Is the Shroud of Turin Real? Here's the BEST Evidence.

- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- In this interview, I sit down with Jeremiah Johnston, renowned theologian and historian, to dive deep into the mysteries of the Shroud of Turin. Is it truly the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, or is it just a centuries-old artifact? There's been new evidence to come forth recently. But I'm not sure I'm convinced. Maybe you're not, either. So, I ask Jeremiah to provide the best evidence for (and against) the Shroud.

I don't need a physical "proof" of the resurrection God's word is enough.

I think it's legitimate. We'll know for sure when we see the risen Jesus face to face. !!!!
Let's focus on being saints in the faith, persevering until the end
What does that mean? What does it mean to be a saint in the faith? Are you suggesting we ignore the shroud because that contradicts the nebulous term of being a saint? Are you suggesting we should study the shroud with vigour because having evidence helps with persevering in the faith? Are you ignoring the video entirely and making a random statement?
I don't understand your intention of making this statement. When you tell people what you think they should be doing, how about a basic run through of your expectations? Then I won't have to add any assumptions to make sense of it. It'll make it a lot easier to tell you whether I agree or if I think you should go take a long walk on a short dock. Right now, the only assumptionless contribution I have is, 'That's nice."

@@MultiSky7 your scripture references do not make any sense to the point you're trying to make.
anyway, Jesus' body and blood are not literally the ark and the seat. the ark and the seat are symbolic of things and actually existed and have a need to be fulfilled in sacrifice.
God is not an exception to His rules, He commanded Moses to build and construct everything in a way because thats the way it is for God in heaven (Heb 8:4,5)
for Jesus to be considered the sacrifice His blood must have touched that seat, period, and i guarantee you it did.

If you listen carefully, he says that the blood marks are obviously before the resurrection took place, steeping all layers of cloth, the face image though is only superficial, and it’s not blood, (nor other known substance) that includes the beard. THAT is part of the evidence for the resurrected body, remember that the resurrected body will be in the glorified state, that means He would have had his beard again? In His glorified/resurrected body. Sounds like His body changed in the twinkling of an eye. Peace and grace to you.
Amen! What a time to live 😮
May He come soon to take His bride home!! Everything is happening now.... Revelation playing out! 🙏🏻💙🇿🇦
They buried Christ’s body before nightfall because in Jewish timekeeping sundown is the next day, not sunrise, and that would have been the sabbath in which they were not to do any work since that was the Lord’s day. I don’t know where he’s getting “superstition” from.
Given the time at which they went to request the body, I don't think they could have buried the body prior to sunset. I think the crucifixion took place on Thursday, the body was buried after sunset of day, so we would be into Friday night, he was in the tomb all of Friday, all of Saturday, Sunday night and then he rose after sunrise, giving us three nights and three days in which he was in the tomb.
Yup. Studied the shroud myself a few months ago. I think the blood type: AB and the xray image are what really convinced me, among other things.

