one of the most major time waster for me is the thought that "I've wasted a lot of time already", which causes anxiety and as a result you end up wasting the remaining time as well.

The thing is, when i get trapped in internet blackhole, i end up looking at random videos that kick dopamine to its top and i start living in a completely different world consumed by some frenzy. Then i start daydreaming. And when i decide to study again, it's already 12 past midnight. Then i become sad and depressed, knowing that i can't even give energy to things that are REAL.

@@tracesprite6078 going pretty well actually. Its a very practical, easy to follow arrangement. Smartphones and being hyperconnected is a massive slippery slope. We need to see the internet and social media as just tools. Use it when you need it. Don't 'browse' with no purpose. Its a time sink that you could have used on family or hobbies, that give much more fulfillment. Another tip, turn all cell notifications, except alarms, off. You can bulk catch up on Whatsap and SMS notifications when you decide. If it was important people would phone you. These micro interruptions wreaks havoc on focus and has a big time overhead per interaction.

You can say "i'll just stop doing that", but in order to reach that conclusion, you need to think, and if thinking can get you out of what *you* consider a bad habit (something you don't enjoy or agree with), then it's not a waste of time.

These were all habits I had to give up and I was not even average!
    1. I slowly cut down my video game time over about 4 years to none now besides the occasional mobile game. I have zero gaming systems now. I do hope to get back to a healthy point with gaming, but I realized for me it was a problem.
    2. My only real TV is UA-cam or with my family watching something together. We cut cable years ago. I did it back in 2011. UA-cam can be a black hole, but that is what the watch later playlist is for! If it isn't good enough to watch later, it probably does not need to be watched right now.
    3. 100% used to waste time on the internet reading news article or shopping for things I didn't need.
    4. I never wasted too much time on social media because I just didn't really get it. I use some now and and am happy using less because what I do use I enjoy. I don't feel forced into using it.
Doing all this has lead me to start my own website (and Twitter @centsoftime that I actually enjoy using!) focused on time and money. www.makingcentsoftime.com if you are interested. I don't want to take away from Better Than Yesterday though. This is a fantastic channel and I am so happy is growing at the rate it is!

Tip for game addicts! Play in a foreign language! I've been playing video games in French for years, it's taught me huge amounts, more vocabulary than any other resource that's for sure, using the addictive and engaging qualities of games to achieve a goal. It's also tiring so not only is game time productive (assuming you play a game that has a lot of dialogue like an RPG) but you also don't play quite as much as it makes you feel tierd. Give it a try!

  • @omegatauri1048

I don't think playing video games is a waste of time in general. It can give you much more than just temporary pleasure and productive activities don't have to give you something you can show other people as it is said in the video. I'm grateful for all the experiences I got through video games, all the people I got to know through video games and all the stories I did not only read or watch but I lived through video games.

I've focused to only watch UA-cam if it is informative like this channel.
I absolutely agree. My kids especially get sucked in for video games, kids you tube and Instagram. Once I take it away they are so more engaged in the world around them.

I love playing video games, but I tell myself I'm not allowed to play them until I've done something productive, but then I just spend all my time surfing UA-cam and reading Discord messages that I don't get anything done and I hardly ever play video games. It's kind of weird how I can easily prevent myself from doing something I greatly enjoy yet I can't stop myself from doing something that only brings me mild happiness.

A lot of these say things like tv and video games result in low life satisfaction, but I think it's crucial to understand that for many it's backwards; because we have low life satisfaction we go to things that will bring us quick happiness, even if short term. It's a dangerous game for sure but it's better than depression

  • @robertpiwowarek5354

I think these activities you listed are the reason many people won't jump off a bridge. In my experience many people age 24 and below are to some degree depressed and sad and in video games they find some kind of enjoyment or purpose. Its normal among my friends to both work and attend university - which leaves them with little time to do anything per day. that time is "wasted" of these things you listed. Of course I understand there are people with problems and that just get addicted - but I just feel like its a much more complicated matter.

To be fair, some people are able to turn a passion for gaming into a profitable career - live streamers, pro gamers, broadcasters, and let's players for example. Gaming can also have positive educational benefits as well; for mathematics, social skills, reading, coordination, and more, especially for young people. It's not entirely a waste of time but I agree with your general point that moderation is a good thing.

What I do is I allocate myself time per activity. For example I did two hours of study and now I want to relax playing games. I put an alarm of 1h and play for that time. As soon as it rings I found the nearest safe and finish. Back to studying or exercise. Same for watching Netflix I allow myself one episode. If it’s a show that I know I need more. I take one night a week to watch it.

Glad I got to the end of the video, otherway I was feeling like he'd be saying, that all those activites should be avoided completly, but he mentioned it at the end: Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time, as long as it won't grow into obsession and addiction. Everyone has to enjoy themself from time to time, otherwise they might come to a burnout and struggle to keep their motivation. If any of those activities help you enjoy yourself, they should have place in your life. And none of those are completely useless. Apart from the fact that they can help release some tension of stress, some videogames may help you promote some of your abilities like reflexes and strategic thinking and various kinds of media may help you look outside of the box of your life and get some inspiration and knowledge and other things. The key is to know that these activites have their place and purpose, so you use them in moderation and won't let them run your life.

