I grew up learning strictly by year and asking good piano players few questions when I encountered them. If I could go back, I'd get a teacher and learn some fundamentals (scales, chords and very basic theory) and from there it will just be learning songs to the best of your ability. The painful process of learning songs on your own without youtube tutorials or any other source of help really opens your ears. If you are in a hurry to learn, using chord sheets will also help. But my advise will be to always learn a song with no help before you use other sources to clarify what you are not hearing clearly. Hope this helps.