I thought the shroud was a fake because so many of the "Christian relics" are a joke. Then I looked into it, and now I'm 95% convinced.
Yes. We can never be 100% sure, but this definitely stirs one's faith.
Add the Sudarium to your 5% and now you are at 100%. Someone would have to fake both. And the flawed carbon dating dated the Sudarium at 750AD. The Sudarium has 120 blood stains that match the shroud. So how can this be? 100% now?
I think this was a great discussion! Definitely important to talk about because we never now what God might have preserved for us. I think it’s a good reminder that our faith is not blind. However, we should never direct our worship to any evidence. Our faith should also not depend on all of this evidence but only Gods word and the transformation that has happened in our lives. Evidence only builds on faith.
This was an excellent presentation. It should stir the heart and inspire the faith of every Christian. Our God provided the world physical evidence which stubbornly resists and refutes all skeptical inquiries. This is providential and utterly awe inspiring! Thank you, Lord Jesus!
Just like all the other Catholic relics, they keep the weak minded busy for centuries.
I doubt that Jesus would say “an adulterous generation seeks a sign” and then leave a sign.
He did leave a sign, but it wasn't on a piece of cloth. He told the religious elites that the only sign He'd give them was being dead for a full 72 hr period.
That comment is out of context of the recorded conversation. It doesn't matter to this topic of the shroud.
There is much more evidence of its authenticity than evidence against.
Nice strong evidences just in time for the hardest of times
The hardest of times ?? Like we needed this right now to cheer us up.... an old bit of rag ???? sheeesh!
I don't need the shroud for proof of Christ being we have Bibles so if you read the scriptures and look at history you have no need of the shroud because at this point it's mostly guess work
Commentors finding this as a thing to encouraging souls to be doing idol worship; would they accuse God of tempting ancient Israel for reverencing the items from Moses' and Aaron's artifacts of divine involvement? I saw the wrong in Roman Catholic idolotry via "relics"; but God DOES give us physical evidences when he so chooses. You should think first what youre doing ppl. To some of us, the Scriptures plus creation/life is plenty enough.
There's no implications in the video that it should be worshipped as a relic. It is presented as evidence for the resurrection. Very different from idol worship
Please learn what idol worship really means instead of spreading your irrational bias.
Do you think Christians commit idolatry with crosses? Like wearing them, hanging them up, praying looking at them, etc.?
@@honeybun3492 Wearing crucifixes, hanging them up, and praying while looking at them is idol worship. None of these customs are promoted in the Bible, and all of those customs come from the Tammuz cults like the crucifix itself did.

