This book was the main inspiration for me to write my own alt. history book. Granted my book is very different, but this book introduced me to the sub-genre and I wanted to write something set in my hometown with a re-drawn political map. My book is not yet available, but I plan to publish it as an ebook.
I don't really rate alt history unless it's very well done, which this is as I recall. I enjoyed the Beatles reference too (I think in the text it uses a less than savoury words to describe their music).
I've never heard of this book. I'm going to have to look and see if my library has it, it sounds right up my alley!

better or worse than SS:GB?
I think I've only seen the film of that, can't remember reading the book... unless it was during teenage years
It was written after SS:GB and also after Gorky Park. I suspect Harris had read them both.