Just as a thought (since comments are encouraged), a big time-waster that I've found is trying to find out what we need to do or accomplish with our time. In this state of mind, we aren't completely focused, though we feel 'busy'. We feel 'busy' but accomplish little of what we set out to do. It's extremely important that when we take our focus from these bad habits (when we end them), that we refocus on something with greater strength or attraction. This will also lessen the risk of falling back into that habit. We must redirect our focus purposefully and put our energy and thought into our actions.

Disagree on video games. Among my friends who are the most successful and productive are gamers also. Playing games can help you to stay focus. Specially multiplayer online games force you to stay tuned and push your decision making skill. I find this extremely helpful. Also a lot of people take playing games as a profession nowadays. Not to mention, the industry has been pushing our technology beyond its limit. heavy games require better CPU, better GPU and company made them for gamers and then AI industry takes advantage of that.

    1) You are NOT wrong, however, some people chose Video Games as a hobby, some others have taken a professional approach (E-Sports), and unfortunately some others CANNOT grasp their reality after playing 5+ hours. It all depends HOW you chose to act about it, because remember, NOT EVERYONE follows the same criteria.

My problems involve compulsively hovering around social media and UA-cam, or sitting around pretty much doing nothing. Regarding TV shows and video games, these are among the things I want to do but constantly neglect because of the former. So I'm in this position where gradually watching through a show, or making progress in a game I'm playing, actually kinda feels like a small achievement to me. :P Though that being said, there have been times where a game has consumed a ridiculous amount of my time, like last year when WoW Classic came out, it was practically my whole life for the first 1-2 months of release. >.>

Slowly making the changes. I quit social media (except the 'Tube), & I set an hour timer for games. I practice my instruments in front of the TV.
I'd agree with what someone else said; people. Some of them will take all your time venting their sh**t at you. Just pretend to be busy, because you would be if you weren't talking to them!

I play a lot of video games with my best friends and girlfriend. I watch some shows and movies with my girlfriend. My main goal is to be happy in life and those activities make me very happy. Therefore I’m accomplishing my main goal by procrastinating haha

    I agree with your list
The key is to prioritize the productive habits that help your life
    Talking about the habits
In the book Atomic Habits by James Clear, he says there are four phases for a habit to form
    Sign
    Longing
    Response
    Reward 😉

I played video games as a kid, now I am a computer programmer and make more money then anyone around me.... I also have 4 rentals, among other things. If I had more money when I was younger, I would have more rentals right now. You need money to do things, I am wasting time until I have enough money to buy another rental, but I still wouldn't consider it a waste of time.

Some TV programs are really good. Yet again, we have to be really picky.
I spend much of *wanting* a console for video games. I read books instead. :-)

The video game part - not applicable to all video gamers, but minor percentage of it actually make a career out of it. As in, work hard & join competitions where the prize monies are in millions [i.e.: DOTA. Total prize pool money = ~$25.5million (2018 championships)]. If that video gamer knows what she/he is aspiring to, have the technical skills & co-operation social skills to work with other teammates & have that ambition to win = nothing to stop him/her from "wasting time" on this for a pricey goal only the pro-gamer community would understand.

television is not related to time waste but it has 3% of time waste.
They are trying to stop social media too much due to irritation. ie: twitter and facebook.
We should not surf on internet and we should use computer productively.
Playing video games for 1 day can spoil brain.
They try to stop watching youtube videos. THANK YOU!!!!!

Each one listed has some benefit.
Sort of like "wax on, wax off".
Where the benefits isn't obvious, but each being a waste of time is.
Like the silly notion that video games help develop problem solving, for example.
Of course non of this apply to people who only avoid responsibility (read: escapism).
Definitely a waste of time for them, everything listed in the video.

    Well here is my story
I used to spend many hours on Facebook (much more then 2) then i found a time counter (limiter) in the Facebook app to be reminded. I've set for 30 minutes per Day. Gues what time my "alarm" it would go off? 0:30 EVERY EVERY EVERY SINGLE DAY! Imagine this! This is a huge time killer!
Long story short - i have deleted Facebook. 0 minutes piter day. HUGE amount of time to practice saxaphone and guitar.
    Now i have a different problem UA-cam!
Do you think i can get rid of it?

What if you read a book that is like a television series. Like the 6 books for the game of thrones? Or the Harry Potter series? What about sun bathing? People do that all day? Also what if you played games with friends and family? Does that make it anti-social? The list is what YOU think is not productive. I say reading books is a waste of time when a movie or show is faster.

I've never opened up Wikipedia And gone let me check my email or anything else I have always ended up several hours later learning about like the French revolution or something I completely had zero knowledge even existed to begin with. Lol beyond that is that really what people do with their lives I don't watch TV already and stop that years ago I don't do social media to the extent of anything everyday like that but I do some in front of the computer screen quite a long time but it's for designing CAD models for my line of work although it's usually feels like I've still managed to waste my day when I don't have a finished product. I can't tell if I'm just asking too much of myself.

The only time I wasted was following this list. I make video games and get inspiration from playing them. I spend time with my kids watching tv and educational programs. The internet is all about how you use it so is social media. This video is highly steeped in the opinion of the maker of the video.

Amazing video! But I can't stop watching it even it said to stop doing it.😂
However some waste of time is necessary for us indirectly. For example, if you and your boss watched same series on Netflix, both of you have a better relations by discussing about it. Like that!
    However, that's great!😉