The face cloth is a "jaw band" ... important distinction.
I've commented to countless posts that his head cloth was 😢😢folded separately. 😢 I don't know how the shroud could be Jesus Christ 😮.
Those of us that are both intelligent and know the Bible as well as the Shroud know that the facecloth of Jesus was wrapped around his head after he died but was still on the cross. After Joeseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus brought the body of Jesus into the tomb it was removed, folded, and set aside. It was never put back on him again. Had he been wearing it his image would be on there and not the Shroud.
Thank you for looking into this.
I suppose the shroud survived all these years for the "doubting Thomas's"
The fact the shroud bears evidence and was folded by the Lord, and left is Hebrew and Jewish custom similar to folding a napkin. It meant that the person was going to return. In like manner, Jesus was making a statement.
See my comment for further evidence of what you are saying. People who claom the Shroud was used on the dead body of Jesus are totally ignorant and untaught of the original Greek manuscripts.
Jsus died on Passover day, which was THURSDAY NOT FRIDAY! Notice that in John 20 it says the dead body could not be on the cross after sundown, BECAUSE THE NEXT DAY WAS NOT A USUAL SABBATH, BUT A SPECIAL HIGH SABBATH OF THE FIRST DAY OF UNLEAVENED BREAD, AS PER LEVITICUS. which is the DAY BEFORE the Special Sabbath of first day of Unleavened bread. To the Jews, a part of a day or night counts as a whole day or night. Jesus voluntarily died physically around 3 M, the 9th hour, so thatis day 1 Thursday, day 2 Friday (1st day of Unleavened bread, special Sabbath, day 3 Saturday the ordinary Sabbath... He rose from the dead before sunrise of Sunday, 1st day of the week. 3 DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS, the Jews usually thought of a day as beginning at sundown to sundown, or nights and days. Sundown Thursday is one night, sundown Friday is night two, sundown Saturday is night three. We know this is the Truth case because of what Jesus Himself said, that he would be in the earth 3 days and three nights, and 1 Cor 15 confirms this.
Can you please give a verifiable reference for the alleged custom of the folded napkin?
The Bible, gospel of John, says Jesus dead body was wrapped as the Jews normally wraped a dead body, and this is also in same words how Lazarus was wrapped LIKE AN EGYPTIAN MIMMY. Note in John 20 that there are at least three words for "seeing" and the third is when John "saw and believed." This is omportant if you do not read and know the Greek, because WHAT DID JOHN SEE (horizo)? It was that the grave clothes were lying there UNDISTURBED as though the dead body was still in them, BUT YHE FACE CLOTH WAS SEPARATED FROM THEM WRAPPED BY ITSELF. That word wrapped is the same as in John 11 describing Lazarus coming out of the cave tomb "wrapped" and Jesus instructed the crowd to unwra him, HE HAD THE STRIPS OF GRAVE CLOTH WOUND AROUND HIM. This is the word used in John 20 about the face cloth "wrapped" by otself separately. NOW LOOK, WHAT JOHN SAW WAS THAT THE RESURRECTED BODY OF LORD JESUS HAD PASSED THROUGH THE UNDISTURBED GRAVE CLOTHS AND HAD SEPARATELY WRAPPED THE FACE CLOTH WOUND AROUND ITSELF, SO JOHN KNEW THE TRUE HUMAN JESUS WAS THE ONLY ONE TO DO THIS AND HE IS ALIVE AFTER BEING DEAD! The theory of the shroud of Turin is not a wrapping around, AS THE JEWS NORMALLY DID, but covering like you would lay between sheets or covers in bed. THE BIBLE IN THE ORIGINAL GREEK MAKES IT VERY CLEAR that the shroud of Turin could NOT have been used to bury Jesus. PERIOD. Examine what John 20 and 11 say about how the Jews buried their dead and why that is the definitive roof that thr true human, the Lord Jesus, IS NOW ALIVE NEVER TO PHYSICALLY DIE AGAIN!!!
I think the Scriptures preclude the Shroud of Turin being legit. John 11:44 shows Lazarus "bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face bound about with a napkin." This suggests something more like the body being wrapped by cloth, not just with a shroud folded over a naked body. John and Luke also testify about Jesus having a separate "napkin" or head cloth in John 20:7, mentioning the same "linen clothes," and "napkin," suggested they were buried the exact same way. Neither suggests a large shroud over a naked body, but wrappings over the body and a cloth over the head.
The fact that people are obsessing about this seems akin to flat earth, or Nephilim obsessions. People seem to get on board with anything but evangelism and eschatology, all while the world is transparently spiraling into the last days all around us. Seems like par for the course these days.
Is there any way possible that you can understand that?
49:00: As a delivery driver for Sherwin Williams, I can confirm that paint indeed does not have a blood type.
It's hard to get over how much the shroud looks like the 15th century painting of someone's son, that became the popular image of Jesus.
What about how Isaiah says they plucked out his beard? He still has a beard in this image.
Parts of the beard on the image have been ripped out, and appear covered by other parts of the beard. The details are recorded in study notes on the shroud.
My question is why would the one who said "Blessed is he who has not seen and has believed" provide physical proof in this instance only and no others in all of Biblical history?
JESUS SAID THAT TO DOUBTING THOMAS! Read John 20 for much more context. It's so good, you won't regret it.
@@jessicalightwarrior7276 I have read it many times. The whole book.
I would point out how until very recently hardly anyone had heard of, let alone seen this. Many people did get to see things and believed, while others don't. It doesn't discount seeing evidence and then believing, but is making a point. That those whose heart believes in Jesus without seeing the "proofs" are more blessed.
It would be a cruel thing to demand belief of everyone without a shred of proof. That would be impossible for many people, and how they're wired with common sense.

