A 1963 R&B hit with a strong gospel flavour. There was a nice, if pretty straight, cover version by Pearlean Gray and the Passengers released a few years later.
Classic R&B stations should be embarrassed and ashamed for continuing to play the same 75-100 songs, when songs like this are out there just waiting to be relived in our memories. Thank you Theola.
So true! Grew up listening to mom n dads music, blues, RnB doo-whop, country w some jazz included. Music back in the day told a story, now a lot of the music just repeats itself. 🙏
I just lost my husband and this is the song I always use to play for him. It's nothing like the love of my man early in the morning and late at night I like to talk about the love of my man. I love you JK and thank you so much for loving me.
Dear Mary Kelly… my heart just broke reading your comment. Lord Jesus please keep you. I can’t even bear to think how you managed the loss of your beloved husband. I have tears in my eyes- just thinking about it. I send you prayers, and love. You were blessed beyond measure to have had a sweetheart of a husband to share your love and life with. Gid Bless and keep you. The love of your husband and your love for him will ALWAYS be with you.🙏🏼💕
I lost the love of my life a little over a year ago and this song just came to me I remember hearing it when I was a young women it's right on point he's gone for good this time I miss you my other half💞💙
This is the dynamic artist Ed Townsend produced for Septer Records! Ed wrote this song that belongs to Theola Kilgore, as no other female recording artist has made an effort to challenge her superb rendition! On her brief stay in New York, it was my job to keep her company, as she didn't care for big city life!
In the early 1960's I was a little boy in Suriname this small country on the northern coast of South America. Living in this shantytown neighborhood, on Saturdays a tent was erected and the people came dancing "with amplifier" on soul songs. I can remember this very vividly, the ladies drinking cola from the small bottles you normally could only find at the cinemas, wearing their wide skirts dancing mash potato and twist. Songs from that era I can recall are the Dells: Love is so simple and Oh what a night, Jerry Butler, For your Precious love and many others. I never forgot this song because it impressed me since than and now in my 50's, my kids also love it. I am getting them familiar with these songs and tell them stories of memories I have from than.
I was.sixteen years old when I first heard this song at a teen party. We would slow dance with girls respectfully and enjoyed ourselves. But the sad thing about hearing this song is all my buddies that shared those good times growing up we cant get together to tell the story because theyve all passed away. So when you hear your old favorite songs enjoy the feeling becasue its just not the same anymore.
This BEAUTIFUL Love ❤️ ballad is one of THE most Soul chilling rendition of expressing your love for your husband, your man, the Love of your life. Theola Kilgore’s voice gives me chills, brings tears to my eyes to think just how much I LOVE my husband of 30 years. I love him so much, because I also KNOW just how much he LOVES me. My zest for living would NOT exist if I did not have him. I would not want to continue on without my sweetheart. I ask the Lord to keep us and bring us home to him TOGETHER 🙏🏼💕❤️🙏🏼. I THANK God for sending me the one and only man who found me and married me 30 years ago.
Ed Townsends re-wrote the song. Theola was too shy to step foot in any direction without Ed's wishes. That's why people never heard of her. This song landed him a producing job with Septer Records, I should know, he brought me along as a song-writer co-producer. I wrote songs for The Shirelles in their version of The Mad,Mad, World Album by Mac Davis (the first and older M.D.) Yes, I've been around a long, long time. Thank God! Bless you all, Alvin Stewart ( The first Al Stewart )
I liked Shirley Allston Perry back then. I'm white, grew up in a mostly black project. My girlfriend, Vickie Burrell lived next door to me. The first time for both of us, at 14,15 years old was on her couch. I will never forget her beautiful almond eyes, her warm, soft dusky skin. My family moved away, I went to Viet Nam. She died of a heroin overdose while I was away. I know now, deep in my heart, the challenges that people of color face that I don't. I love her to this day.
I'm a Harlem nite and the whole neighborhood went to see her sing this song she was there with Billy Stewart it was on a Thursday night back in 1963 also Gene chanllar
The love of this song ! I can't get enough of it. I play it every night as my prayer. Love you Theola even though your gone you left us your very best ! ! !
I was 14 years old when I first heard this song. It still sounds great today. Reminds me of Etta James. Thanks so much for posting this. Much appreciated grown folks music!
Theola Kilgore released this in 1963. Etta released a version in 1968 (as I'm just finding out!). I'm more familiar with (and fonder of) Ms Kilgore's recording, but after a listen, Etta's is quite nice, too!
My husband depart this world 8yrs ago today listening to this song brings back a lot of joyous memories we shared together my love for him will always be extra special RIP my love I miss you dearly
I entered this world in 1960. I remember this song vividly and in fact it’s been on my mind heavy for the last few days. Maybe it’s related to a thanksgiving episode back then.
I was 15 years old when this song came out in 1963. I loved it then and still do. Now it has a different meaning for me even though I'm no longer married.
...ANOTHER PURE CLASSIC...LAWD HEP THESE YOUNGINS'.....THIS IS MUSIC...YEP I HAVE THIS ON A 45...SOMEONE MENTIONED ERNIES RECORD SHOP....I ORDERED MY 45s C.O.D FROM THERE...HAD TO SHIP OUT OF STATE...BUT IT WAS WELL WORTH IT...STILL HAVE ER' ONE OF THEM...
Songs like this were necessary when I was a 16 yr. old kid on the city streets. I was strung out on heroin and saw nothing good in front of me. I had already experienced my future. When Theola sang this song it gave me hope. She belted this song out, but the word that carried over this song was Love. You could hear the soul, the struggle, and the pain, but when Theola said the word love, then I knew sometime, someplace, somewhere, that this love would reveal itself and it finally did. T Y Theola
i have always loved this song. always wished i had a woman who loves me the way her voice expresses her love. well now i do...took most of my life, but i found her.
