In the Philippines, where I'm from, there is fear that what had happened in Ethiopia might fully erupt. With an anti-terrorism bill at our President's desk, there is a higher chance that journalists and truth seekers can be wrongfully accused as terrorists and arrested for criticizing the government. The problem is not only in corporate media, like Rappler and ABS-CBN but also in smaller independent outlets. They face libel charges, discrimination from the President himself, and even false claims of overthrowing the government. What's worse, some of the 80 journalists killed you mentioned in this video are Filipino Abel's story is a cautionary tale and a reminder that authoritarians will do anything to keep themselves in power. @JR In Trump's case, it essentially means the same thing either way. "Enemy of the People" is just to get people to believe the media is the enemy of the state, too.
@JR Could you elaborate? If your point is that their journalistic standards have fallen to maintain revenue streams from viewers, then I think that could be perfectly defensible. However, if your opinion rests solely on "CNN is fake news", then I worry that perhaps Donald Trump's "enemy of the people" rhetoric is working horrifically well. Not only that, but CNN was mentioned no where in this thread. Trump did not specify "CNN" is the enemy of the people, he said (in a Tweet, might I add): "The press is doing everything within their power to fight the magnificence of the phrase, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! They can’t stand the fact that this Administration has done more than virtually any other Administration in its first 2yrs. They are truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!"