Jerimiah, I have been a Christian all my life, albeit my many times falling off the wayside, but I too was a believer as a very small child and all I needed to know was that Jesus is, and that's all!
Dear Thomas, we do no longer know Jesus in the flesh; Our faith is in Jesus Christ through His Word. It does not matter if physical evidence is left behind, since that has nothing to do with believing that His blood will cleanse you from all your sins.
According to Isaiah 52:14, Jesus was disfigured beyond any human likeness. The well-defined face on the shroud would not seem to fit this description. I would love to know Jeremiah's thoughts about this. Thank you both for this fascinating discussion.
Excellent point!!
There are so many other details about the shroud that they didn't have time to touch on that further prove it's authenticity. This topic is well-worth digging into further as it will serve to further strengthen our faith in our risen Savior!
It is troubling to think that people who profess to be Christians are clinging to the potential validity of a piece of cloth made by a human. This all seems contrary to a faith based belief in Salvation through Jesus.
Absolutely and I've always been. I've never trusted those who claimed it wasn't simply based on the facts that they wanted to prove it wasn't, instead of trying to prove one or the other
If I were to have the Shroud and it's guaranteed to be real, I'd only use it to remind me of what Jesus went through and that He rose from the dead by the Power of the Holy Spirit of God Who now dwells in my heart right now. The cloth, unto itself, is not to be revered, but the Person of God Who entered flesh to Sacrifice Himself to save us from ourselves. It's like a picture you have in your wallet of your loved ones. The picture itself is not loved, but the picture reminds you of who you love. I'm glad I was not the interviewer here because I cried like 6 times throughout hearing what Jesus went through for us. I could not hold it together. So even if this was a fraud shroud, it is still helping us remember what Jesus went through for us. Love in action, not just word. :')
This. Evidences left from God is wonderful, but by no means replaces the Gospel or is to be worshipped as it is a CLOTH. Many Christians are like threathened in unhealthy fear of this cloth like it's an attack on the gospel or something.. smh
Incense huh? Burning incense as an act of worship is a common historical occurrence. Faith is the evidence of things not seen.
NE GATIVE IMAGE Leonardo da Vinci messing around
Why I’m still a skeptic: Isaiah 52:14 says He would be disfigured to the point of not even looking human, Isaiah 50:6 states his beard would be ripped out, and John 20:7 is clear that there was a separate FACE cloth that COVERED his head (emphasized to dispute the argument that it was the strip of cloth used to keep the jaws closed) and that it was separate from the linens that wrapped around his body. Almost as if to preemptively negate the idea of this relic. There is also an absolutely shocking lack of blood on the shroud given everything that happened to Jesus.
There is a separate face cloth that has been scientifically proven to have been on the same body, known as the Sudarium of Oviedo. I’m surprised how rarely it’s mentioned. There are also areas on the face where parts of the beard have been ripped out, which is discussed & described in various study notes on the shroud.
Also it says that he was "marred more than any man". Doesn't say that he was not recognizeable.
I agree with you, I too am not convinced
How long was Jesus on the cross I think much of His precious blood remained on the ground beneath the cross, even where He was flogged too. 😢
My question is, whether it is real or not, why is this being brought back into the public's attention NOW after it was intentionally buried in the 1980s? It's been hidden in the Vatican's shelves for DECADES and now, when Paris seems to brag that they're announcing the coming the the Son of Perdition, suddenly we're taking about material evidence for Jesus Christ. Is this God's evidence answer to His reality, or Satan's deception foe a coming Imposter? Asking honestly as a believing Christian.
Can you put the links to the research he is presenting?
It's a nice additional piece of evidence, if it is actually Christ's burial shroud and can be proven so beyond a reasonable doubt. To Christians, that is.
To unbelievers, if it sparks curiosity and interest which can be followed up with a clear and sound proclamation of the gospel to that person, that's great.
But keep in mind that most of the people in Jesus' physical presence for 3+ years, who heard him speak and saw the miracles (so many more than recorded in scripture) still did not commit to him. Many actively disbelieved still. Given that, be tempered when considering the effective impact of the shroud (or the ark or the covenant, or Noah's ark, etc.)
John 20:3-7 says what wrapped Jesus’ body and his head were separate, does it not?
details......be damned.
Yes, the cloth that wrapped his head was placed on him when he was taken down from the cross for transportation to the tomb. This cloth exists, the blood stains on it match perfectly the stains on the Turin Shroud, it is from the time and area of Jesus, and many more details. Research the Sudario of Oviedo.

