I don't think I would have painted the blade. I can't say how food safe that stuff is. Better off to try to clean it with a wire wheel, black it, or if you are fancy, plate it.
that thing you did with the planer... super dangerous. Kids, don't try that at home. If that thing kicked out, he would have no finger tips. You are better off using a small hand plane.
