Why do you think there are no black theater critics (on the show). Are there none?

My question was not intended to suggest that all other ethnicities on earth are not worth mentioning. This is not about diversity. I hate that stupid word. It implies that professionals should be chosen for their color or race. This practice is virulent in America. The mostly White leadership mostly choses the least qualified Black person or the ethnicity to fill the diversity post. Then those chosen enjoy their exceptionalism and become horrific gatekeepers to prevent others of their community from getting opportunity. Shows like Theater Talk seem to rarely if ever attempt to incorporate a qualified Black critic into the mix. Not just to discuss Black themed theater, but as a human being with a point of view that has nothing to do with the skin color. I'm not saying this wonderful show is Fox News that viciously practices race bating and skin politics. Far from it. The professionals on Theater Talk are amazing and generous. However, I've been watching it for years now and its stunning that they almost never make the basic attempt to find a regular Black critic to sit in and discuss the mainstream arts. It's just preposterous and beneath them. We're taking decades not days. What other conclusion can a view come to other than they are deliberately vetting their profession. They know what they are doing. They're not stupid. They are completely aware that they have filtered out (with a very few exceptions) the Black faces from the show other than the occasional Black performer. Shame on you Theater Talk for not realizing you are overlooking diamonds in your search for gold. Don't chose someone because they are Black but because they are fantastic and happen to be Black (or another non-White person). Just stop this weird exclusion and join the human race. I say this with love and respect, not skin politics. You're really missing out on some wonderful talent.

madisonstage That's an interesting question. I almost feel like saying "Oh well, too late now." Theater critics -- great, established ones -- are losing their jobs every day. I don't see many new ones coming along of any race or gender. Open to opposing views here, as I wish this were not the case . . .

Times are changing. My query is only directed at Theater Talk not the industry. This show will continue for a long time. I kept my comments specific. That said, what excuse can they have after being on the air for so long. It would appear to anyone looking in from the outside that not bringing a talented, qualified, well versed, smart, Black female or male into their circle was deliberate. As smart and critical as they are it's unfathomable that they are oblivious to their exclusion. I refuse to believe this in light of their strong analysis of the industry around them. It's not racism clearly. It's face-ism. They do not wish to hire a Black critic in my view. I believe they may have serious false assumptions that the Black person would only be understand Black theater, or possibly only be literate and concerned about Black theater. I'm groping for any possible reason on earth.