at the end of the gospel of john it says that jesus' body was wrapped with strips of cloth up to the neck, and there was a separate cloth to cover the face. no mention of a shroud. we know that if you wrap a shroud around the body of a person, the imprint would be uneven and make the body look fat. the shroud is a painting. just because we don't know exactly how it was produced, doesn't make it supernatural.
scientist have used the lastest tech on it and they say no paint or stain on the shroud period its not painted in its not burned in its impossible for modern science to explan thats why have have not been able to debunk it or they would
Exactly!
Interesting observations.
The gospels (including John) never mention “up to the neck” so that’s a straight out “you’ve read into it” thing. The way the shroud is described to have been placed does not contradict anything that the gospels say was there. You can simultaneously have a shroud, a headpiece and strips of cloth and the Bible does not make it clear at all in which order they were placed. Just because a shroud is not mentioned doesn’t mean it wasn’t there. That goes for thousands of other examples in the Bible and John is one guy who even wrote that.
Don't go stating the obvious like that; there aren't grants to pay scientists to state the obvious.
John 20:7 says that the wrapping that had been on Jesus' head was not with the linen cloths but was folded up separately. This single piece 'shroud' does not comply with the bible.
There’s the sudarium of oviedo that matches the wounds and blood from the shroud.
The video did mention that the Jews would often add an additional shroud/wrap around the jaw/face of the deceased to prevent their face from being in an open-mouth position.
So it is possible that the main shroud covered his body while a smaller shroud was placed to secure his face on top. But that's just my 2 cents anyway.
@@kittenwiskerz299 yep
You're confusing the Sudarium of Oviedo with the shroud.. this has been addressed a million times.. can't recall but it was either that the shroud covered his whole body, the head covering went over the shroud over his head or vice versa.
Of course it complies with the Bible.
As you said, there were two parts to the burial cloths. One for the head (sudarium) and the big main shroud which covered His body.
The shroud of Turin is just the body covering.
Your confused.
So, none who entered the tomb notices any coloration on the sroud? I'd think they would have mentioned the coloring even if they didnt see an image. Also, Jesus was covered with around 75 pounds of aloe and myrh. Are there remanants or markings of these elements.

As a Christian, the shroud is one of my pillars of faith. As a lay person, I have studied the research on the shroud off and on for decades, I personally am convinced. For once I don't care what Melissa's opinion is lol (sorry!). There are only 3 possibilities 1 it's a fake (laugh) 2 it's a real crucifixion image but not.of Jesus (super unlikely due to the many points of congruence with Gospel). 3 it's the real shroud of Jesus. It is tragic IMHO that the 1988 study cast doubt on the age of the shroud. However I kind of see God's hand here lol, and in a nod to what Melissa said, it casts enough doubt for those who don't want to investigate more. In my opinion the evidence for this being genuine is overwhelming. The arguments against are very weak. It's a miracle that it still exists, same with the tilma cloth of Guadalupe - the thing has survived a bombing and far over a hundred years of open air exposure and should have disintegrated centuries ago. PS thank you Melissa this is a great video, awesome guest that I will look into. PSS love your hairstyle in this vid!
Whew, I thought you were having Jeremiah Johnson on for a second. Whew. ;p
My question is why do why not have this relic mentioned in the Book of Acts, or the post-gospel scripture?
When the actual 3d image is made into a 2d image. It will not look like a picture. It will have distortion. The picture would have a much wider face. All in all, the shroud has no value to me. I know Jesus rose from the dead. I know he is the messiah.
It's a catholic thing, they love relics and items to show miracles and their faith, instead of just trusting in Jesus alone and accepting His grace. Ephesians 2:8-9.
No it is not
Said by no intelligent person ever.
I wish we knew with certainty. My doubts would melt away.
Did I hear him right? I think he said we need a evidence based faith? My hearing is really bad, I could be declared legally deaf in my left ear, so please clairify.
Don't be a Shrouding Thomas 👍😇🔎.
God 🙏 Bless ✝️💛.
Thanks for having me on the program Melissa!
What difference does it make?
A piece of old material with an image of a face molded onto it. So what? If it was Jesus? So what?
Does it make anyone love God more? That is the relevant question.
Jesus was a man who lived, that is widely accepted.
Why He allowed himself to die and rise again is the only relevant question.
Does that make any difference to your life?
It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s real or not. Jesus died for our sins through and through
Normal so serious in the comments but this definitely not Robert Redford....