Abel Wabella is right, the State of Ethiopia is wrong, but that's nothing new. In a small way it's happening in Canada too, no one has been imprisoned and tortured, but in New Brunswick, the Irving family controls all the daily newspapers, has for years and no government has been able to stop them. Sure some former Irving employees have tried to start independent newspapers, but with the Irvings controlling the province, they soon died from lack of advertisers, so only the CBC is the voice of the province since the Irvings also own stock in the CTV network through their stocks in Bell Media and their stocks in the Global TV network too. It's all common knowledge down here, and like a lot of people say, the only thing an Irving newspaper is good for is lining the bottom of the bird cage when you don't see your name in obits.
We are ALL flawed, imperfect. We all make mistakes along the way. But those politicians label enemies you should distrust them and take a critical eye to find what really is.
It's weird to see that even though a certain country mentioned at 8:36 isn't welcomed in Ethiopia, their treatments to people voicing for democracy turn out to be so similar.
No, they are not idiots and believing that is simply self deluding. They are psychopaths and, as the saying tells us: _There is method in their madness_
There's a fine line between journalists and activists. Journalists report on what has happened, activists make themselves part of the story, part of the push for change. Don't get the 2 confused.
@@RareEarthSeries You understand what Im saying. Im not saying that your friend was an activist, I dont know that. But I'm saying that activists should not expect the same freedoms as journalists. They are not the same thing. If you want to be an activist, go right ahead. Just be ready when the powers that be come and get you. Dont cry "Im a journalist" when you're out making the change you want. You dont get to have it both ways. As an aside, I enjoy your series very much. Thanks for what you do...
@@SCA440 They're both about free speech. It's easy for someone to look at anything a journalist writes or reports and call it activism if you disagree with it or want to cast doubt on what's being reported. To protect journalists requires protecting free speech in general, whether or not you agree with what's being said.
@@irkendragon I am a full proponent of free speech. But speech, free or not, has consequences. People looking to change the world shouldn't become journalists. They should become leaders and activists. Journalists should have the right to say what they will, but they cannot hide from the eventual consequence of their speech by crying "But Im a Journalist!!!" Journalists record and report what has happened. They by their very nature should not be part of the story. If they are, they are now activists in their own domain. Be one or the other. Cant be both.
@@SCA440 Very few journalists fit the bill you're describing. It is a misrepresentation of both terms and the reality of being human. You're speaking about reporters as if that's all journalism is. But that's not true. A journalist can say whatever is on their mind and still be a journalist. By definition, at that.
while i was watching this video i was having a difficult time understanding what was being said so i turned on the closed captions expecting the usual gibberish youtube captions are and i figured i would just try to get a sense of what was being said through that. but to my great surprise the captions were perfect! i thought it was really cool.
He talked at the end about the Washington Post journalist who was hacked to pieces by the Saudis. You can't get much more "Big Media Companies" that the WaPo.
@@verward The big media have press representatives in foreign countries. Why did they never covered his story? Could it, perchance, have something to do with the owners and where their sympathies lie, rather than their lack of testicles? Tbe overall story is about covering up the truth. Govts do that and so do the media in complicity.
@@billyandrew Perhaps the lack of coverage lies in the fact that there are hundreds of such incidents around the globe and the audience (Americans, in this context) would likely not take an interest in a single person being arrested in a far-off country? They would be more likely to do an aggregate story on how there are more journalists being suppressed than in years passed than to do hundreds of individual stories unless that individual is somehow related to something more close to home (i.e.Khashoggi and Trump's response to it). To put it simply, there are thousands of news stories that truly demand our attention daily, but only a handful of them we'll actually read about because there isn't enough time in the day to see everything.
That "this is rare earth" line at the end of every video is like the greatest mic drop. I'm so happy that dispite everything there are still people like Abel and UA-cam channels like Rare Earth.
It's weird, my whole life I've agreed with that sentiment, "don't trust leaders who say the press is the enemy", but as of the last year, my faith in the press has been completely shattered, especially as of recently when I know for a fact that the important statements made people who were interviewed by the press were true, but never reported on. It's a weird time, I don't trust the press any more than I trust politicians, but I do believe now that the press is the enemy to the people, and that the truth is whatever you make of it.
I'd argue that the press is not perfect, and therefore always open to criticism. But it, the very concept of journalism itself, being the enemy of the people, is the beginning of the end. It is probably not coincidence that your loss of faith in the press happened to coincide with one of the largest propaganda campaigns against press freedoms that the West has seen in my lifetime. But the solution to that is finding more sources of input, reading between the lines, and gaining firsthand experience to help guide your opinion.
Rare Earth I would agree but sadly the vast majority of people don’t take in multiple sources and look into the subtext. Hoping for a renaissance in investigative journalism with integrity, which is free of monetary influences.
@@RareEarthSeries I see, that's a very insightful comment and I think I do agree with what that. If I'm understanding correctly, it's not the concept of the press that I disagree with or think of as the enemy, just the ones that have emerged recently with half-truths. I suppose it would be hard to get any information if I completely distrusted all mediums, given that this channel is sort of an informative medium itself.
@@CommittingSudoku The press has always presented half truths. Your job is to find as many half truths as you can to create a full truth. Nothing is new under the sun, just peoples' perceptions of it, and therefore their demands from it. If you want good, independent media, search it out and pay for it. That's what donating to Abel is. It isn't theoretical, that's all it really boils down to.
I hold in deep respect whoever is willing to speak up against their own government because they care for their country even though they know they face persecution, exile and possibly torture. My family members faced the same for speaking against the communist regime in my country, and even though their contribution may have been completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, they still perservered in their effort to spread the message. Don't ever give up. Things will change for the better.
"He is the common man" Abel Wabella may believe that but all evidence is to the contrary; if his courage and tenacity were truly common among his fellow human beings then individual liberty would be the rule on this planet, not the exception. Abel Wabella is more heroic than any character we have seen on the movie screen this summer and clearly our need for such humans is almost unlimited. Hopefully his example will move others to refuse to bend to that which they believe is wrong.

