- The first of the two economic powerhouses of the Known World, Minrothad represents the naval power of the trading world. Comprised of all sorts of races, each united to make their guilds as much money as possible. They are a humorless people, obsessed with profit and market share more than fame or glory.
This is one of my favourite videos on Mystara. Great content. Thank you for your work.
0:20 Guess I missed the supplement where the Ferengi moved in to Mystara
Nothing unites humans and demi-humans quite like _profit_
The Ever Given pic was a great insertion.
Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it.
Just bought into this intriguing setting. Ordered the print on demand books from DriveThruRPG. I have the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, Thyatis and Alphatia, and the Glantri books coming in the mail.
Get ready to experience the joy of discovery, friend!
@Nordic Maelstrom Good for you! This has been my setting of choice for the vast majority of my DMing career. My players enjoy it, and the amount of published material is a huge help. Enjoy Mystara!
@@Scaramanga7 Always ready for discovery!
@@johnbalk6091 I started playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2E back in 1999 and had heard of the setting and even had it when I found the rules cyclopedia in a flea market. Never ran the setting so now I get the chance to dive into it in full glorious detail!
@@nordicmaelstrom4714 That's awesome! We use 2nd edition rules with Mystara, not BECMI rules. It's just easier. I recommend you pick up The Elves of Alfheim, and The Shadow Elves next. Both of those are awesome!

"Their book is mostly crunch". After your description of their culture, I suspect they'd prefer anything written about them to be concise and to the point with as little fluff as necessary. From your statement about the manual covering them, it seems the developers may have had that in mind.
How many bars of gold pressed latinum did the Merchant Princes charge you to let you make this video?
Remake hit on all cylinders; great details on all counts.
Looking forward to some serious orcs next.
One of the things I've struggled with when running Mystara campaigns is differentiating Minrothad from Darokin in a meaningful way. They tend to come across as "Darokin with more boats and pointy ears and less paper money".
What are some difference I should emphasize in dealing with Darokin merchants over Minrothad merchants?
Darokin is all about helping though with a price. They will gladly loan money or fund civic projects. For a favor.
Minrothad cares about money. If you don't have the gold then somebody else does.
@@Mr_Welch so, what you’re saying is that Darokin has the better PR department? 😂
@@MichaelHaneline and a financing department as well
I frankly like all threats to be competent and deadly thank you very much, none of this silly wacky crap.
4:49 what's this photo?! Is it from a comedy?!
Love the Minroathd guilds. Such a good setting.

Yay economics.
@ Mr. Welch 2:02 I like the Masonic ring. Nice touch. Except we aren’t about exclusion, contrary to popular belief, we’ll welcome anyone...as long we find them worthy.
No but you do have a secret handshake which is the image I needed
@@Mr_Welch Yeah, that’s true. Very nice video, sir. The audio was great. Nice and smooth delivery! This is another Gazetteer I need to revisit.

Not sure about this one. An isolationist nation with a trade-based economy? And it's not as if their attitude is a well-kept secret, every other nation knows Minrothad thinks they're all inferior non-people. Why would any other nation in Mystara willingly trade with someone like that when they could just trade with Darokin? Wouldn't Glantri be taking exception to Minrothad's proficiency in magic? How does any nation acquire that kind of wealth with such rudimentary economic policies? And how does a caste system blend in with a merit-based system anyway? IMO Minrothad only exists to be the "evil" capitalists to Darokin's "good" ones.
I have to agree to an extent.
Making an "evil hyper-capitalist" society that not only functions but is respected (or at least tolerated) by outside powers isn't hard.
I simply drew/draw from historical examples like the Hansatic League, Italian merchant republics and Rothbard's unsavory ideas (which was most of them) to create my nasty merchant republics.
To me it seems like the authors of this book had a hard time conceiving what an "evil hyper-capitalist" society would look like. Which isn't surprising. They were writing in the 80s after all, gotta be super pro Uncle Sam after all! Can't say a bad thing about capitalism.
Just look at what they did with Hule. Making it a wacky Iran parody. Persia has such a rich history, they could have drawn from Cyrus the Great for example. But no, they gave us a bargain bin ayatollah.
