The road is actually closed at the peak to go south, but they don't have a gate there so they have to close it at four corners instead of where the road is actually closed. But as Ben Parker said, "with great power comes great responsibility." :)
Yep, just one. At the peak there are two gates that used to block access to the top of the mountain itself. It's a standard thing for communications sites, but I guess many moons ago they were deemed illegal. So they've kept them up there just always unlocked and always open (may be rusted open now). BUT, they've never had a gate on Main Divide itself to block travel on Main Divide. They have a sign up that says road closed, and it looks like everyone has obeyed that since there are weeds in the road behind the sign.
Unfortunately you wouldn’t get too far. The gates are more than likely closed until things dry up for a few days. However, I will say if you go outside of Barstow, off the 40, exit Daggett road, turn right then left and follow that road into the hills there is more than enough snow. I was out there yesterday to try to reach one of our sites and had to turn back because of how much snow we encountered.
How come the guy in the suburban in front of the gate would not open it for you? Was he a rival Broadcast Engineer? A LA hot shot with no respect! Jk it look like he was just rude.

Ha! Some people believe they are the guardians of the mountain. Even though I had a key... and have every right to be up there. Oh well.