You need to research more thoroughly.
_America_ as you imagine it, doesn't exist.
The Globalists legally *own* the place.
Look behind the *Smoke and Mirrors Show* at the truth you are being distracted from examining.
This is probably one of my favorite videos you've ever done. Awesome video on an important topic!
Don't give up on humanity, brotherhood and equality of mankind.
Yeah just turn the other cheek, let them beat you until your deaf or dead! but at the end be the bigger person and still believe in "mankind". The horribly unsustainable and disastrous mankind! We're not all bad. :D amirite guys?
Here in France, the country of "Liberté Égalité Fraternité" the police shot journalists and Human rights watch volonteers with Flash-ball, gased them, beat them up, took them into custody during the Yellow jacket demonstrations, the government's anti-terroriste unit interrogated journalists that had published on Macron's hit man that had dressed up as a policeman and had beaten up demonstrators... he is Benala, he is still free (1,5years ago). Freedom of demonstration and press is dead. I was personally tortured by the French police with bavaclavas on (hiding their faces) while my hands were tied behind my back... then taken into custody for more than 3 days... if you wear a yellow jacket, have a yellow balloon or a red lobster(to make people think about the rich dinners the French ministers ate with lobbyists, you are fined 135€ and taken into custody.
God bless you brother Abel! Spread the word and pray for your life! You are a better man than I have ever been.
What's worse, some of the 80 journalists killed you mentioned in this video are Filipino
Abel's story is a cautionary tale and a reminder that authoritarians will do anything to keep themselves in power. I express my solidarity from my country to his and to yours as well. This struggle for freedom is all interlinked. I hope that we can overcome it together.
Another video of yours that gave me goosebumps. You notice interesting things and direct videos perfectly.
This was one of the best episodes yall have produced, your ending monologue was great and more people need to hear this story. Thank you for all you and your team do.
Freedom, Liberty and Equality...
For those who can afford it.
No such things in what is known as _America_
It's a deliberately fostered illusion.
Being from the "civilised" West, I'd never heard of him.
I have now. Thank you.
Dear world leaders: Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are for all views, not just the ones you approve of.
I mean look what happens with whistleblowers like Snowden in the "civilised" West who should be treated like heroes for exposing abuses but are instead persecuted. It is all a facade, in the US especially.
The American pedophile pimp just got hushed in maximum security prison, so "civilized"

One of your best episodes. Not too much overly verbose monologue lol. Thanks for exposing me to this man
What an incredibly brave man. And how little we often value journalists and a free press.
Probably because we in the West imagine our press to be free, rather than the fact it is owned in it's entirety by five or six individuals.
@@billyandrew Yes, and even local papers are either dying off or being bought up. That's why we should value and demand that the press be free of influence.
You missed an opportunity. In the end credits he should've been Abel "Working Class Badass" Wabella.
Aye man, I'm proud of you. This is my most favorite episode. This is so beautiful. Really!! Full respect from Indonesia 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩

i found these videos randomly while watching junk. Most of them leave me in tears. These atrocities. I wish I wasnt useless. I wish there was something that could be done. I got up right now too and show my family these videos of things I never knew about so we could all about it. Its 5am. No one is awake. I am uninformed. More people need to be informed I think. These videos need millions of views.
Rare Earth is busting out the coolest stories with the best narration. Fucking love this channel.
So the ruling regime would call this guy "The enemy of the people,"?
Like trump call his opposition the enemy of the states. Regimes are all same every corner in this world.
Trump did not specify "CNN" is the enemy of the people, he said (in a Tweet, might I add):
"The press is doing everything within their power to fight the magnificence of the phrase, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! They can’t stand the fact that this Administration has done more than virtually any other Administration in its first 2yrs. They are truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!"
A Sinclair
Not familiar with the “Straw Man” fallacy, are you?
@JR
A play on words.
A ploy used by psychopaths to engender support for an indefensible stance.
As a Saudi from the province with the highest political prisoners per capita (Al Qassim), Jamal’s murder has created a trust vacuum between the government and the people that you can literally feel in people’s words. MBS’s charming halo was shut off in one sad day in Istanbul. It just tells how vulnerable dictators are, how fragile is the collective image about them in people’s imagination and really, there’s no one holding power, it’s just a massive illusion that we live in that can be changed with ideas.
Btw Evan, beautiful content my brother. Keep it up 🙌🏽
He looks a very kind and lovely man 😀
Rare Earth is the only channel I have notifications on for and you guys never disappoint
He's soft spoken and calmly talk about his torture.. and still he continues fighting.. salute
Keep doing this man... Even if it doesn't feel like it, you are making the world a better place, in a way that is most needed at this time... thank you
Abel is my hero too! He and his zone9 blogger friends inspired a whole generation about speaking up. They taught us we don’t have to be politicians or journalists to speak up about equality and democracy. We are citizens and we don’t stand on the side ! Citizens brought the regime to its knees and there are some changes ! We will always speak up and keep the government in check.
Considering one of the newspapers at the end is a recent-ish edition of the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung", does that mean we can expect a Swiss series soon?
What would you want to see covered about Switzerland?
Something about the Red Cross, the Verdingkinder, international Geneva, Bern's part in the moon landing?

