She looks like any number of my relatives. Her character even shared my last name. I didn't have any reason for or means of processing it at the time, but looking back, it is interesting to think about how comforting her specific presence was to me. I look back on Maria with more fondness than I have for even the most classic bits featuring just Muppets.
Maria was for sure one of my favorite people on Sesame Street and I will forever miss her. Now that I'm 21, I appreciate all those little things she taught me in the show❤️
Guilty... She was very cute when she first came along, as she grew older, she became your big sister, your aunt, your mother, your nana.. Love Maria, hope to meet her someday at a convention and introduce her to my son..
That hour of comfort and order with Sesame Street and Maria, was the world to me. Sesame Street was my guiding light. Thank you Sesame Street , Maria and the entire cast.
I never realized until NOW how much ‘Maria’ & Sesame Street & the diversity of the cast may have been responsible for my love of all….I always thought it was just my soul, but good programming for a little girl didn’t hurt!! Xo
I LOVE the movie adaptation of Godspell and I recognize the character Manzano played in the original play, which was a fun part. I'm sure she had a ball in that roll!
I really love how she said Oscar was her favorite muppet because in an interview while playing Oscar Caroll Spinney said Maria was his best friend besides Slimy the worm. This really struck my heart because I feel like Caroll and Sonia had a bond between actors that was really sweet. "Maria liked when I called her skinny!"
I loved this show so much growing up. Started watching it in the early 1970s when I was 10 and my sister was 5. Maria was always my favorite cast member and Ernie and Bert were my favorite muppets.I watched this show up until the early 90s. Its so hard seeing a lot of those original cast members and puppeteers who have past on over the years. Most recently the actor who played Bob just a couple a weeks ago.
I didn't know what Spanish was, let alone Latino, before Sonia came to "Sesame Street". And of course, I learned how to speak a little Spanish from her by watching "Sesame Street".
Sonia, you are a real legend! I loved all your acting and you always make me smile, Sonia. I hope you have the best the future has to offer!!! :-) :-) :-)
Aww, what happened to Gabi (Desiree Casado)? I wonder why she’s no longer a character on the show after season 43? I know Maria retired in 2015 and Luis was let go (well more like retired) in 2016. I guess Gabi might’ve moved away.
Maybe Sesame Street helped me see that diversity is normal? I remember being very happy to meet people in real life who looked like Sonia and Luis and Gordon and Susan. My parents always made ugly comments about others, but Sesame Street taught me to see the good in everyone, thankfully breaking a pattern of racism i was so close to.
Absolutely loved how The Count (and the producers) persuaded her to shed her shoes and socks so he could count her toes. If I have a foot fetish, blame it on her. 🦶🦶🦶😍😍😍
Maria was most kids crush not.just in the Midwest but in many parts of Nigeria in the 80s when Sesame Street moulded and shaped the lives of millions on kids on basic educational tenets and living.
Damian WOW! You remember! Many of us watched Sesame Street back then just to see Maria's pretty face. But all in all, it was a learning program for us and I will definitely use the classic Sesame Street programs to teach my own kids.
I wish I was 20 years younger. Shed be my dam wife. She was fine in 71 maaaaan. My pop useda go crazy when she came on. Girls faaaaaaaaan... And little tooooo.
Wow I miss the morning show the way it was today it’s awful Me and my friends don’t even watch channel 2 in the morning. It’s so diversion ordinated and you do not feel love and family on the new channel 2 news
Just the sound of her voice reminds me of my childhood.