It's exactly because of this type of jornalism that I wish you would come over to Brazil to take a look around. If you ever decide to pay a visit, let me know and I will help you out (keep in mind that I live in São Paulo, SP, and Brazil is a continental contry, as much as USA and Canada).

That was tough one for me. Cried a little at the end.
Very relatable to current events (especially the scene after the credits)

Why, Evan, did you leave the most important part to the post credits? Don't bury the lede!
Brave guy! Good luck to him and his cause
State media can't be the voice of the people.
Wow. What an amazing man with such strength of spirit
Am New yorker Am Ethiopia the promise land too I Fell proud አቤል ዋበላ (Abel Wabela) Who Suffer Our Suffering!
Hopefully this doesn’t get demonetized.
Those were some powerful words at the end.
This amazing man reminds me of the Charlie Chaplin speech from the dictator. I hope this is a start of a fair world for him and his people
We are ALL flawed, imperfect. We all make mistakes along the way. But those politicians label enemies you should distrust them and take a critical eye to find what really is.
Listening to this man does good to my soul.
What a champ. Hope he keeps on working for a better future.
journalism is the key - real journalism with full investigative power. the press often just a gossip, covering behind "opinion".
It's weird to see that even though a certain country mentioned at 8:36 isn't welcomed in Ethiopia, their treatments to people voicing for democracy turn out to be so similar.
Should've approached Nord vpn for a juicy royalty-filled sponsor.
Lol thank you for not... But if there ever was a video to promote online anonymity.
Authorities can very easily find that you are using VPN. It has a characteristic traffic.
"Our leaders are all idiots", couldn't agree more with you.
No, they are not idiots and believing that is simply self deluding.
They are psychopaths and, as the saying tells us:
_There is method in their madness_

Shed a tear for mr. Khashoggi. Poor bastard.
The internet has changed perception and the ability to manipulate it.
thank you evan.
He's a real soft spoken man. He's the kind of guy who shows iron will through his meek behavior
There's a fine line between journalists and activists. Journalists report on what has happened, activists make themselves part of the story, part of the push for change. Don't get the 2 confused.
They're both keeping a journal, and are both journalists. You're talking about a reporter.
Abel Wabella you are a person I wish everyone would be, including me.
I fucking love you, man
while i was watching this video i was having a difficult time understanding what was being said so i turned on the closed captions expecting the usual gibberish youtube captions are and i figured i would just try to get a sense of what was being said through that. but to my great surprise the captions were perfect! i thought it was really cool.
That's because you can provide a transcript to be used as captions. They did that for this video.
I'll take "Things Big Media companies won't ever report on cause they don't have the chutzpa" for 1000

The big media have press representatives in foreign countries.
WOW! What a man!
What a great guy-im humbled by him
It's weird, my whole life I've agreed with that sentiment, "don't trust leaders who say the press is the enemy", but as of the last year, my faith in the press has been completely shattered, especially as of recently when I know for a fact that the important statements made people who were interviewed by the press were true, but never reported on.
Committing Sudoku - Can you give the particulars on who made the statements and what they said?
@@CommittingSudoku The press has always presented half truths. Your job is to find as many half truths as you can to create a full truth. Nothing is new under the sun, just peoples' perceptions of it, and therefore their demands from it.
If you want good, independent media, search it out and pay for it. That's what donating to Abel is. It isn't theoretical, that's all it really boils down to.

God bless Abel hes a real OG fighter for human rights
Very interesting video Chris, I was wondering, will you guys make a video of Eritrea? The country that broke loose.
Keep up the great work!
It wasn't fire that strengthened his steel. He was work hardened.
Finally a guide for me!