Sonia Manzano aka "Maria" = LEGEND!!!!!
SEFYH 2nd to J-lo on all-time female Puerto Ricans
Congratulations to you Maria, you will be missed by your fans and ty for everything you did 😊👍💗
Sonia Manzano and Rita Moreno were two of the greatest Latinas to grace my TV screen.Sesame Street and The Electric Company were my learning"tools".
What she says @3:15, that is so true. I remember feeling so safe and contented and relaxed as a child while watching Sesame Street.
Maria was for sure one of my favorite people on Sesame Street and I will forever miss her. Now that I'm 21, I appreciate all those little things she taught me in the show❤️
I'm 51 and I watched Maria when I was growing up!
I learned how to count from 1-10 in Spanish from her! Man I love this show!
Me too!
We all love Maria! Thank You from Generation X ♥️♥️♥️
Yes you are right 👍😊
I loved Maria (Sonia) and still do today. Great success in 44 years of her life on SS. Wish her luck ahead in her life in whatever she decide to be.
William Brown
But why she has leave the show? It won’t be Sesame Street without her.
Maria was my Sesame Street crush.
Same here!
Ditto

The crazy part, is that she's been on this one show longer than most people get to stay on SNL or Doctor who! So it's quite a miracle.
I LOVE the movie adaptation of Godspell and I recognize the character Manzano played in the original play, which was a fun part. I'm sure she had a ball in that roll!
Maria is the best. coming to think of it, she is indeed the 1st Latina i ever saw , true for a lot of people
Awww I loved her on that show!
Same beautiful crispy voice!
Love you Maria :)

A national treasure.

Luv you Maria! grew up watching you.. Love the Agua scenes! from Philippines...💕❤
I heard Sonia Manzano was also the voice actress of the Hispanic grandmother from the Nickelodeon TV show, The Loud House
Rosa Casagrande is her name, and she will be in the upcoming spinoff of The Loud House, ‘The Casagrandes’. Coming this fall to Nickelodeon.
@@Gshadow1000 I know that
No lie I had the biggest crush on Maria and Gina on Sesame street she is still a beautiful and talented lady to this day.
She was one of my favorite ladies with a light New York City/Northern accent. I’m gonna miss her.
I didn't know what Spanish was, let alone Latino, before Sonia came to "Sesame Street". And of course, I learned how to speak a little Spanish from her by watching "Sesame Street".
all cheerful moments...remind my childhood....old memories..
I love Maria from Sesame Street she's pretty
I had a big crush on her when I was a kid.
..thank you Sonia from New Zealand
Go Sonia! 🇵🇷🗽
Sonia, you are a real legend! I loved all your acting and you always make me smile, Sonia. I hope you have the best the future has to offer!!! :-) :-) :-)
What a legend
I always say I learned all my motor skills thru Sesame Street well before I began kindergarten 💓
Top 10 Puerto Rican of all time
WOW.... my first Latina crush.
Maria with Luis and Oscar the Grouch, of course !!!!
That show semi raised me
Same
I grew up with the first 4 years of my life on Sesame Street. No preschool or kindergarten.
I saw her once walking with her husband I believe outside the store named Talbots on 72nd St. in NYC. Always had a crush on her.
Though we will likely never meet, this woman will always feel like a second mother, to me.
No one’s gonna talk about her Godspell career
Gabi was my sesame street crush 💗💓💖

Had a huuge crush on Maria. She still looks good 😊
Absolutely loved how The Count (and the producers) persuaded her to shed her shoes and socks so he could count her toes. If I have a foot fetish, blame it on her. 🦶🦶🦶😍😍😍
Grover is my favorite!
The only reason I saw Sesame Street was because of Maria ( Sonia Manzano). I really had a serious crush on her.
I always thought she and Phylicia Rashad could be sisters.
Or Halle Berry.
I wish I was 20 years younger. Shed be my dam wife. She was fine in 71 maaaaan. My pop useda go crazy when she came on. Girls faaaaaaaaan... And little tooooo.
In 2014, I stayed in the very building where iconic Sonis Manzano grew up in.
Interesting.
This show was banned in several states because the actors were predominantly Black and Latino.
That was years ago. Surely the ban has been lifted by now?
@@ellenekanem That was the first two years (1969-1971) and was only in Alabama and Mississippi.
My baby ❤
I remember when she started having Gabi On Sesame Street
"Uhhh... I'm looking for the baby!" xD
Maaaan
Hola como esta ?
( ME )
Sonia forgot about Desi Arnaz!
Maria has good taste with Oscar and was surprised her husband is a Feagan
